no no, as one of the koreanons, this is actually fun when i'm with some of my closer rp friends and we're both coming at it from a place of understanding. these are also the friends i trust to make longer narratives with and not just one off pwp, though. i mean, we do both, but i trust these friends to build stuff thoughtfully with me either way. when we dig into language, it's because we're interested in how it affects the narrative and what it means to bring up language in the first place. with randos... i don't trust like that, you know?

very interested to hear how the concept of non-westerners dropping unnecessary phrases in east asian languages into their english language rp slots into this worldview. is it still "language use by western imperialist nations" if it's someone from russia or greece or morocco doing it?

i am a fluent non-native speaker of mandarin who was a huge firefly fan while i was in high school... when i was taking my chinese language and culture classes.

once or twice fandom stuff made me screw up in class because a mangled term was so common, but usually it just turned me into a weird chinese grammar snob sitting on her hands constantly. the saving grace was not being the only high school chinese language student having this problem.

nowadays i am fluent and use the language daily and the fandom language stuff would probably be more interesting as fictional linguistic drift created deliberately and how does that work. back then? extremely annoying

nah, it just makes the person in question sound goofy and thoughtless. which isn't a moral or ethical failing at all, but it doesn't make me feel like we'll be good rp partners.

whether this is a clumsy move of the goalposts or an earnest question, this question smells a bit like a redditor flexing their whataboutism. i'm tired of answering questions with such an obvious answers, personally.

closest I get is add ons to browsers. what are you using? generally you can find an add on to dl all the images on a page which is...slightly less irritating than doing them one by one even if it's still not ideal.

i'm on chrome but don't mind using firefox. the bulk downloader i did try only grabbed the thumbnails, so i'm hoping there's something better out there.

you know what, that's completely fair, and i'll admit i asked this question less in good faith than i should have; it was like 50% genuine curiosity (cos you say the answer is obvious, and i mostly agree, but you never know; people have all sorts of opinions on the internet) and 50% snark from an eastern european anon who is annoyed by people lumping me and mine in with westerners -- but those people aren't you, i basically just preemptively got mad at an opinion i have previously encountered that i thought you might have, which was dickish of me. so i'm sorry for that, and cheers for answering in earnest

depending on the site you can just save the website from the browser menu, but that's one big depending.

i get that, anon. in some areas of the internet i've been, i'm seeing some very tiresome "but what about the people being racist about white people :'c" talking points, arguing the same old arguments about racism when the actual words they're trying to avoid are discrimination and stereotyping. there's not a hint of common sense in it and that's probably because they're deliberately flattening the discourse for that delicious attention. i suppose i saw that energy in this question when it wasn't really there.

i do mean my answer, but i do realize i may have come off as dismissive in my phrasing. i do empathize, anon, these conversations can be so exclusionary and nuanceless.

this one is neither but i feel it's the same thing as when someone makes an american oc in a random state and gets everything wrong, since not all states have the same culture. here it's the same, like they picked a city but none of the things that they wrote fits that city at all and makes me think they're thinking of stereotypes they read off the internet instead.

i think my best advice is to write what you know. (i suppose that's the thing i see people get wrong: they write fantasies of people, not people who can be known.) which is a slippery slope, i know, but i don't mean to say you shouldn't write a character from outside your culture. outside doing your due diligence on trying to get regional and cultural details right and paying attention to every detail of your given canon, there isn't much you can do in terms of cultural accuracy.

as a korean person, i loved cardcaptor sakura growing up, and it wouldn't take me more than a second to slap together an app for sakura and throw her into a game. i know the canon from front to back, i've been to japan a lot, and i've done research for my other 100 japanese canons to know what is very classically japanese, what is very anime, and what an average japanese person would feel about sakura's relative status and place in society would be, as well as how she would probably contextualize these things. but i think the number one way i'd approach playing her is by looking into what draws me to her character in the first place. i then focus on how to write these things in most truthful way i can without discounting her experiences.

although i've never been a japanese middle schooler, i did grow up in a single parent home with a rough but doting relationship with an older sibling, and we both share having the dead parent's memory cherished and glorified even if we never met them. i know i can write a character who has to learn to rely on a dogged sense of optimism over the often discouraging realities around her. (i've also taught myself to rollerskate and make homemade chocolates, things she also learned how to do, and i understand the little finicky challenges inherent to both). these are things i know. i would focus on bringing that sort of truth to writing her. everything else culturally is window dressing, things that shape the way she would approach her challenges in life versus the way i would.

once you get to that level of thoughtfulness in writing outside of your experience, there is literally only a handful of ways to really fuck it up, and most of them involve you not trying your best to do your character justice. at that point, i'd personally forgive just about anything.

honestly just do some surface level research for anything not explicitly covered by canon IF it actually comes up. if you're focusing more on the actual character and what makes them interesting or relatable rather than a vessel for which to pretend you're a cultural ambassador (complete with hot take on how asia totally doesn't have mental health care at all) you'll probably be fine.

This is a good take, anon, I like it. The focus should be on playing the character who incidentally is from x country, not "a character from x country who incidentally is this person" and the worse examples coming up in this thread seem to be more caught up in "playing somebody from x country/culture" than what makes the character itself unique as a person.

I play a character who canon likes to remind the audience is from x country by having the character speak their language and do cultural things that can be baffling to those not from the country (eg. a non-Japanese character drinking alcohol in the company of Japanese teenager characters while the character is not 20 yet). Canon itself handles this part of their depiction without making the character a stereotype or caricature, and in rp I should also take the same care to do so.

After the Nov 5 superhell episode, they tagged me back. No DM, no acknowledgement that any amount of time had passed, but they were sporting a season...8 (I think) Sam icon.

hey anon, that situation sucks and I have no advice for it in particular but let me tell you

i love people who share boundaries and speak up when they aren't into something. this is pretend playtime and i want the person i am playing with to be into what we're playing. i know DWRP is the land of silent introverts who don't discuss stuff but, for serious, if someone reacts badly to you politely declining then they're the problem, not you.
