Tell me soldier, you ever see a hang gliding accident on a public post channel?

still on the prowl and reposting because i posted on the very tail end of last post!
looking for recommendations on good a) fun/classic bollywood films and b) darker, serious, introspective indian dramas (or films) that take place in india. for the latter i'm looking for things that are really emotional and thought provoking, but lowish on actual action. psychological horror is a fave. i recently watched the railroad men and it awakened an itch i need to scratch. stuff that's a pretty accurate depiction of the culture of the state it takes place in and more focused on ordinary people as opposed to the elite (like CEOs celebs etc) is preferred! thanks!

My Name is Sam is one of my favourite Indian movies. Autistic lead, deals with how Muslims were treated in the aftermath of 9/11, cute romance.

Nix if child death, imprisonment/torture are dealbreakers. Very optimistic ending, though.

Jodha Akbar is one of my favourite movies, but it's definitely about elites/royalty, but the colours, the couple dueling with swords, the sheer beauty of the cinematography!

open world vidya

not having games to play has gotten me into bad habits, I need something new to fill my evening void. I really enjoy open world rpg-types and have played AssCreed to death, so I'm looking for games in that vein. Setting sort of doesn't matter but I'm really bad at shooting/aiming (and can't play FPS for that reason) so if the gameplay is more melee-oriented, the better.

PS4 only, that's the only console I own. bonus if it's older and likely to be on sale.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

seconding Dragon Age Inquisition
Horizon: Zero Dawn
Skyrim (always Skyrim)
Ghost of Tsushima
Red Dead Redemption 2 has shooting in it obviously, but I find the aiming system to be pretty forgiving on PS4 and the world is beautiful/fun to explore

I am like you and pretty much gravitate to games like this, I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the above and hope you find one you like!

skyrim!

also not exactly open world but with fun level design and lots of ways to get around places - dishonored/dishonored 2.

if you are willing to give a shot at some fps elements for a great open world scifi horror game, then prey (2017)

Honestly if you want to spend a couple hours after work hovering up quests I would look into the free trial of Final Fantasy 14. I would say Genshin Impact too, but I've heard bad things about the PS4 version so maybe not.

yakuza. if you can, start with yakuza 0. the game's been out for almost a decade (oof) so you can get it for cheap on the ps store. there are a lot of mini-missions like assassin's creed, and you rarely (if ever) use a gun

greedfall is an open-world action-rpg and is on sale for $11 right now without the dlc, the dlc is normally kind of expensive but also optional

melee is completely viable as a build!

Marvel's Spider-Man
Shadow of Mordor
Witcher 3 (do not bother with the first two, they suck)
Elden Ring (though it's a bit more difficult than most open world RPGs)
Saints Row
Grand Theft Auto
Shadow of the Colossus

following up the obligatory elder scrolls req: the fallout games also have a great setting with a lot of lore to dig into, and even though they're fps lite you can ignore that completely by using the automatic targeting system or playing a melee build.

oh wow thanks fam. I hadn't realized some of these are actually open world, like Ghosts of Tsushima. I'm putting almost everything on my list and hitting up those winter sales. sorry FF14 folks that's a hard no.

I may sound ridiculous, but here goes.

Does anyone have a rec for a canon (book, manga, movie, reasonably accessible series, etc) that has a similar central premise to Miraculous Ladybug but isn't quite so kiddy? I'm a sucker for secret identity-related shenanigans and love "triangles" (or more-angles) that really boil down to the principals being kind of dumb about it, but ML is much too much of a children's cartoon tone- and style-wise for me to really get into it.

(As a sidenote, I'm sure there's American superhero comics somewhere that have done this plot, probably multiple times, but god help me if I can figure out how or where to find that kind of arc.)

Hi anons!

I'm looking for something with magic duels! I'm especially interested in visual mediums, manga/comics, but anything is fine.

I'm looking to avoid things which make magic similar to martial arts, like Fairy Tail and Black Clover as examples off the top of my head.

are u looking more for stories where it's specifically magical person versus magical person or where the emphasis is on using magic to resolve conflicts and problems (not necessarily using magic to fight)

Also avoiding the ones where it's mainly beam spamming...

Quite a few Doctor Strange comics feature magical duels.

Slayers had a few.

Maybe check https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WizardDuel ?

Loveless was pretty interesting in its depiction of spell battles from what I remember but I think it's hiatused/hanging there because the author got distracted by Akuma no Riddle way back when.

Less serious answer: have you seen some of those sports or gaming animanga, they're pretty magical with character powers

Owl House has its share of magic duels, including two in particular that are exceptionally well-animated.

The Fate series has a lot of wizard vs wizard showdowns. Unlimited Blade Works (the 2014 anime, not the movie) is probably your best bet for it, and it's self-contained enough that you can ignore the rest of the series.

Card Captor Sakura doesn't have as much wizard vs wizard scenes in it, but it's about a girl using magic to catch monsters (and occasionally fight wizards).

the disney sword in the stone movie has an iconic one imo

(Anonymous) 2024-01-21 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
frieren does have some of these! it'll be covered in the series' second cour if you want to go anime-only, but if you want to read the manga to see its depiction of magical battles, there's that.

magical girl lyrical nanoha would also be another rec of mine that has extremely solid magic battles as well. highly rec both the original and sequel series (a's) for this; strikers leans a bit into more martial arts-esque magic with their protagonist, unfortunately.

not necessarily magic entirely, but a certain scientific railgun/a certain magical index also have some pretty solid ability fights that i've enjoyed, too.

and from this season, sasaki and peeps seems to be promising on this particular front? its focus isn't entirely on fighting but there have been fights in two of the three episodes that have come out so far and definitely have looked very nice and well thought out and there's definitely both magic and like, some strategy as well which i've liked.

pretty sammy/magical project s is another magical girl series with two magical girls duking it out. it's pretty old and ridiculous but solid. the spinoff that spawned from this, sasami: magical girl's club is also good for magical fights, but that mostly picks up in like, the second half of the show iirc. it's been a hot second.

Looking for the kinds of video games to waste weeks of my life on exploring and discovering things and farming cheap dopamine. Think Skyrim, Stardew Valley, BotW/TotK, Hades, etc. I have a Switch and a basic PC.
