something big going down in clown town

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

this person does not need to mod games ever. they do not have the temperament for managing players if this is what makes them ragequit

tbf and not excusing their other bullshit, they've lasted longer as a single mod (afaik no others, right?) than many teams for other games. a lot of mods seem to underestimate how exhaustive modding can be and burn out rapidly.

they might have lasted longer, but they lost a lot of players because of the way they moderate and treated people. come sail away used to get a lot of attraction and used to be a medium/large sized game. i would prefer being in a game that's short-lived with nice mods, then be in a long surviving game where a mod gets temper tantrums if you question the slightest thing or get bullied because your character isn't within the "popular group".

the mod has been burned out for months and most people thought this game died back when they got banned from EMP and other places for their behavior. the game should've wrapped up gracefully months ago. trek gets 0 points for dragging it out this long when they couldn't even stick the landing.

they lasted this long due to the high they get for treating others like shit

i've modded before myself without help. i never once treated my players the way this mod treated their players in those caps. mod burnout is not an excuse for treating players who are bringing up fair and reasonable concerns about how an event is playing out like this.

they either need to shape up or not mod. if they were that burned out, it's on them for not doing the responsible thing and ending the game sooner before it got to this point.

Re: ayrt

the mod has treated everyone they've interacted with like this so the whole burnout thing holds no water

+1, I'm still friends with some of the former players. And the reason why a lot of them dropped was because they or their friends were treated horribly. Not solely because they couldn't keep up the game or RL got in the way.

Trek has been like this for years and has never learned a thing so I don't know why anyone is remotely surprised. There's no burnout here, they're just an asshole.

full sincerity mode here, this does beg the question on how to avoid mod burnout in the first place without being a jerkface. do you just write everything ahead of time or what?

Just don't reply asap when you're emotional. If you're feeling overwhelmed at that second, you got to hit the brakes and breathe and relax. Lashing out is an emotional response to that exact moment, and you can act so much better if you take just five minutes to calm down before responding.

Also be honest with yourself. If you are feeling burnt out, accept it and trust your players to understand. Most players do these days because majority of us are old enough to know RP isn't everything and mods are just people. If you have to end the game early for your own mental health, do so. I have seen mods end games within a month and just be honest about it, and I don't recall them getting wanked over it. People get disappointed, but that would happen every time a game ends, no matter how close or far endgame is.

1. Accept help when it's offered. Trek was very insistent on running the game theirself and never accepted offers of help with so much as checking AC/updating the taken list/generic regains. It was only in the last few months that player plots were allowed to take some of the pressure off, resulting in some pretty neat events.

2. Communicate with your players. For the love of god, don't ghost, go silent, offer snippy one-word responses to player questions without saying 'hey, I got some feelings going on.'

3. One of the things Trek did do that is worth (positive) note is they didn't always hold themself to a strict event schedule that was cramped and put extra pressure on them to deadline things. Sometimes things would go up later than anticipated. Sometimes a month would be event-light with more global effects in the setting than true events. That's okay! The players in Sail were very good at actively making their own fun.

language evolves so i’m not going to try to get into nitty gritty of what is and isn’t a word, but “themself” or “themselves” would have been more standard here. shrug.

speaking as a former mod who also modded a game solo for around 2 years: modding is exhausting and can be unrewarding at times, but trek has been known for being reactive and abrasive for years before they became a mod. burnout is no excuse for being rude to your players

this. Trek is just a raging jackass of the "I'm not mean I'm ~honest~" type.
