Is it me or is roleplay slowing down as a hobby as a whole? I've roleplayed for more than two decades now and it's never been like this - people will only reply maybe twice a week to anything at most and people who say they're active and want to boomerang spend time on every hobby but roleplaying. What's the point of starting something big and getting involved in active storylines if characters are barely present?

I'm not talking about lapses in time here and there due to hobbies, or real life taking precedent, just that this seems to be the normal pace of RP now.

it might just be the kinds of threads you're encountering, anon. i've been in rp in some form for nearly as long as you have and it doesn't seem to have changed much for me. the only difference is that people are working more around their jobs and families than their school schedules.

looking back on some of my really ancient threads on livejournal they were moving at about the same pace as the ones i get now. maybe you're noticing it more because now we have things like plurk where you can get a live feed of what everyone's doing?

most people still active here have been active for 10+ years. people are losing interest as they enter their 30s and 40s, or have been at it for so long that they've burned out and can't get the creative juices flowing like they could when they were twenty.

Rp doesn't pay the bills, of which I now have many. I rp when I have the juice, sometimes that means only having energy for a couple rounds of tags two or three times a week. I also have other creative hobbies that double as a side hustle, so the things that help me pay those bills take priority

Anons, how many of you have a job where you need to write a lot? For example a job that requires you to write reports or blog posts or something for research purposes?

Do you think it helps in your roleplaying or vice versa, you find it easy to do that kind of job because you roleplayed even before getting that job? If you are willing to share more about your work, that would be interesting to hear.

Asking just out of curiosity. I don't have a job like that.

it's made me an exceptionally reliable thread partner, because i approach writing very practically and can perform it through malaise, stress or burnout. come what may, you are getting that tag, and with rapid turnaround.

on the flip side, it's also skyrocketed the standard to which i hold myself, and there is a nagging but honest sense of 'it's (not) just rp.' my typos, repetitions and pedestrian turns of phrases do matter. i never inflict anywhere close to that level of scrutiny on anyone else, but i can't switch it off for my own output.

quick advice, please: if a thread started as gen but a player wants to take it in a smutty direction, is it up to them to OOCly say they'd like to shift gears toward that, or is it down to the other player to PM first if they get the vibe it's heading that way and they are not up for it?

for context, i've been rping half of an otp with a perfect stranger on a gen meme with no shippy or sex prompts. now that the characters have completed the action part of the thread, the other player has shifted the setting to something much more intimate. it wouldn't be ooc for this otp to have sex and their chemistry has been good in this thread so far. however, i'm not up for smutting, which i failed to disclose when we began threading, not thinking there would be a reason for it to pop up. would it be presumptuous of me to check in OOCly with the other player to see if our expectations align? or should i wait for them to PM first, since they're the one doing a 180 change on the genre of the scene?

genuinely just curious what you think the protocol is and not interested in shaming this person or going down the rabbit hole of why i'd rather ftb. i'd rather communicate than do something PA like drop the thread or have my character develop a migraine. thank you!

I would message them and disclose it and also put on your journal a note that you only prefer FTB so this isn't going to happen in the future. Not every single person wants to smut with their OTP but some people really do, so it's possible they expected it to head that way, so keep in mind they could be disappointed. Or they could not care at all. You should mention something if you can sense it because I think it would be fairly normal for an OTP to set up a more intimate thing after a first thread goes well.

Has anyone ever made an assassins vs targets meme? It could be pretty fun and have lots of angles for prompts: action/adventure, crime, horror, fantasy or sci-if settings, comedy, and even shipping if you wanna go with a forbidden love spin.

haven't seen anything like it, but it sounds fun. closest thing in theme i can think of is the monthly fight meme, but i can see this variation attracting the bodyguard shipping crowd as well, so it might get a little more play than either of those.

I used to write a crosscanon psl where my character was the live-in pet of another and I'm still disappointed I lost touch with it. I really enjoyed the dynamic, even if I did hope that it was our own oc psl we could've branched from.

essek would vibe well with extremely smart goal-oriented characters, but he's also proven weak to just being barraged with genuine kindness from ridiculous people.

mollymauk you could probably manage with anyone that's not an overt asshole, he's a people person. try a character who's down to party if you want an easy excuse for a good time.

Is it rude to ignore replies to your top-level if you're not particularly interested in the character/feel your character wouldn't be physically attracted to them (in the case of sex scenes)? Should I be asking if the person has other characters or just leave it be?

personally i'd much rather someone just ignore the tag if they're not feeling it because the alternative is being left to carry the full weight of a go-nowhere thread of compulsory replies with zero substance. i'd rather be ignored than handed a chore.

maybe this sounds like a humblebrag but i promise it's not, i just had a realization

i think i may have been an unknowing beneficiary of mod favoritism. this is old shit, back in the lj days, but i was shooting the shit the other day with an irl friend who was also in the ljrp scene, and she made some passing comment about me being the mods' baby. and i thought about it and like. i guess i was? i had multiple close cr connections with one of the mods, and so whenever i got a cool idea id take it to her for mod approval because she and i were talking anyway, and she never shot me down about any of them. at the time i just figured, okay, none of my ideas are so gamebreaking she has to say no, but in hindsight im recognizing that a lot of my requests were along the lines of, i know the rules say X, but wouldn't it be cool if not-X happened in this fairly small-scale fun way? this was for stuff like canon puncturing (with my char as the puncture-ee, not puncturer), getting to keep an event item long term even when the event writeup said that the items disappeared at the end of an event, my character getting a new power from an event because the theme of the event dovetailed with the character.... stuff like that.

obviously now it's over a decade later and that water is so far under the bridge it's on the other side of the planet, but if id recognized at the time that i was basically getting a ton of rules bent if not broken for me, what (if anything) should i have done about it? just stop asking? make a point of telling other players they could also ask for rule exceptions? ask the mod if other people got the same kind of permissions i did?
