advice for getting character's voice to stick? having a lot of trouble lately and reading their dialogue over hasn't been helping like how it usually does

honestly the best advice anyone has ever given me about rp/voices is that the second a character is removed from the canon environment, they become "your" character, i.e. they are already changed from their canon selves. so some flexibility is necessary to play a character well. whenever i get insecure about a character voice i always think about that and it relieves my new voice jitters.

other than that, dialogue isn't the only thing that goes into a voice. noting body/physical language and inputting that into your tags goes a long way. are they a fidgeter? is their body language aggressive or defensive, do they cross their arms and turn away to intimidate, or do they lean into personal bubbles? lot of characters say a lot without saying anything at all.

For me the easiest way I get a character is understanding why they act the way they do, and not focus on actual voice. I actually completely ignore their voice first and focus on their reasons (why do they dislike someone? why do they get angry? why do they do fake smiles? what caused them to act like this?), because once I get what makes them tick, it becomes easier to know when they react a certain way. I don't focus on how they speak until later when I just need to clean up the dialogue with their speech patterns or verbal tics.

I'm almost done with the first campaign. I interpret people and characters intuitively, so any advice you'd be willing to give regarding Vax and/or Pike as a character in general and how he/she grows over the course of the campaign would help me absorb my gut feelings in a concrete way. I'd be very grateful for your help. Thank you!

hi friend! sorry for not seeing this sooner.

i have more experience with pike as i play her more often, but here goes:

pike is team mom. she starts off as that cool mom who wants to do everything with her friends and sometimes gets a bit carried away. insert her atoning with sarenrae and going on small quests on her own to help with that. when she does come back though, she's still hip to hang out with everyone, but now she's got her head on a little more straighter. she's there to hype the team up and let them have fun, but also ground them. she's their heart. there's a line that i always remember where vex goes to pike "you don't always have to have a brave face" and pike goes "yeah, i do." and that really resonates deep with me when i play pike. she's there to have fun, but she's also there to make sure you make good choices and save you if you mess yourself up. she's like the sun: she brings light and warmth, but she can also burn.

vax is a little more deeper. up until the chroma conclave he was a bit brash, dove into situations willy nilly. there's one point before everything that he's like "what's our purpose" and then the attack on emon. and then of course vex dying. becoming the champion of the raven queen really changes him - for better and worse. he doesn't really accept it until the fight with umbrasyl when he finally admits he's her champion. from then on he starts becoming a bit more serious, a bit more steadfast in trying to keep his friends safe and saving the world. helping keyleth with her journey. wanting to spend his life with her. and then living on borrowed time after his first death. that's the point, where he makes the deal to stop vecna. he knows his time is short, but he wants to spend as much time as he can with his family.

Apparently there's a webcomic as well? How important is it for characterization?

its been literal years since ive read the comic, but from what i remember they're honestly fairly different. his last name name gets changed also (IIRC its blackheart in the comic)

i extremely recommend it, but as far as rp characterization is concerned you're not missing anything by not reading it.

A character I want to play is Muslim. I am not, and am concerned about writing him inaccurately or saying something that is totally incorrect in regards to Islam. I know his religion isn't going to come up in most contexts, but I still want to be informed so I don't say something that's flat-out wrong. People who have played characters outside your religion, what did you do to avoid those kind of snafus? Also, if anyone has any resources they think would be especially good for educating myself outside of just what Google pulls up at a cursory glance, let me know. I know I wouldn't get the DWRP equivalent of canceled for messing up but I want to be respectful.

What character? You need to give lots of context to get good answers.

If his religion isn’t likely to come up much, he can’t be especially devout, so a lot of your resources may not be very accurate to his understanding of it.

For finding things out: believe it or not the "[Thing] For Dummies" & "Complete Idiot's Guide To [X]" series are actually pretty decent for most things, though since every book has different writers ymmv, but I'm pretty sure every major world religion has a book on it from each series to give you some solid basics.

Additionally, you're definitely not the first person to run into "Help, I want to write a character who is a different religion than I am but I don't want to be a dick about it!" - Reddit is Going Through It right now but if you can find communities specifically dedicated to places where writers can ask questions in general there might be something (there used to be a comm on LJ just for this, I know someone was trying to get a DW one off the ground but idk how successful that was).


Overall though - while HMDs are basically never used anymore, for me I'd make sure to still have one prominently displayed on my journal for the character with both anonymous and comment screening on with a note that I was doing my best to be respectful regarding their religion but to please let me know if I have made any errors. While there are always exceptions, most people do understand mistakes are a matter of ignorance rather than maliciousness and the good thing about DWRP is you can be easily accessible for that mistake to be corrected (unlike a book which might get all the way to being published and having millions of copies printed by the time it gets caught...)

i have pretty exclusively played one character for ages and stupid as it sounds i'm not really sure how to pick another to try playing

how do you guys decide what characters you want to play? please don't laugh i know this is a ridiculous question :(

usually I think about what kind of scenarios and CR I feel like writing threads for, and then pick (or sometimes design) a character to play based on that. for example, do you feel like writing... high school slice of life, hurt/comfort in a military setting, a robot learning how to human, a young hero getting his bearings, an old veteran hero becoming disillusioned, a powerful being brought low, a powerless person brought high... etc. etc.

what actually helped me back in the day was wanting to join a cast where the character i wanted to play was taken, but my second favorite character wasn't. picking up my second favorite helped me relax a little and get out of my comfort zone, especially since my rp partners were pretty chill and forgiving about any unfamiliar bumps or bad writing on the way. my love for my first choice characters never died, and i often found interesting, new perspectives about my second faves that i probably would have never been able to appreciate without playing them.

since then, i think i've always unconsciously made a habit to play at least two or three characters per canon! if nothing else, it gives me a lot of perspective on how others play my characters and how i'd like my portrayal to compare/contrast with theirs.

tbh i can say i've never "picked" a character to play, it's always been a case of me consuming a piece of media and just vibing with a particular character to the point where i go "i want to rp this guy." i think this is probably why when i get a muse for a character, the voice pretty much lasts forever and i can pick them back up again at any point in time with just a little bit of canon review.

One thing I've noticed is that, I'll be playing along with someone else, and then get super excited about the idea of CR with a different character, or a different canon. That's usually an indication that I'm into that canon or character and should give them a try myself.

Has anyone piqued your interest like that recently? Might be worth giving them a shot!

I usually vibe and like, imagine various scenarios for the character I end up liking. Like if I find myself talking and seeking fanworks about them, that's a good sign I'm potentially interested in playing them.

Of course, being interested in them as a character and being interested in RPing them are different things. You only really find out which is which once you try RPing them with others.

A character I'm thinking of playing owns a retail clothing chain and, as a result, owns sweatshops. He knows he owns sweatshops. He has, as a character, defended it in-universe to his investors. How do I play that without it coming across as either offensively making light of a real-world problem or as over-emphasizing something for social justice brownie points? It's not the single most important thing to know about him, but I can't really omit it without lying, to some degree, about the kind of character I'm playing. And that's just bad RPing.

i'd make a note of it in whatever character info writeup you've got and then not worry too hard about it otherwise. something that explains an aspect of the character's personality, like 'Jingles McTurtleneck is the owner of the McTurtleneck Company. He've very concerned about revenue and supporting his family, and focuses on profit over any ethical concerns about production or labor.'

if your character is otherwise pretty conscientious when it comes to this kind of stuff, you might say something like "Jingles McTurtleneck can come off as [ various good traits etc.etc. ] but has a real blind spot when it comes to his own business, revenue, and profitability."

dwrp is usually pretty good about separating ic / ooc and i doubt people are going to think you simp for shein or whatever just because your character does.

i'm thinking of apping a character who's celibate by choice to a sex game. he's not shown to really feel attraction toward anyone in canon and would definitely hold out for a while before 'succumbing' to doing anything remotely sexy. i've never played in a sex game before. do you think that's something i should warn for? any pitfalls i should avoid?

Don't do the thing where you brag about how your character is "Hard Mode" while obviously wanting them to have sex as player, because that puts the onus entirely on other players to figure out how to make it happen. Even if your character doesn't want something ICly you can still meet other players halfway when plotting OOC.

A character I want to play is Choctaw, and I am not. I've ordered some books by Choctaw authors to learn more about modern life on the reservations and in the urban communities Choctaw people have relocated to, and I've taken a Native American Studies class, but I'm not sure if I'm sufficiently researching this. I want to write accurately and not just go off of my preconceived notions of Native peoples. Does anyone have any other ideas on what I could do to learn more? I'm not here to half-ass any of my writing, even in what I acknowledge is basically internet barbies.
