something big going down in clown town

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

ive said it once and ill say it again

most diffusion models and large machine learning algorithms work by interconnecting prompts and output from each thing that they do. this is how they decide what was "good" and what was "bad"

if youre against how these tools are currently implemented, and you should be, then you wouldnt use them at all. youre contributing to them actively getting better at making plagiarism mash

sure, but that's not what heat death is. it has nothing to do with climate change.

whether it was really worth pointing out here in this thread is another story, but ayrt isn't wrong that atrt used it incorrectly

i'm presuming in good faith that you're fairly new to pro art or just getting started, and i'm sorry for this very long reply. i've been drawing professionally for over a decade, including product packaging and published covers; here's my 2 cents on this whole thing.

1. no matter what, unless you sign over the IP licences in perpetuity for your artwork to someone else (which a lot of big companies make you do, like disney/marvel/dc), your art is yours. forever (technically your lifetime + 100 years after you die, then it enters public domain). there are so many laws protecting authorship all over the world, it's why disney has its reputation for suing and winning cases over smaller artists.

2. it has been repeatedly demonstrated that illegal streaming or uploading does not in fact lessen sales, but does the opposite. people want to have physical copies, not rent a download that disappears from their account. amazon is being sued for this, and netflix and disney are fighting inquiries about this practice also. a lot of publishing houses are actually seeing a steep rise in physical book sales especially among the 15-25 demographic. this includes hardcopy comics and manga.

3. another anon already pointed it out in this thread, but "lost sales" from piracy is misleading. a lot of media can't be legally purchased because of different licencing laws between countries; even if people want to buy a physical copy and have the money to do so, if there's no way to access the media legally, that sale is not gonna happen legally. what happens instead is most people pirate things, then purchase physical versions later down the line when the material gets syndicated or franchised. the money isn't lost; it's just not reflected immediately, which is what big companies prefer.

4. AI art, on the other hand, is extremely damaging because it claims it has a legal right to exist via creative commons, which are a set of IP laws(? iirc, it's been a while) that provide exceptions to modified copies of media. HOWEVER, what ai artbros do in bad faith is monetize their models or turn their generated images into NFTs, which goes against the spirit of creative commons. creative commons was designed to allow exceptions for educational, commentary, or artistic purposes. that's why news clips can show certain clips with credit, and why non-monetized reaction videos on youtube usually don't get taken down.

5. whereas pirating media often leads to sales down the line, as well as provide author exposure (for better or worse), ai art fucks that up by impacting author reputation (already mentioned elsewhere on this thread).

for example: a james jean print on average runs around 1.2k USD. these are exclusive, quality-controlled, and authenticated by his estate. an ai gen-art bot trained on his works that is then churning out garbage and polluting the internet search databases not only poisons his google search results, potential collectors and clients could be actively scammed. US IP law specifically places the responsibility of proving authorship on the author, and it's really damn hard to prove a negative. james jean has the money to defend himself, but imagine if it's you having to fight a bunch of scammed collectors or clients demanding their money back.

then there's also ai art of taylor swift depicted as being SA'd that made the rounds on twitter, plus a case of a 14 y.o. teenager committing fatal self-harm after ai-generated deepfakes of them having sex were circulated in their school. both of these happened this year iirc. the same tech that creates these heinous images are also powering your anime waifu img gens. let that sit in your mind for a bit.

6. the general consensus among serious media collectors is if you are being forced to pay for access to things you've already bought digitally, then piracy is not only moral but necessary for preserving the media. goes back to #2; this is why amazon is being sued, because they're making people pay twice for services and products that supposedly were already included in the prime subscriptions.

short version of all of this: media piracy is a symptom of a much larger problem that isn't the fault of the consumer but how the industry conducts business. ai art is actively harming artists. these are two vastly different things and ai/nft/techbros are counting on your confusion to keep getting away with their scams.

I can't remember the name of the dressing room now, but I may have played in that one too! I also remember a hilarious China and some other really excellent mainstays.

let's say ai art eventually stops using stolen art and becomes ethical one day in the future

how does this somehow make the people who are using it now, when it is unethical, somehow better

(Anonymous) 2024-04-03 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
That you immediately unfollowed me everywhere and stopped messaging me for good when I said I wouldn't be able to continue our psl is kind of an extreme reaction when we've been friends for over 3 years. I'm too busy to be as present online as I was and I understand that might've frustrated you, but why unfollow me on my personal accounts? Why no more being friendly?

Still kind of in disbelief that it suddenly ended this way tbh.

"youre contributing to them actively getting better at making plagiarism mash" is my personal real sticking point when it comes to seeing people casually using ai generation and acting like it's just a little thing having no impact on anybody

literally the more free training this shit gets, the better it becomes at fucking over artists. "oh i'm just making a pic or two" yeah you and a hundred other lazy assholes, which means that thing just got a hundred more prompts to practice aping styles with

best way to discourage this shit shy of all artists data poisoning all their work is also shaming the shit out of people using it until it becomes an actively undesirable thing to get caught using

I don't agree that it's that unethical when not used *in place of* hiring an artist. It falls around the same level of unethical to me as watching a pirated movie, when used in this context.

tl;dr I just don't care that much. I would like better regulations around the use of AI for profit and limitations on how it can be trained but I don't think everyone who uses it is literally satan.

It was aphdressingroom or something like that. I remember an amazing, Nyo!Prussia there that I shipped with. It was a lot of fun (and a lot of cringe looking back, lol)!

Know it's probably not gonna happen, and they don't have much interest anymore. But it'd be great to see dressing rooms come back in some way, shape, or form.

you think this because you dont understand how they work

using these ai tools is giving them free training. they interconnect outputs and prompts. this is how diffusion and machine learning algorithms decide what outputs satisfied the prompts and what didnt. regardless of whether you make money or not, you are contributing to your own obsolescence by using them

im not sure how many more fucking times i have to tap this sign before people on here stop with the "im not profiting so its fine!! uwu" bullshit. stop. sit down. you dont know what youre talking about.

i do actually understand how they work.

i simply draw the line for myself at a different place than you do and that's fine. talking down to me isn't going to get me to agree with you, and i don't need you to agree with me. the op asked for people's opinions and i gave mine.

lmao. im a research engineer who has specialized in projects involving creating and training machine learning algorithms for industrial automation, particularly machine vision-based ones

im not talking down to you. i just know what im talking about, and also know you DONT know what youre talking about, because im educated

its unethical regardless and if you dont care just say that instead of "its bad of course BUT" or spinning hypotheticals about how itll totally be more ethical in the future. it wont be because people are just as complacent and brainless as you are and are happy to exploit their fellows so long as it helps them personally cut a corner or two.

so just say it with your full chest and get it over with instead of being a coward
