If you're mostly looking for the background/setting info, the appendices should cover what you need. The actual narrative doesn't get much into the whys and wherefores of the world.

Granted, I think the book is very much worth reading in general -- it's one of the most classic founding sci-fi works. But as a prerequisite to picking up the characters, I don't think you need to worry too much.

hard disagree. zutara as a ship was basically just that one necklace scene from the pirate episode and the inherent symbolism of fire and water. korrasami meanwhile was rife with bi-girl awakening chemistry from basically the beginning.

zutara only had "chemistry" if you think wanting to beat a motherfucker's ass into the dirt is a romantic overture.

agree on your zutara assessment (that plus "the fire nation took my mother from me" but lbr who didn't lose their mother to the fire nation in this series)

hard disagree on korrasami tho. there was zero chemistry there until that wedding scene in the last episode when it suddenly came out of NOWHERE, because this entire series wasted its relationship building time honing on the shitty het love triangle. love square if we're including bolin in the equation, but that was only season one at least.

i'm definitely not going to defend most of the relationship writing in LOK, i think that show gets a largely bad rap but the mako love triangle was definitely abhorrent. (also while i dislike zutara, i can at least respect its shippers; makorra stans are fully delusional).

that being said, i do think korra and asami had great interpersonal chemistry even if it actually turning into a relationship might be a little out of nowhere. arguably. the car racing together, their bonding during most of season three and the blimp hijacking and shit, asami being the only one korra responded to via letter in season 4? there was a lot of shit there, it was just really low-key, and i'm giving bryke the benefit of the doubt that it was due to nickeldeon being very touchy about putting the gays in their cartoons. i am also, however, a yuri fan first and a person second so i'll grant i may have just been seeing what i wanted to see (and thus no better than any other shipper)

try annotating. find yt content discussing the book to help understand content. or read along with a audiobook version. could be ways to make the reading more engaging.
