dunno how many of you are familiar with the comic series Fables from Vertigo/DC comics, but i was thinking about trying to make a game based off it. i've already got some stuff outlined in some really rough notes i'm planning on refining.

the cliff notes version of fables for those unfamiliar:
fairy tale characters (fables) were forced out of their home world by someone called the Advesary. they hide in communities among normal humans and have different laws, traditions, etc among their communities. they have to deal with things like hiding themselves from regular humans (mundanes / mundies), fueds/disputes/problems among the fables community, and then of course agents acting on behalf of the advesary and adversary themselves coming after them.

basic idea:
characters are pulled into fable town where they've been recruited to help fight against agents of the advesary and other mysterious forces so they can return home. there'd be an overarching plot moving towards different conflicts and obstacles, smaller side plots along the way that players can complete to help 'steer' the direction of the story. the ultimate goal being help the fables community return home and once they're back in their homelands and fables can fully use their power, get access to lost or stolen artifacts/items, etc, they would be able to return characters to their homeworlds.

npcs:
would be different fables in different roles. some of them might resemble those seen in the actual comic series while others would have different roles or personalities. they'd pop in and out for different things, contribute to different parts of the plot based on how characters handle different plots and events, and be responsible for running certain locations, businesses, and services.

different things characters will be able to do:
- some slice of life things that would include helping the different fables in day to day life by running errands, helping with different things as basic as feeding the non-human fables up at the farm, building up the community, or just dealing with the chaos that comes with living in a community filled with fables.

- training for characters who aren't combat trained to include basic hand to hand stuff, some more niche fighting styles, using different powerful weapons or spells, etc.

- plot related events that center on confronting or being confronted by different threats regardless of who they come from

- battle preparations for when things eventually come out

- some different 'missions' characters can undertake outside the fabled communities to get different items or intel, find or stop foes, find fables who are in trouble, infiltrating the homeland, etc.

- a mix of celebratory, recreation, or special events to celebrate things like the formation of different fabled communnities, birthday or annivesary events relating to fables, victory celebrations, etc.

- other stuff as well that isn't immediately jumping out at me to mention as i type this, haha

other notes:
- knowledge of the fables series would not be required! there will be terminology and elements taken from the series but it will all be outlined accordingly so players will have everything they need to know readily available and don't need to do any extra research or anything

- things are going to get dark. they'll get violent. characters are going to get hurt (physically/emotionally/mentally). they'll get hit with spells and potions and other magical abilities they're going to be vulnerable to regardless of their powers. there will be blood, death, and violence. there's going to be drama and conflict. there'll also be some light-hearted things to break up heavier plots. characters are expected to fight and/or contribute to the efforts of the community.

- some locations will be directly taken from the comics while some might be completely new or altered versions of what was seen in the series. there'd also be some inspriation taken from actual fairy tales and legends, series like once upon a time, shrek (yeah, i said shrek), and different fairy tale based media for characters, events, and locations as well

- there will be some events or plot elements that are closely related to the comics or taken directly from them, so players who are familiar with fables will absolutely see similarities. i'll do my best to try and add some twists to it so it isn't so overtly predictable what will happen.

- power nerfing would be a thing but only from a 'we can't have you destroying our communities' perspective as well as other reasons that'll relate to The Plot.

- there will be a network. i'm just trying to figuring out some aspects of it. there will be times where the network is inaccessible or locations where the network is interrupted because ~magic~ and ~reasons~.

- there would be a 'primary' community where they operate out of but characters will be able to travel to different parts of the world, other fairy tale locations, and the homelands for different missions and events. fables from other communities will also come to the primary location as part of missions and plots.

- characters from fables or different fairy tale themed/adjacent canons would be absolutely welcome. they will be treated as fables but they will not be treated as the fable the communities know. for example: rapunzel from the tangled movie would be acknowledged as being a fable named rapunzel, but the rapunzel of the fabled community would be the one the fables know as the 'true' rapunzel and her story would be the one they know and is recognized in that human world and the homelands. for fables characters, though, there'll be a dynamic in place to ensure they won't have any advantages or be able to predict different outcomes.

- there'll be a reward system in place where characters can complete tasks and use activity points to be able to purchase different things like magical weapons, spells of all sorts, their own gear and what not, and various other things.

- characters will be able to take up different jobs with fabled groups such as magic users being able to assist the witches, combat trained individuals can help mentor and train people in combat classes, farmers or gardeners can help tend to the farm and other things, cops can join the sherriff's office, etc.

- there will be some differences in how characters are treated specifically relating to characters who appear 'non-human'. these differences will only be pointed out/used in the sense of fables will express concern over their inability to blend in with the mundies. non-human characters will also have the option to purchase glamors but this comes with a cost that players opting to do this will be required to play out to use.

- characters will also be brought in under the amnesty, meaning they won't be held accountable for any crimes, deeds, or conflicts from before their arrival and the fables would expect characters to respect and abide by this. meaning: red hood trying to kill the joker because the joker was responsible for his death would be frowned upon and grounds for arrest under the terms of the amnesty. sorry red hood.

that's everything i got for now. is this something people would be interested in and if so, what questions do you have? what would be some things you'd like to see in it? any thoughts or feedback is appreciated!

as a former fables fan (before willingham decided to blow up his own series and then relaunch it anyway??) i think this is a fun idea

I like the idea!

The only thing I can think of in terms of feedback is slow, potentially NPC-heavy reward mechanics sounds a bit of a slog, with the build-up from errand running.
Could have an option to have characters not be new to the setting? It feels like an ideal setting to have a character be integrated from the jump, closer to an AU than a jamjar, e.g. Not ‘you have been zapped here, if you want to go home slop out pigfeed’ but ‘your character is already a refugee, how do they fit into the setting?’ Gives a lot more creative freedom, character motivation would feel more organic, and makes use of the existing world hopping mechanics included in the setting.

ayrt!

oh, yeah, i can definitely understand what you mean with the npc-heavy reward mechanics. rewards wouldn't be all related to npcs. there'd be plenty of other ways for characters to get different rewards besides 'rapunzel needs you to go find her a pair of magical scissors to cut her hair and she'll give you the magic beans jack sold her in return'. i should have clarified that!

i did consider having people already be established there. the only thing that made me hesitate is deciding how much creative freedom to allow players and how to best go about implementing that without hampering players and their creativity or being too lenient. such as, do i give players who are interested in apping characters a way to brainstorm ahead of time on what their character has been up to? what's a reasonable amount of freedom for them to have vs how much hand holding would need to be done to make sure players aren't wasting their time coming up with ideas that wouldn't fly and how much work would i as a mod have to do for characters who players want to already be established in the setting. there's also the case of, how do we explain where your character has been all this time without pigeon holing people into specific roles/missions?

to make the jamjar setting work, the initial idea i had was the usual, you were rescued because the adversary came for your world, and you gotta help the fables if you want to save your world. since that comes with some motivation of 'well shit, i actually like my home and wanna be able to go back/how dare this fucker come for the world that i'm in the process of trying to conquer'. plus other motivators that come for some people when their home/loved ones are in danger and wanting to help. and for the less inclined to be useful, if they want to live in a world that isn't eventually going to get ruined, you gotta do something. plus given the magic of fairy tales, there's plenty of options to offer in a 'we stop the adversary and you can have this castle full of riches or grant you one wish of your choosing. which now that i say it here, this is probably the better route for jamjar.

Oh, don't worry about the clarification thing, you can't find everything in one RPanons post! Just glad you're open to feedback, keep being cool.

on the AU side, I see your points there. I've been in a few games with similar set-ups and it worked out fine by doing something like a TDM which involved AU workshopping with people working out existing CR and connections. So most of the work comes from the playerbase. I think as long as there are some basic guidelines, people tend to get it, and FAQs can cover the niche cases. The 'where were they' question is one of those things that just need a handwave, honestly- any excuse will do. On another mission, or have a secondary location somewhere that's the generic place dropped or non-apped characters go when they aren't needed. All this to say, it's been done, and it works! But if it's not your deal, I can see why.

I agree that feels a better jamjar route. It even opens up the chance for fun adventures from player canons, when the game gets to the point of world hopping war stuff.

Hello! It's the anon from this https://rpanons.dreamwidth.org/97412.html?thread=280921476#cmt280921476 thread keeping you posted.

I've decided to ditch the idea of the Thedas setting given a variety of factors including that Veilguard basically nuked southern Thedas and the likely competition between players of the protagonists that theirs is the 'real' one. In retrospect, that sounds like an OOC nightmare waiting to happen.

I have ideas for the setting, likely a Midwestern Gothic with heavy influences from canons like Twin Peaks in terms of atmosphere and a general uneasy vibe. I know cities have been done nearly to death, but it seems like the likeliest setting to get PCs to interact on a regular basis. Also, I haven't seen the Midwest used as a setting before and I know the city I'd base it on like the back of my hand, so I should be able to pull elements from that atmosphere without trouble.

I've also decided against memloss as it seems too polarizing and for a situation where characters agree to come. That should nip the usual tired old 'where am I, why am I here, and how do I go home' posts in the bud.

However, what characters are told about what they're agreeing to and what's actually happening would not necessarily be the same thing. That would start to come out during events and hopefully provide further incentive for characters to interact and compare notes about what they're experiencing.

AC would be monthly check-ins for people with five or fewer characters, but if someone wants more, I'm thinking that they ought to also provide a link to a substantial thread to try and avoid squatting or players taking on more than they can realistically handle.

The first three months would be open to everyone to app, but then turn invite only. Three months should be enough to acquire a steady core of players and characters.

As for the question of sex, there would be the occasional aspect during events to facilitate sexual interactions. However, such interactions would be limited to characters eighteen on up. Characters under eighteen could kiss, cuddle, and hold hands, but absolutely no underage beyond that on comms.

I'd like to recruit at least three mods to help me run the game, one as a plot helper, one as the list/coding mod, and one app mod, preferably one familiar with Eastern canons as my general frame of reference is Western canons.

I know I still have a long way to go before anything is even close to a TDM, but I'd like to hear your input as it takes a village to produce a game with staying power.

anon, either do it or don't. stop asking the community to make this game for you.

I’m not, and that’s not how I intended for it to appear. I’m trying to get a general idea of who might be interested in what. I know that I have a long way to go to be ready.
