Tell me soldier, you ever see a hang gliding accident on a public post channel?

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

What are "mod favorites" - irl/online friends, players who have what the mods think are consistently good ideas? As someone who doesn't play in games, I'm so curious as to what this means. Here's a context example from an anon comment:

even games that advertised as "character choices affect the game world" seemed to only have it happen in limited predetermined ways, or by mod favorites."

In my experience, it's people who have the boldness or familiarity to talk directly to mods about how they can affect plot, instead of hiding in a corner with friends making their own fun or waiting with social anxiety for mods to bestow plot from them on a satin pillow.

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

notionally, mod favorites are people the mods favor, as the phrase implies. this is normal human behavior and mods having favorites isn't bad. what makes a favorite can be a matter of liking the character for external reasons, being friends with the player (online or irl), or enjoying what the character does in-game.

in context, the implication is usually that the person talking about mod favorites is accusing the mods of giving their favorites special preferential treatment. this may or may not be accurate in any given case.

in your example, for instance, the anon you're quoting feels that mods allow their favorite characters to affect the game world in ways that others cannot. this may be a case of mod favorites getting special treatment, or it might be that the "favorite" simply put in the time and effort and anon is envious. it may even be the other way around: the character doesn't get to do things because they're a mod favorite, but rather, the character is a mod favorite because the things they try to do are frequently things that fit well with the mods' vision for the game.

apropos of nothing, serious question: how would someone improve their introspection in their tags?

Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

(Anonymous) 2024-01-02 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Mention any or as much of the following as possible:
  • How do they feel about their current environment? Why?
  • How do they feel about their origins? Why?
  • How do they feel about the current situation or how it contrasts with what they're used to? Why?
  • How do they feel about the characters they're interacting with? Why?
  • Generally, what makes your character tick? Why?

  • Make sure you're not just dropping a wall of exposition, drip feed that shit as appropriate. Read your tags to yourself. Does the interaction have a flow? Does it seem stilted or natural?

    Re: GENERAL DWRP QUESTIONS

    (Anonymous) 2024-01-02 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
this is going to sound condescending as hell, but it's not meant to be.

have you read a book? you know how the main characters (when anything's written especially in first person) are able to have pages and pages of introspection that fit with the scene they're doing? a little action, a little mental dialogue about remembering/justifying why they're doing this and that, some verbal dialogue, more introspection.

my one takeaway that has stuck with me and made it much easier to write a passable app has been "read a book before you write an app". whatever your favorite genre is, whatever you're into, go read a book for a bit and get into the flow of it before you sit down and write out an app. books are a different beast than rping back and forth. there's more to it. it's meatier. and it's solo, so it's a little bit of preparation for sitting down, alone, to write, alone, in an app.

this depends on your thread partner, your preferences, their preferences, and the sort of character you're playing, i think. it's difficult to give a one-size-fits-all response. speaking only for myself, what i tend to like in others' introspection are details about the character that are particular to the player's interpretation and that help me, the player, make sense of the character's behavior even if my own character is confused as shit or way off the mark. imo good introspection tags do not recapitulate details from your character's canon that are irrelevant to the scene, focus on the character's psychology, and are written in an engaging style. i also prefer it when introspection sounds different from how a character speaks. not sure if this helps, anon, but practice makes perfect. your threading partners will be the best help here if you're comfortable asking them.

For those apps that still want powers/abilities sections and don't go for wiki links, or the wikis are incomplete or inaccurate...

How deep do you go with yours? Do you provide every single detail and limit?

For example, say you're apping Ino from Naruto. She's pretty standard (outside of her mind powers and healing) for the canon. But canon is not standard human stuff.

For example, she can steal people's bodies temporarily and heal people with ninja magic. That's an obvious inclusion. Her ninja powers also let her walk on walls and floors. Okay. She can also jump really high and move really fast.

But what about the other stuff? She's slightly stronger than normal people and can lift and carry a grown adult as a young teen. She's not tougher, but she can take more damage than normal people. She can use her ninja energy to enhance her senses to superhuman levels, or enhance her physicals. Theoretically, she knows how to use ninja magic to store things inside of other, more portable things. She can transform into other things. She can probably create a copy of herself, and can definitely make illusionary versions of herself. She can send her ninja magic into ropes and wires and stuff and gain a level of control over them.

There's more, but you're getting the picture.

How many do you put down? Just the stuff that might come up in game? All of the important stuff? Do you just go "ninja magic" to cover some of it? Do you list every single ability and its limits separately, no matter that it might never come up?

When your character has about as many powers as Superman, and not all of them can be neatly summed up with "Enhanced physical abilities", how do you handle that? Is it better to leave stuff off or be extremely specific?

I have no clue if this is the right spot to ask this, but in a game if people are playing multiple characters in one game and they posted top-levels with all of them, would it be weird or annoying to tag them all with your one character? This might just be RP anxiety talking cause I'm new to DWRPing so I don't know all the dos and don'ts and this is my first time actually joining a game, so I'm really anxious about doing something wrong and annoying or upsetting people. Again this is probably just RP anxiety taking the wheel to drive all over the place and make me overthink everything.

As someone new to DWRP who's just been dipping my toe in with meme posting and the like, with the occasional psl hunting for voice-testing. How does dwrp treat initiating or taking part in smutty RP with an underage canon character? A lot of other rp communities i've been around seem to treat it as a huge taboo and you can get banned for wanting to write/rp gay smut of characters/fandoms from animanga where the characters are canonically underage, is it the same deal here? Will I be judged if I post to a smutty/horny-adjacent meme with a character that is say a junior high student in canon? Or should canonically underage characters stick to wholesome or gen stuff?

Sorry for the somewhat embarassing question.

    hi!

a game i’m looking at allows doubles for characters from different universes.

for example, himeko from honkai impact 3rd & himeko from honkai star rail

in your opinion anons, do you reach out to cast A and tell them you’re test driving different universe himeko from cast B? or do you let your character rock and play & plot with everyone as you go?

Do nonnies have any advice for apping characters who don't have a lot of backstory/details in canon? The minimum bio/personality section wordcount for a game I'm eyeing is 500 but my character's entire wiki, including their physical description, isn't even 500 words.

    Game story managing/running

    (Anonymous) 2024-01-27 09:29 am (UTC)(link)
How do you structure an overarching or long-term plot for a game?

Creating setting and NPCs is easy. To some extent, creating the idea for a plot is simple - you look at the characters goals (survival, getting home, regaining something...) and you have some antagonist (npc/force/setting) work against them. And then you give them rewards (items/areas/abilities) for accomplishing things.

    But...
    - How do you manage this with a cast of characters when you can't possibly interact with everyone?
    - How much do you let the characters shape the story?
    - How do give them sufficient information as a thread goes on, or make sure they don't do something that breaks everything?

And maybe most importantly, how do you make it feel engaging for the players?

It feels similar to GMing, except you aren't always seated at the table, which makes it hard.

Any related tips or examples accepted happily.

Games that are not 1:1 calendar

    (Anonymous) 2024-01-31 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
How do people feel about games/comms that have a slower ingame time progression? For example 1:4, where every ingame day lasts 4 ooc days. Or even 1:7, where it takes an ooc week to get through an ingame day.

I see a LOT of 1:1 games, and they always feel so rushed. And I'm pretty active - I've held an average of 8 tags/day for the past 3 years (30+ tags on very active days).

I just don't feel like I get to sink my teeth into things. Like I want to explore how my character feels abt being dropped into a new world, and WOOSH, they've been there a week, then a month. Or fallouts from events. Or whatever. Esp in games where characters don't exactly have a "day job" to soak up their time. It's hard to justify what they do with their time.

On the other hand, I suppose in slow games when character relationships progress, it might feel slow/normal ooc, but end up being real rushed in-character?

And I understand people might find it confusing to have to check a calendar or something, but assuming it's well organised and easily accessible, I think it makes everything better if you want some depth, and it also gives more room for slower players.

Thoughts? Pros/cons? What's your ideal speed? What's TOO slow?

game convention question. you've been in a jamjar game for a year or two. small scale setting, not a city full of npcs. there's a character that's been there longer than yours but you've never written with them before. nothing against them or their player, it just never happened. then you tag them for the first time. do you:

    a. make a point of mentioning that the two characters have never spoken before
    b. vaguely assume they've exchanged pleasantries or other boring handwaved cr over the long time they've been living in the same smallish jamjar to make it less weird
    c. ask ooc first either way

if you had one thread a year ago with this character, not negative but it never blossomed into regular cr for whatever reason, and then a new thread starts, same question but option a. is mentioning that they've only spoken once before
