something big going down in clown town

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

i think it's just someone who cannot stand to be wrong on the internet so bad they'll shove their head firmly up their own ass just to be right

it's probably worse to argue with them

"If it sounds stupid but it works it ain't stupid"

I served as CR wingman/cockblock for one of my best friends for years in games. Had a lot of fun.

artists are already losing jobs to diffusion models and llms but ok, that isnt a problem because its not literally stealing money from you in particular right this second

I would be so happy if my thread partner picked our thread back up, no matter how long it had been. I'd tag them back no questions asked. It's never too late to go back to it, anon! Give it a go!

Yeah, definitely double downs syndrome. With a side of flippancy so they can pretend they’re being dumb on purpose when their position reaches critical, understandable levels of wrong.

who in this subthread said ai art isn't a problem?

the only thing brought up was that streaming/piracy is also theft but historically not as frowned upon in dwrp.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, because ai art is a much larger problem for everyone

equating them because "both mean i, personally, the most important artist in the zeitgeist, lose money" is myopic and self-serving

two things can't be questionable at the same time?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
they can be questionable at the same time

they are not equatable, and piracy is far more complicated than simply being theft whereas ai art is plagiarism on an unimaginable scale that will eventually completely uproot humans from art if we continue being complacent and speaking in whataboutisms about it

equating them because "both mean i, personally, the most important artist in the zeitgeist, lose money" is myopic and self-serving

im not sure how many more times i can explain this to you

Counting LJ and DW together, about 15 years on and off! I started in 2009 when my college roommate introduced me to a comm called Drama Drama Duck. The idea was that you could just drop in without having to be invited or apply, kind of like on Bakerstreet. Only instead of memes, you’d post in-character as if your character had a Livejournal account and was posting about their life. Other users would comment in-character on your post and you’d start a thread that way.

…Not something that would work very well on DW today, I think.

Anon I just wouldn't bother, you can go back and see this topic popping up every couple posts and certain anon or anons being obstinate af each time. It's just not worth engaging with them.

im the research engineer anon from yesterday

i appreciate that you mean well but im educated and i know what im talking about and i care so im going to bother every time because it matters to me that people grow a nuanced perspective on this

other anons itt trying to draw this comparison: i hate to break it to you but when diffusion models and llms actually start to hit your personal ability to get work and make a livelihood, your most effective form of protest is going to be piracy and the pirates are gonna be some of your best friends in protecting and fighting for your rights. its probably best you get acquainted now and revise your stances

Lmao all artists lose money to piracy and no amount of equivocating and dubious statistics will actually make that less true

theres certain pieces of art that would be gone forever without piracy because its a vital method of digital content preservation

do those pieces deserve to vanish forever because Piracy Bad

let's be real, those were more of a character claim than an app.

(CW: underage, grooming)

I loved you both as sisters and looked forward to every time we talked. However, I had a secret relationship which started when I was sixteen and he was thirty-six. For years, I thought it was true love, that we'd be together forever and when we did get married, I could tell the world about the two of us and the full story of our love.

Then he dumped me for a younger model. After twenty-five years together.

So I posted, heartbroken, on plurk.

And they both decided that since I hadn't told them about the relationship, they could never trust me again and I had to break off contact because it hurt too much.

Fast forward a year and due to a combination of pop culture references (hello, Snoke/Palpatine's treatment of Kylo Ren) and a lot of soul-searching and rethinking, I realized that I'd been groomed from the very beginning and gaslit throughout the relationship.

But now I have no friends to help me recover from the pain and the brain fuckery that someone I thought loved me would do that to me.

It hurts, man.

the instances where piracy has helped preserve content through online proliferation are few and incidental, and the intent behind the piracy was unlikely to have been archival. you can't legitimize a practice that has so far done much more bad to artists through a minority of good examples.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry for what happened to you anon. I've had to teach myself that some people want more out of their friendships in this place than just a buddy, especially in a creative hobby. When that shared passion goes away, it’s sometimes painful to maintain a different version of the friendship. It doesn't suck any less :(

(frozen comment) Re: Da

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
first off, not an answer to the question i asked. youve deflected

second, "few and incidental" is just plain incorrect. "few and incidental" cases that you know of, maybe. internet archive is full of content that is not kept anywhere else and is only preserved there, and i can guarantee you that not all of it is hosted there legally. does that media deserve to be wiped out because someone had to steal it to preserve it?

there is content being erased at this very moment because companies have massive control over what gets made and what doesnt and they do not think its guaranteed profit. digital content rights are literally being erased year over year to the point that its a question whether you actually own digital media youve purchased at all and companies are actively trying to control what kind of media you can consume

and if you dont think billionaires are salivating at the thought of replacing human artists with machines as these models improve with each and every consecutive genuine use of the technology then im sorry, youre either wilfully ignorant or just stupid. they dont care if ai art is "ugly" or if theres problems with it, they care that itll cut out chunks of a budget and produce a product they can sell faster
