something big going down in clown town

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

i was trying to google options but mostly people were talking about how dandruff is often mistaken for dry scalp and how which one it is determines the treatment you use

there were also a bunch of different names thrown about, but most echoed the other anon saying don't use head and shoulders

some also said talk to your doctor to get a shampoo, some said they had success using conditioner only and using shampoo every few days instead of every wash

i actually think it's a rly bold thing to admit defeat when writing... sometimes we aren't qualified to write something, and realising that is humbling (or should be).

i just wanted to say that i was scrolling with my glasses slightly smudged, read this as “air filter parts for cats” and had the cutest mental image before realizing :(

+1

just having other people look something over and make suggestions/alterations makes a huge difference in the end quality. every author i follow has given huge props to their editors for having a big hand in improving their stories and characters. and in my own fanfic, i can see the quality difference between the ideas ive workshopped with my friends versus the ones where ive just sat down and written them without external input. the collaboration does make a difference!

not to be mean, but ime a lot of oc players get lost in the powers + worldbuilding sauce and don't spend enough time focusing on their ocs history and personality. ive tagged more than one who has a cool concept and in practice it's like threading off of a very flat skyrim npc, because they spent so much time thinking about how magic works that they can't answer basic questions like if their character prefers beef or chicken.

if this sounds like you, start with a bullet point timeline history of your oc or a bullet point list of personality traits. if you struggle w/ that, then find an oc questions quiz on tumblr and answer those for your character.

only after getting a basic idea of who your character is written down is when you should expand to world info and the specifics of your character's powers. you should write down world info after because then you'll know what you need to explain for people to understand your character.

it'll go a lot easier if you do.

sa

also gonna add that you shouldn't feel like you need to stick with the history timeline you come up with, but it's important to have some idea of when things happen because ive seen a lot of ocs who are like

history: bullied for being bad at magic, masters magic at age 8 and since the player didn't do basic math they didn't realize their inept mage became grandsage at age 11 and high wizard at age 16

personality: insecure about how hard they struggle at magic, thin veneer of cockiness to hide their insecurity

get an idea of when things happen but also it's okay to fudge the details or change things

big +1 to this

i've also found character questions plurk memes that go around every so often a great tool to use for this! i just copy them into a google doc and write out the answers.

Nizerol has been my fix with my very fine hair, but it still smells, sorry

Luckily it worked with only a few washes

oh ty anon, that info really helps put things in perspective. e.g. subcontracting a laborer might incur liability in a different way from a media coordinator. Interesting!

+1 to your +1

I gank the character questions memes of all kinds from plurk, paste them into private posts in the character journal, and answer them as I can. It worked for canon characters with very little screen time so I thought, what if, and sure enough it helps OCs even more.

reactive events

(Anonymous) 2024-03-19 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
people don't like them but what exactly makes a game event reactive?

Re: reactive events

(Anonymous) 2024-03-19 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
When the event is just a bunch of stuff happening that the player characters have no affect on and all they can do is talk about and respond to it.

One example of a reactive event I have come to hate is when people will do edgy live broadcasts of their characters to the entire IC population of them murdering or torturing another character/NPC because there is nothing anyone can do but post outrage about it. The only time this has worked is if the entire game is plot driven and everyone knows a lot of player-led actions have led up to that happening, but most of the time it's just used for shock value.

Or anything where NPCs take a lot of big actions and the PCs can only respond to what's happening to them without much agency about how they got there. Everything you do in RP involves some amount of reactive stuff but the difference is on how much player choices affect that versus it constantly being stuff just happening to them.

Usually it's because the event wasn't planned out well enough to consider how people can actually play with it and participate in the plot beyond show and tell where the majority of characters only get to form an opinion about it.

Desperately seeking Susan the other half of the dyad. I'm open to playing it pretty much any way possible (other than [profile] busive, antis stay home).

If we get on well and our playing styles mesh nicely, I'll invite you into Folkmore (if you aren't already there), though my Rey there is an AU who stayed in exchange for Kylo sparing the transports in TLJ. It would be entirely up to you if you want to take the AU possibilities and run with it or play it otherwise.

"wow look at this tv broadcast of thing happening" "npc is giving a speech, no questions allowed, they leave before your characters have chance for input" "there's a trolley barreling towards this orphanage. no none of the player characters are in a position to or will be able to do anything about it, stop asking" "npc is fighting npc and fallout is happening. yeah that's it, that's the event. don't they look cool?"

(Anonymous) 2024-03-19 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
da, chiming in to +1 shampoo bars in general. they're more expensive up front, but they really do last a lot longer
Lush has a few that seem like they'd be good for a problem scalp/fine hair combo. The one called "Soak and Float" sounds like it even has the floral scent OP was looking for, going by the ingredients.

looking for some advice: i've bowed out of threading with an otherwise exceptionally friendly stranger and left things off at a short and sweet 'i'm afraid our styles don't mesh.' they're really keen to improve and have prodded me for feedback, but the deterrent is not something they can really fix or that people generally take well to being brought up. is this the rare circumstance where it's kinder to just ghost them?

(Anonymous) 2024-03-19 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
imo being prompted for feedback is a weird thing to happen on here, so if theyre reaching out at all theres a healthy chance they would have done it after being ghosted as well

why dont you feel like you can give them the feedback?

(Anonymous) 2024-03-19 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You might as well tell them and maybe just emphasize that it's not so much "wrong" as just not a thing that works for you.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-20 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
what is it?

(Anonymous) 2024-03-20 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
is it that they never do anything to move the scene forward

(Anonymous) 2024-03-20 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
pretty much this. if the characters have no agency and no ability to do anything other than react to something that's happening, that's a reactive event.
