i think the wicked movie is also a relevant example. plenty of adults are currently freaking out about that but that movie is definitely best enjoyed by 12 year olds.

ah yes because movies never change the source material, right, that's never happened before

Wicked got a change of tone for the movie and the marketing has been heavily directed toward a "for the whole family!" mood. they released DOLLS which i can't believe you missed because the news of parents angry at the wrong website listed on the box even reached my little country

there's also been a bit of a mess with the book, because they're reprinting with the movie cover and the parents are getting them for their kids when the books are nc17

Lol what? If anything the movie expanded on some of the darker stuff.

Anyway, family movie isn't the same as a kid's movie. They're aimed at adults as much as children.

You must be too young to remember how a fair amount of 80's and 90's R-rated films had toy lines and even cartoon spinoffs. There were Robocop and Aliens action figures ( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WeOnNlSlcqI ), and a Toxic Avenger cartoon ( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mf2_g52p__Y ), to name a few.
