Rundown:

rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.

I brought this up shortly before the new post, thought I'd repost.

I'm gauging interest in a sandbox comm. It doesn't seem to be a thing we have anymore. Nothing elaborate, just a place to put up a post as a starter or open posts with settings. Probably a weekly/monthly event post. A tag system for 'verses. Simple stuff. To make life easier for everyone, pre-ban anyone already banned from bakerstreet/fortanon.

I'm not sure if memes have entirely superseded this kind of play or if other people are craving it the way I am.

Thanks for the positive reactions anons- enough for me to bite the bullet. I'll get things in a workable state shortly.

I've got a main comm and an OOC comm (for meet-and-greets and memes). Amongst the usual stuff like rules/info pages, I was thinking I'd put together a 'verse directory where players can put little infodumps of the settings they've put together, as well as the appropriate tags to use for them. Optional, naturally. If anyone has questions in the meantime, feel free to ask them here or PM this journal.

The opening event post will probably be a jamjar environment which people can treat as a 'default' setting, because anything can happen in a jamjar. But everyone will be free to put up their own posts immediately.

i have been doing solely games for years and only recently started doing memes. what is the difference between a game and a sandbox, no apps?

Probably the best way to think of it would be like somewhere between games and memes.

No apps, and with a format closer to a game where you make your own posts about your character, instead of topleveling to a theme like a meme does. But like memes, the setting is not pre-defined. Where and what is going on is based on the post, not the community, and you can do whatever you please. You can also do open posts, like game events, where you present a setting and players take part in it.

Usually, they end up with different 'verses' (short for universes) which represent an AU/line of continuity/shared setting, you can think of them like mini-games without apps. For example, if you wanted to do a post where your character was fighting the evil empire of a sci-fi world and another post where they are living peacefully in a medieval village. If you enjoy the CR and setting, you can come up with a verse name, get a tag for the community, and nurture your own little shared continuity.

it seems like the idea you have in mind here is kind of like an old school dressingroom. i was thinking of putting one of those together myself recently, so excited to see someone else with the same idea.

In that case, you might want to edit some terminology (on the profile page: sandbox environment -> dressing room) so it's clearer. I think it's great you made it, though - having a foreign setting without the commitment of a game's activity check is a nice way to shove characters out of their comfort zones.

Yeah, I’m redrafting it a bit. Since we don't have either around at the minute, I think I'll get away with it. And I intend to put up some more dressing room style posts of my characters in scenes I want to play shortly- I know no one wants to be the first!

I feel like the Shadow House has an amazing concept for a memloss limited cast game.

For the unfamiliar - it's about a vast and isolated estate where people that seem to be made entirely of featureless shadow live while their Living Dolls take care of them and strives to act as their "Face" for expressing emotions and aesthetics and the two are supposed to get to a point of synching perfectly with each other but as the series goes on, clearly everything is not as it seems...

The issue is mainly I see the set up being the PCs being the Living Dolls, but no mod no matter how small a game is going to run all their respective Shadows without burning out or end up with some people slipping through the cracks. Having them both be PCs is an issue as Shadows and Dolls are meant to be paired in the event someone drops, or someone apps an obscure character that isn't likely to have someone else willing to play their counterpart. Letting the players play their characters' Shadow is probably the best solution here...

Trying to think of other possible pitfalls with this concept.

there was a jamjar game that failed to get off the ground a few years back based around bubblegum crisis and powersuits? idk if anyone else would be into something like that or even running it but it was the last thing i remember being really pumped about
