I think some people are very aware of how exhausting it can be to be a villain player when there are some people who use it as an excuse to make their character into a woobie victim and turn a whole game against someone who just showed up and they're very worried about subjecting someone to that. Aside from making it clear you're happy for negative CR there's not much to be done about it sadly.

Hijacking your thread, sorry. For me the game started out as having lots of plot built into the setting, so it was plotty horror but in a slice of life way; and it's a sex game so there's lots of relationship focus. Now the metaplot and mod NPCs are in full force and the horror has become dark and constant, and the sex game elements are all heavy kink and noncon, leading to the kinds of people apping who want to play that, and the overall tone of the game shifting.

Nonsense example: Mods say there is a big skeletal creature that every month picks up your character and throws them into the sky and they have to play collaborative snakes and ladders to get down, meaning it's easy to get interaction and have something to thread about, but it could be direct snake fighting or resting and tending wounds after falling off a ladder - regardless it's always self-directed, and players could build homes and start businesses and have parties around the giant skeleton's feet. There were mod plots that involved the slice of life elements and encouraged shipping and settling, as well as sex game plots that threw characters into into intimate scenarios without horror-conflict.

However lately the mods have written a bunch of skeleton lore and skeleton-worshipping NPCs and secrets about the skeleton to find out, and businesses and houses get stepped on by the skeleton, a lot of the "mod approval" aspects have become more micromanaged, skeleton-plot involvement gets heavily rewarded, and the snakes and ladders is constant and has higher stakes added, with lots of restrictions to stop powerful characters winning.

I truly believe mods should run the game they want to run and I am glad noncon horror lovers have a game for them! It's clear that this is just the genre being enforced. But I hate that like "dark horror" and "relationship-building slice of life" get kind of morally pitted against each other in a way where they're seen as exclusionary to each other, and that there's this really scornful attitude of "you shouldn't play tea parties during the apocalypse that's not what this space is for" that is alienating a lot of the game's original playerbase, especially because the initial premise was kind of "it's the apocalypse but there are these tea parties you can attend".

What I enjoyed about this game was that the darker moments allowed characters to rely on each other and have things to deal with/talk about after, but there was also space for them to achieve and build something together. That my character could rescue another from snakes and then take them home for tea. They could be tortured or injured but then have space to work through that and heal. I don't want to be in a game like (the impression I got of) the City where there's very little to react to and it's all Life Sim with no external conflict to sink teeth into, but I really think this has become a darker game than I was expecting and I'm going to have to give up all my CR and go somewhere else.

(If anyone has recs for horror games that have "tea party during the apocalypse" vibes, and are at least adult content friendly, please drop them here!)

I know it's not the point of this but tbh I'm curious about what game this is? Your description is up my alley tbh, very dark horror with strong noncon/heavy kink elements is very much something I'd be down for.

What are your thoughts on PBs when you play the book version of a character: okay to use icons from their LA adaptation, or better not to, to avoid confusion about which version you're rping?

rubilykskoye (i'm also in the game and this description is accurate). it's invite only and capped but it's not difficult to find an invite.

it is confusing if you use live action icons for a book character. it will mean that people only familiar with the live action, or people who don't know the series at all, will assume they're playing with that version. that said sometimes it can be so hard to find a decent pb, or the fanart for the series is terrible or doesn't exist, and the live action casting is so spot on that it's the only option. i've also seen people use one journal to play multiple versions.

personally i think you should use whatever you feel more comfortable with. it might cause one or two people to be confused but ultimately you're the one rping the character so you should have fun with it. you just might have to make it very clear in comments and their profile that you're playing from the book version.

i play a character from a book series that has a live action adaptation and the casting is spot-on for them. just add a disclaimer somewhere easily accessible like the journal profile and say you're using the la pb but playing from the original material. it's what i do and i've never had problems with it.

Players rp from animated/drawn adaptations of (light/web)novels all the time without touching the source material, it's no different.

Like above anons mentioned, just add a note if you want to differentiate and people should understand.

As somebody that came back recently, from 2017, it hasn't changed too much except the invite only thing. That takes some getting used to especially if you rp lesser known characters after being gone so long.

Had a friend become a little upset with me when I mentioned that I really didn't like honkai star rail. It wasn't anything too bad, just a minor arguement; mentioned that I thought it was a boring and uninteresting, predatory gacha. Didn't think I was really attacking them or their tastes personally, just mentioning my opinion when asked.

They've been super into it lately, however, and began to really, really defend it, before logging out of discord.

They're still talking to me, and I apologized. But I still feel bad about it because I think they were really wanting to get me into it and share it with me. But... I just can't get into it.

Also in the game and I don't wanna invalidate your feelings about the dark tone or direction of the plot, anon, but... I think people are still having teapartyesque personal events? At least that's the impression I got the impression from plurk plotting and cr meme announcements about [ character a's ] party or [ character b's ] housewarming or what have you. I'm not in any cr circles where the parties are happening so it's mostly going on in my periphery, but I do think you could get in on that or try to set one up yourself if you wanted. Especially after a few plot heavy horror months, I suspect people are hankering for settling down a bit with lighter threads despite the tense setting backdrop.

Again I don't wanna tell you how to feel or whether things are a good fit for you, but I hope you're able to get the kinds of cr and threads you want, either in game or some other fun place.

say you're not interested but don't call your friends' interests boring and predatory to their faces. that's not just being honest with your opinion, that's graceless
