something big going down in clown town

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

Someone getting their degree in library science

So the ultimate goal is to become a librarian. I've worked in two libraries and I'm looking for a job at a new one currently!

What is the most interesting research topic you've helped someone with finding information on?

My personal favorite is the ones who asked for help in finding children's literature in foreign languages. At the last job I had, the library had a rather large collection in different languages like Japanese, Arabic, and Korean. We had one lady who was teaching herself English by examining books in her native language and comparing them with the ones in English, plus reading things like children's biographies in English, since those often have higher-level vocabulary in them.

Also helping kids find research on "historical events" was fun even though learning that 9/11 is now one made me realize the kids must think I'm older than dirt since I lived through something they read about in their textbooks now.

Need any help with your cataloging class?

(Asking because I'm a cataloging librarian and I basically had to teach some people basic cataloging because the class at our university was so poorly taught)

Actually I haven't taken the main one that teaches that yet! I only just learned in a course last semester how to cull the collections.

But I will take any tips you have cause I know the classes aren't the best no matter which university or college you're at now.

AYRT

So the main thing is that a lot of resources can get VERY in the weeds with regards to cataloging. Don't worry, you don't need to know the ins and outs of how RDA works, the vast majority of cataloging (especially at public libraries) is copy cataloging (taking a previously created record and applying it to your item in question). So if you get overwhelmed by numbers, just remember that you probably won't need this in the future.

If you're American, you'll probably be learning to read MARC. OCLC has a great resource where you can look up all the MARC codes and how to format them: https://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/0xx.html

The first thing you'll need to do is learn how to read a catalog entry. My class didn't actually teach us this and I was livid, lmao. If you remember field (the three letter code, what larger concept is this entry trying to tell) vs indicators (the two numbers, what are some oddities about the larger concept we need to know) vs subfield (the longer strings of text, how does the larger concept relate to the item in question), that'll make reading a catalog entry easier.

Feel free to message me at [personal profile] bocchithesock if you have any more specific questions! I love cataloging but know that it can be a little intimidating, lmao.

Since I've worked as a cataloging librarian as well I wanted to do a drive-by virtual hand shake to anon. Keep up the good work! It's really kind of you to offer help to someone learn. That's really in the librarian spirit nonnie.

What's your favorite class so far? What area do you want to focus on?

Probably the one I'm taking this semester in YA literature. I already love the genre and we're reading books and then doing assignments like assigning the characters in the "Hero's Journey" book a report card on their emotional responses or writing an IC piece on "artifacts found in a museum" for our Sci-Fi book.

I'd LOVE to be a children's librarian but, alas, that doesn't pay the bills so I'd be happy to end up working in a regular library with a focus in the children's section. Or work on a bookmobile, I did that at my last job and it was honestly one of the most fulfilling parts of what I did on a daily basis.
