see for me that was the point where i got puzzled because it didn't feel deserved to me. up until that point nothing had happened to imply korra was closer to asami than the brothers in any way, so why the correspondence favoritism? it's disappointing because just one deeper conversation with just the two of them before then could have fixed it and made it feel more natural, but they went for "tell don't show" instead.

feel like a game i'm in is moving in a direction i am not particularly enjoying and i'm not sure what to do about it / how to offer feedback to the mod team that won't come off as just "you changed it stop changing it" or whining.

i've come to terms with the fact that i will probably just have to drop soon. this isn't the game i wanted to app into so there's no point sticking around being frustrated about it when it's clearly what the mods and other players want. not all games work out.

as someone not in the fandom, how popular was zuko/aang back in the day? i'm curious because i saw recently zuko/sokka a lot, and i kept wondering if it was not to mess with katara/aang or to have a only dicks version of katara/zuko

Is it the type of game that has a big plot or is it supposed to be more sandbox-like or SOL?

If it's plot heavy then big changes are what you sign up for when you join a game like that so there isn't much you can do because there is always a risk any plot will go in a direction you don't enjoy. The good news is that plots move all the time, so be patient and it will probably change or offer a better hook.

If it's not plot heavy and meant to be more slice of life with occasional events to shake things up (and generally maintain a status quo) you can offer feedback emphasizing the parts of the game you did like if you feel like they are missing or neglected by whatever has changed? If it's part of an overall mod plot you can reach out to the mods who might be able to give you an idea of how the plot will progress so you can have a better idea of how to participate without spoiling it. It's not an uncommon ask especially if a game takes a major turn and it might only be temporary.

going from memory? i think there was enough of it that one didn't feel starved, at least. coming from smaller fandoms it was plenty to work with. it didn't have the ginormous hordes that either zutara or kataang commanded, but it definitely existed in a way that it can't really be said that zukka did. it was more or less an alternative to the other two configurations? and while there was some element of the classic late 00s 'ew girls gross' that made its way into of the work, overall it was never as hostile to the girl as certain other big fandoms of the time could be. it wasn't ever really a player in the ship wars, it kind of just minded its own business, probably because it was smaller. my overall takeaway from zukaang of the late 2000s is that it was a pretty chill space, not even in comparison to the zutara/kataang ship wars. if we start comparing then it starts feeling like a last bastion of sanity, but then anything short of frothing threats and insults on your intelligence would.

imo the zukka ship as a concept really only gained any popularity/staying power in a post-2016 voltron (read: klance) fandom environment, probably because while there's some superficial similarities to sokka and zuko (less spotlighted older brother to talented prodigy younger sister), and some superficially fun but ultimately fairly generic theming ideas you could try to work in (red and blue contrast, fire to water, fighter to planner) there really isn't very much to their actual existing canon dynamic unless you're hard projecting massive amounts of fanon accumulated characterization clutter on them. in the modern fandom environment overall zukka is the easier 'default' slash ship simply because they're the only two regularly recurring male cast members without a couple of years' age gap, which has become more of a taboo in modern fandom.

i don't think the rise in zukka is to be a dicks version of zutara. sokka isn't really remotely equivalent to katara character wise, because katara is very emotional and led by the heart, which means she can fly off the handle at the drop of a hat if the trigger is right, and sokka ... doesn't, he's the plans guy of the group even if in the beginning he starts as 'haha meat and funny guy jokes'. katara and zuko play into each other and would feed each other's rash and emotionally driven decisions (as seen in the whole revenge episode) in a way that sokka in her place wouldn't. zuko and sokka's field trip to prison on the other hand had that element of desperation because they needed to save their friends/family, but sokka is pretty in control of himself the entire way through as opposed to katara who only realizes revenge isn't the way once she's got the kill shot lined up.

All of my threads are going at a snail's pace, even the ones that started with boomeranging. I don't want to take on more so I don't get overwhelmed but I feel like a clown checking my inbox and hoping for signs of life. And no, it isn't just this holiday weekend.

yeah, it sucks because i like my cr and the players there just not sure i'll be able to keep myself motivated if it keeps moving in the direction it's been moving.

so i'll probably give it a bit longer and then figure it out.

cuz i hate to break it to you: the first book is the easiest to get through/understand. if you're already having this much trouble with the first book... dune isn't going to be for everyone, and that's ok. don't jump onto a thing just because it's popular right at this moment.

kinda plot heavy and i'm not sure if it's just my tastes don't align with the people running it or the execution but it's not gelling for me. not really anyone's fault. gonna give it a bit more time, i think.

oh damn i wasn't expecting such a detailed answer, thank you! re: the last part, i would like to clarify that i know sokka and katara have different personalities but when it comes to fandom simplifying characters into tropes (like you said water/fire, cheery/moody) i didn't trust them with this one, if you know what i mean

it's stuff i would probably make OCs for rather than using zuko and sokka though, flesh those out, add in other tropes i like, etc.. neither of their personalities interest me together because at the end of the day, sokka is a gag character first and foremost and while he has his moments, he is just always the comic relief much like bolin. honestly, if you smash zuko and sokka together and make them brothers you get mako and bolin anyway

yeah like, there's bits and tropes that could be involved in zukka in theory that you could use to sell people on it if you stretch it, but it basically feels like the equivalent of tiktok trying to sell you on a book by saying it contains found family, lovers to enemies, poc relationships: lots of trope buzzwords about stuff that tends to crop up often in things people like but don't actually tell you anything about the book you'll be reading.

in the end canon zukka is kind of really a nothing dynamic, so anything that makes zukka worth reading is going to be letting the derivative/transformative work thing do a lot of the heavy lifting of making people care about it. that or maybe the basically blank slate is the draw so that they can project or carry over whatever pet dynamics people have from other ships they like that are superficially similar, idk.

i think this is your answer tbh. girls are ~nice~. i remember a teacher saying she was relieved to have girls in her class because the previous year she only had boys and it was absolute nightmare (apparently there were constant farting and burping contests)

Since you mentioned in another reply that it's plot-heavy, I'd go to the mods with feedback, but give specific instances of why you're not gelling with the current plots. Is it a horror game and there's been too many plots lately that revolve around making cupcakes in the Apocalypse because people are "burnt out" on the horror? Is everything feeling a bit too samey, like for example have there been six party posts in a row from various people? (That actually happened in a game around Christmas one year in a game I was in, it was awkward.) Are the plots revolved around allowing heavy hitters and superpowered types in the game to do something while the more normal characters are left without anything to do?

I'd also see if you could come up with at least one idea for a plot big or small you want to see. Even if it's just "The zombie plot was cool, can we follow it up with zombie animals at no one realized got infected in the last plot?" that gives them something to work off of. A lot of mods I'm friends with have related the struggle of coming up with plots every month, so having someone approach them with an idea can give them some inspiration.

Just started this last night and I'm so excited to see where it goes

writing an RP game for 2025. worried about reception, if the motivation is going to stick around for the year it'll take to run the game, if it'll even be possible to find co-mods, if the prompts are any good, if the game idea is any good.

trying to remind myself that even if the game completely crashes and burns, that's not the end of RP forever. just the end of that idea.
