something big going down in clown town

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

If it is alright to ask, how do you stay mentally and emotionally well, nonnie? Do you have therapists as well to help you with the stuff you have to deal with?

So it helps that I’m not a 988 operator, but at an outpatient clinic specializing in prevention for people who are high risk. While I’ve definitely had to talk people off the metaphorical ledge, I’m mostly helping them avoid climbing back up there.

I probably should be back in therapy because being exposed to that level of human suffering does take its toll, but I have a supportive team and other good spaces to offload things. It’s somehow less depressing than my last community mental health job!

Since I know this job can be a downer, what's your biggest success story or one that made you the happiest?

Also thank you for all that you do. Calling the crisis hotline when I was 22 literally saved my life, I would have died that night if not for someone who sat on the phone with me for about forty-five minutes and talked me into going to the ER instead of crashing my car on the freeway. I still remember her soothing voice and how she told me how brave I was to make the first step in calling to get help. So I'm sure there's someone out there who remembers you the same way.

Anon, I’m really glad you’re still here. I am not 988, but a combo of several 988 calls, “if I get myself sectioned, my friend does all the group therapy at the hospital and it’s gonna be so uncomfortable”, and “if I don’t get my shit together I’m going to have to submit a bunch of paperwork to the licensing board” kept me from trying to delete myself a few years ago (the pandemic was bad). I’m glad they were able to help you out, they were awesome for me too.

I can’t tell positive moment stories in a way that provides full context, but I’ve definitely had people get better.

do you get any training? is everyone who works on these human, or are some AI? i've tried a few times with this but i always end up feeling worse, one encounter actually prompted me to make the attempt i was trying to avoid, it just felt like talking to someone who actively resented talking to me.

I’m so sorry calling made it worse, your situation is honestly my professional nightmare. I’m glad you’re still here :( Having been on both sides of the call, I will say that the goal for the US national line is to help you get to a place where you can make it through the next little bit until you can get in-person help, and I resented one call where the guy was redirecting me to safety planning because that wasn’t what I wanted out of the interaction. Warmlines are an alternative where it’s absolutely a real person on the other end of the line and are staffed by people who have made it out of the mental health crisis you’re in at the time, and depending on where you’re at mentally might be a better choice.

I don’t know about your area or industry trends, but I know the 988 in my area is staffed by mental health clinic employees who want some overtime because the federal government is giving out some very nice grants to get people who are actually competent on the line. My company already expects people to have basic crisis knowledge as part of recurring training, and during the application process, including a sample call, they screened people out who were going to be… not good. I got assigned to other crisis intervention work instead of this, but since I’m already doing outpatient prevention that’s probably a good thing…
