Obscure characters need to do a lot more tagging out, and/or need to mention what they'll mesh with in their top-level comments:

[Character is a barista in an urban fantasy setting who's secretly a witch. Looking for werewolf/vampire/other urban fantasy characters, or normal people who are ignorant to her secret but might need a magical pick-me-up!]

[Character is a rogue cyborg owned by an insurance company, intended to provide security to clients. Perhaps it's acting as your character's bodyguard? Meshes well with other sci-fi canons.]

[Character is a magical girl from a post-apocalyptic dystopia city. I'd love to play off other magical girls or general anime protagonists.]

What above anon said, plus: have decent icons. DWRPers are visual animals, you know it, I know it, there's always some players with the tendency to make snap judgments about a character or player based on their icons. On a basic bitch level, an icon with a handsome/pretty person (nice art or good-looking PB) is more appealing than an ugly/vague/blurry icon (Sims screencaps, some symbol on a wall, etc).

Having icons that showcase any unusual or special aspects of the character also helps create a quick first impression or hook for the canonblind. Do they have horns? Are they wearing a mask or superhero costume? Facial scars; any interesting stories behind the scars? Will their outfit look out of place in the setting (eg. fantasy armor in a sci-fi setting)? Why is the character grinning like a serial killer in a chill cafe meme? And so on.

hmmm, anons. how do you handle it when a canon is bad at the whole showing vs telling thing, and how a character is depicted as acting doesn't mesh with what you're told the character should read as?

like, idk, as a random example say character a is introduced to you by character b saying they're haughty and self-centered. and that's generally agreed on by the characters in canon that interact with character a, like yup they sure are haughty and self-centered. except every time we see character a say or do anything they might only just come off as a little quiet or distant at worst, and they donate to the save the puppies fund very obviously; certainly not bad enough to be regarded universally as 'yeah that guy sucks, totally full of it.' maybe one or two characters might not mesh, personalitywise, but if it's the majority of them then canon clearly wants us to think a certain way about that character.

in rp, do you:

a) portray them as they are portrayed as speaking and behaving in canon, and if in rp other characters don't end up having the same general opinion/impressions of them as the other characters in canon then handwave it away internally if it ever comes up with a 'huh, weird, but maybe the other characters in canon x just had a lot of biases that the characters in [rp] don't have'?

b) introduce some minor behaviors and quirks to nudge them toward whatever canon says they're supposed to read as, or retool their psychology to make them take more actions that would read that way or something. tweak the portrayal of them a bit to make the tell match the show?

c) realize that you might in fact just be the haughty and self-centered bitch with no lick of self awareness, and reevaluate your existence?

d) some other option?

finally reading this old ass manga and realizing the protagonist is totally my type of character and he will be a blast to play

I have a male character who I think would be PERFECT for this scenario! What genre were you looking to set this in? Modern, fantasy, sci-fi? Also what are your thoughts on some body mods? My A character would love for B to prove himself loyal by branding or tattooing or piercings oooorrr all three.

Out of curiosity, anon, just how far have you even gotten in this thread??? When you're getting three tags a decade, that just seems so dispiriting. I couldn't go on no matter how desperate or thirsty I was.

Six months, with me being the one responding. Someone outside of us had apparently been tracking the thread and actually sent me a message saying they were happy I had tagged it back so there was more to follow. I was SO embarrassed!

I remember someone asking a similar question a while back, if that was you then idk. The answers are probably not going to be much different.

Honestly? You'll have to do the work in tagging out as much as you can until people notice your character. If they aren't a.) from a popular canon, b.) conventionally attractive, c.) with good icons, you're going to struggle no matter what if you wait. People might say otherwise, but the fact is a lot of people don't have time to check every single top-level, and so they'll tackle the ones they're familiar with or find visually appealing immediately.

So the only way to make people interested is to tag out until people notice your character. Tagging out will always be your best bet even if your character is popular though.

I've always wanted to put Cody Jarrett from White Heat in a game and see where he goes! He's always felt like he has amazing potential no matter what point of the movie I'd take him from. Just never found the right moment plus I'd need to get some icons made. Rick or Louis from Casablanca and David and Susan from Bringing Up Baby are ones I've also considered.

Apped to a game on a whim last March. Celebrating my character being there a year this month! Apped to another game on a whim in September and my character has been there ever since! So glad impulse apping both times worked out well for me.

I don't know why you ran so hot and cold to me when we tagged. You really seemed to like our threads and talked about them positively.....up until you didn't. Now you'll tag everyone else in the game but ignore my character, which is supremely awkward when we have so much CR in common, and have even taken to ignoring me OOC.

Did I do or say something wrong? If I did, I wish you would have told me. If I didn't, I wish you could have put on your big-girl panties and told me just didn't want to play with me for whatever reason instead of just giving me the cold shoulder.

You're right about the lack of clarity in how I described the situation/my reaction, mostly I'm trying to obscure details so that it doesn't get glaringly specific, but hopefully enough people have snarky IC network slapfights that it's not immediately obvious.

The other player clearly wants to build up our CR in a positive smutty way. I guess I feel weird about the IC situation because if it were just a matter of our characters arguing, maybe my character would do a shit job apologizing or they could argue some more and then kiss, whatever. But it was our characters arguing and then their CR circle piling on to yell at my character, which is fine OOC but IMO, less easily resolved IC? All players involved got the okay to IC yell at my character, but is it fair to the other player that other player characters' actions negatively impact our CR? Does it sound like I'm the person who gave OOC permission for IC actions but then am taking it personally if I say, "Actually, my character's feelings were super hurt by this, even though they instigated the situation. I don't think the smut stuff you're proposing would work for them."

Or maybe I'm just overthinking it and making things more complicated than they have to be. =/

I'm generally down for any genre - I do have a particular fondness for sci-fi or fantasy, but modern is also good for the superhero genre, so I guess it depends on what sort of powers your character dabbles in and can teach! I'm also *totally* down for body mods (barring anything super extreme, like limb removal), and they'd be a really fun way to physically mark the progression of their relationship and show possessiveness/loyalty!

What character were you thinking of using; canon or OC?

Haha, sorry for misunderstanding, nonny. Yeah... I actually usually like the negative CR to smut pipeline but it just doesn't work very well for this character.

yeah, I pretty often see them doing toplevels on bakerstreet, so they're still around and still active with that muse. I did consider the idea that maybe rl got in the way for them and they thought too long had passed since they responded to me so they felt too awkward about backtagging, but who knows! maybe one day we'll connect again ^^

A canon one from Star Wars, so the powers would be the usual Force user combo platter of telekinesis, telepathy (which could definitely be fun for smut as well as manipulation), enhanced physical durability, that sort of thing.

i just tag out and basically never bother topleveling

sometimes i'll get threads dropped, sometimes i'll get threads that go on for months. i have better luck on gen memes than shippy memes for threads that continue forever, but rarely do i feel like people plain don't want to thread with me on ship memes. (i think people just have shorter attention spans for ship memes if a ship isn't scratching their specific itch, which is the same experience i have in games. if two chars hit it off well in gen you might be able to move into ship threading naturally anyway.)
