for all that p5 peters out on its antiestablishment and authority theming about halfway through, i absolutely hated the way p4 ultimately handled its supposed themes of self acceptance the entire way through. it very much reads 'conservative older japanese writers try to write a story that's superficially about struggling with how one's self makes them not fit in properly...' then flubs the landing hard and ends up in 'ok but now actually that you know about yourself a little more and accept it as a part of you, bury it again only with more self awareness so you can be a productive member of society'. ultimately i don't rank it any better than p5 in terms of 'bless their hearts, they made an attempt but didn't remotely commit.'

i also suspect the uncomfortable writing that was already showing its flaws back when it came out might not have aged super well, as well, but can't really say for sure since it's been a long time since i played p4.

as someone who's canonblind to p5, what is misleading/ill-informed about their comment?

imo that anon just depicts and misinterprets a bunch of characters and plots in the most misleading and uncharitable way?

some p5 spoilers up ahead and cw suicide and abuse, but for example futaba the "suicidal neet" is like that because she saw her mother commit suicide in front her and blames herself for it, so she becomes a shut-in. ryuji 'hates his teacher' because said teacher BROKE HIS LEG and basically fucked him over in the main thing he was good at (track) and also abused the hell out of his track teammates over because said teacher is a power tripping asshole. like lbr p5 isn't perfect story-wise but the characters' motivations and what drives them to join up with the MC are pretty well defined and fleshed out in a realistic way to me.

the 'change of heart' mechanic that's core to the game isn't some weird erasure of flaws get out of jail free card - to me it's more like the (wishful thinking) idea of being able to unravel whatever is so rotten at the hearts of certain people so that they see what they've done through clear eyes - the rapist suddenly feeling the crushing weight of all the lives they've harmed, the financial fraudster overwhelmed with the guilt of swindling people out of their life savings, that sort of thing. and having the "power" to do that is i think one of the better in-game motivations for a group of teens to take crazy risks and do wild shit in hopes of being able to change things.

this is exactly right and why i enjoy p5 despite its flaws

here's the back of the book blurb for you without going into how well it is or isn't written or how it compares to the rest of the series:

Teens who have been repeatedly failed or let down by society and or the adults around them if not outright abused by them discover the magical power to make the worst offenders repent/confess to all of their sins/turn themselves in for actual prosecution, etc etc, loudly and publically. Vigilante action ensues, with their 'superhero' (they leave phantom thief style calling cards for their targets) personae eventually developing a parasocial fanbase. Complications and ethical and moral quandaries also arise, culminating in... well, you find out! Or not.

The game really hammers in that the change of heart doesn't fix any the villains' flaws, just forces them to see things from a new perspective. The main characters are even warned that the guilt might make targets commit suicide rather than try to improve themselves or atone for their crimes. You'd have to be skipping large portions of the dialogue to miss it.

For me, it generally takes actually knowing the other half of the ship. I put that there so my friends or game CR can tag me without randos wandering by and assuming they're not respecting my prefs. I have a couple characters I see as mostly straight, but potentially flexible with just the right dynamic.

It depends on the meme. If it's a gen meme or an altered states meme (sex pollen, etc) I'll go OTA.

As someone who is feeling a little like OP, I +100 this. If they have a problem with you saying this, that's their problem! (Most rpers don't realize they're hogging the stage, so to speak, so this is good feedback to give tbh.)

good take. original anon's post felt willfully ignorant, if not purposefully bad faith, towards the characters. p5 has plenty of flaws, but most people would agree they're in the overarching plot and overall thematic cohesion, not the way the characters are written.

i wasn't a kpop enjoyer at the time of the former, but the latter was my ult. i knew the industry was bad, but i had hope it was getting better, or at least that fantagio wasn't as garbage as the bigger companies... nope. i haven't been able to engage in kpop the same since. i took the day off work to mourn with my wife and we went to a kpop store an hour+ away from us to contribute to the memorial set up for him there. bin was such a talented, bright young man. i hate the industry that took that from the world.

i'm so sorry about her, anon, that shit was truly unfair. it really did feel like the light was sucked away at that point. i can finally listen to airplane without (a lot of) the pain anymore, but it really took a while.

i took the day off yesterday to recuperate and i think i feel mostly ok now. i don't know if i have much more to say that i can't eventually go over with my therapist, but the determination from fellow fans to do good, to try to put more life in the world in their absence, has always been really lovely to see. thank you so much, anon. 🩵

i feel that, anon. my one concession for ~that company~ after the dbsk fiasco was that one group. i don't know why i thought they learned their lesson. i guess i was hoping that there was a soul in charge there, or at least some common sense.

it's been a long road, and while i don't regret what i loved, i regret that i trusted so much. after over two decades of this, if i had a message for your friend, if she's in a listening mood... i've learned to never let them lie to you, no matter how much you love the illusion. please, please remember that.

i'm so, so sorry anon. i still think about jjong a lot, but it's mostly in terms of how proud i've always been of his accomplishments. it took me several years to get to this point, and it's never been easy, but i'm so grateful that he was here.

i've been reading a bit and it seems like they never officially stated a cause, but no matter what failed binnie, it still is on fantagio's head for not addressing his health properly. i don't know why i expected the industry as a whole to learn from gen 1 mistakes... nowadays, i see these kids running around with their newjeans and enhypens and i really, really hope to god that they'll never have to learn the hard way about all this.

i'm in another idol-adjacent/idol-like fandom by now, and it's so hard for me to look at other fans mourning their fave's life changes and not be like... they're leaving because they have a choice. they're finding love because they have a choice. how is that not a reason to celebrate? how is pursuing happiness not a lovely, valuable thing? it could be so, so much worse.

truthfully, looking back, i was the same way about idols quitting, if only because i couldn't imagine a world without them... but now that i live in that world, i realize that if i could have it any other way, i would rather they disappear from public scrutiny and know they're all right. any other option is ghastly to me.

thanks for the sympathy, anon. i hope i'll get to that place with bin too. it's such a weird position to be in, grieving someone you never really knew from all the way on the other side of the world, but i'm getting okay with it. i still can't listen to astro's music without feeling sad, and i don't think i'll be able to enjoy anything new 4stro puts out, but that's just how life is sometimes.

i hope these kids never have to learn, either. mostly for the idols' sake, but theirs too. hope you're feeling better today.
