yes to cross-canon, no to cross-medium, yes to canonblindness

when it comes to mixing mediums, i get taken out of the thread when characters look too visually different. i know this is purely a me thing since most everyone else seems to have no problem with it, but tagging LA people with anime characters just looks like this in my head, and i completely lose the immersion because it's too ridiculous

i've heard it's due to a lack of imagination, or the inability to visualize. i'm not sure why i can't do it, but i just work not to put myself in those scenarios when i can avoid it. crosscanon is cool since i like seeing other chracters from other stories, but i just generally need them to be visually similar. if someone from a starkly different visual medium tags in to my TL, i'll keep the thread going for a bit but i'll usually end up dropping since i can't enjoy it

i've found some ways around this. if i play someone like harely quinn, i'll include both live-action icons and animated icons to her journal so i can use LA with LA players, and animated with animated players

but even then, within the same medium i can get tripped up. tagging a character that looks realistic like from far cry, or last of us against a character that looks like parappa the rapper is still too different. yeah, they're both video games, but one looks real and one looks like doodles

i've seen ppl say you can just ignore the icons and play the character solely as a character, but i enjoy the visuals and iconning and knowing what characters look like, so i think just pretending that i can't just google a character for a reference would also feel silly to me

and when it comes to being canonblind, i normally do at least a google search on a character to know what to expect. not a deep dive on lore or anything, just surface level, maybe some clips on youtube

the image you linked is hysterical, though. Even if you can't imagine it as anything less than ridiculous, do you think you could ever have fun just letting things be silly? Like, do you prefer not to write comedy at all? I ask because I wonder if the openness to writing comedy plays into people's desire to play crossmedium specifically.

i am the same as ayrt, i can't do cross medium when the styles are drastically different because i love visualizing my rps and i just can't do it when it's that silly lookin'. i don't really do comedy unless it's with friends or pre-existing cr

da, but comedy isn't synonymous with wacky goofy silliness, anon. there are tons of other ways people enjoy writing comedy that don't involve that particular brand of it; it doesn't mean they aren't open to humor at all.

that's... not really what I meant, though? I guess I'm asking what it is about "goofy wacky silliness" that it removes them from what I personally consider the fun aspect of playing cross medium

you personally consider it the fun aspect, but not everyone enjoys it or even finds it funny, and it doesn't mean they "don't prefer to write comedy at all." it means their tastes in comedy are different from yours.

pretty much this. you can like comedy, but you're not going to like every old adam sandler movie or spoof like airplane. comedy is a wide spectrum, and some people like pies in the face. others think the prank videos on youtube are the peak of hilarity. (i beg to differ and find pranks fucking despicable and get pretty angry from them). same with fighting, horror, romance, etc. liking romance and bodice ripping books doesn't mean you'll like super smutty books. same as not wanting reverse harem pick a flavor of boy for the night out of the 32 flavors you have. it's great for people who love it and i'm not going to yuck their yum, but so many people take 'i don't like this thing you like' personally. it's not.

I didn't take it personally, though. I'm sorry if my phrasing suggested otherwise, but i want to know what about what i see as a comedic moment comes across as undesirable to them, because I don't know how they feel and want to understand why they feel differently about it than i do.

yes but considering i don't know WHAT they like, I was asking them what they DO like. It was not a judgement. I am not stating what they do or don't like, because I don't know. I was curious what part of it makes it feel more cringe than comedy to them. Does it make more sense if I phrase it that way?

yyy, it does make a lot more sense that way and I understand now, and I saw that original anon gave a really good response that also explains well how I feel about it (but I wouldn't have wanted to speak for them.)

I think I just read it as a judgment because what you said about "openness to writing comedy" made me feel like you were saying that people who weren't into that type of comedy were inherently not open to writing any comedy, but I get now that it wasn't meant that way.

Hey, hey! I do love the rule of funny, so I can see how leaning into the comedy of it can be enjoyable. I’ve tagged characters on throwaway memes like hot or not for the comedy of my character reacting to seeing a pink pony, or a giant robot, and being expected to judge them. Things like that can be fun and silly.

But, to me, the novelty wears off fast. Those are more like gag-tags and palate cleansers between what I would consider my big threads, my PSLs, my game logs, etc.

Plus since I’m RPer who mostly looks for shipping/smut when I’m writing, I know that I personally wouldn’t be able to get that with cross-medium. I couldn’t write a steamy PSL between Pam Beasley and Sasuke.

that's exactly what I wanted to know! Thanks for giving me context anon. I can absolutely see what you're getting at, even if those things might not stop me personally.

I've had some luck where the novelty doesn't wear off cross medium, but in the last year I picked up a character who was way different (physically) than most other characters in RP. I enjoyed it a lot and wanted to give that character some deeper RP, but wasn't sure why it felt like it wasn't a sustainable character long-term. Your response also helps gives me a bit of perspective that the character I was playing perhaps might have been too novelty in that way— because yeah, a lot of it did come down to characters having to really adjust to what my character was before they could establish deeper CR.
