rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. obviously i want them in the game, i like them, hence why i said i am on friendly terms with them. i just don't want to interact with a character that annoys me and it's someone for whom optouts wouldn't be super common

i wander back and forth between my computer room and living room alternating watching tv to doing tags, i'm an absolute gremlin about it do them out of order, sometimes just tagging as one character for a whole day, boomeranging some things and letting others sit and fester for days.

like others said, you don't need to give the commentary. just say "i'd rather not play with that specific character but i'd love to thread with your other ones!"

if they push for a reason, then you can gently say "i don't want to shit on something you like but i just personally really dislike the character, i hope you have fun with them but i'd rather play with other characters". any sane person will accept that and appreciate your honesty, and if they don't take it well than that's a red flag.

One easy cheat I've used when it comes time to discuss something technical?

[Character says something extremely technical that relies a lot on an in-depth knowledge of physics/engineering/quantum theory/biochemistry to understand fully, but in essence means that they can achieve Goal A by using Method C.]

Doesn't this mean the player needs to have the same in-depth knowledge of the specialised field to identify Method C at all

honest answer: opting out for this reason isn't usually done here and is probably going to hurt your friend's feelings. we generally reserve opt-outs for cases of squicks or conflict with the person oocly, and i've never seen anyone go for a full opt-out simply because they dislike the character or canon.

instead of a full opt-out, you could just say you're not sure if they'll click CR-wise, or just see if you like the CR even if you dislike the character and if you don't, you can drop it.

i have absolutely seen opt outs in cases of having problems with the character and/or canon. it's one of the reasons opt outs are there for. if i play a rapist type character or come from a canon that has a lot of very triggering content in it, i would blanket put up an opt out post and be very okay with anyone in memes or games asking me not to tag them. they don't even have to go into detail on it. it's called self awareness.

that said, maybe someone just really dislikes an actor or that character/canon is a sensitive topic for them, so opting out entirely should not be an issue. and with most people, it wouldn't be. in this instance, there shouldn't be an issue with an adult player pinging someone or tagging a permissions/opt out page and just stating that they're opting out of this cr/character. i'd side eye someone not being willing to go along with that more than 'i don't want this cr at all so please don't tag me'. at least one half of this party is using their words.

Not really. Method C could be anything from treating Problem A with a nameless chemical they've mixed up in a vial to exposing it to a specific gadget they've built that works by SCIENCE to knowing that standing still means you can't be seen by the ProblemAsaurus Rex. You could just as easily say that the portal over there can be closed if they get to the controls and reverse the polarity of the neutron flow.

Doesn't matter how it works, just that it does for the sake of the plot and it feels smart for the sake of characterization.

everything you mentioned falls into the squick/trigger category, anon. yes, those are all generally accepted reasons why someone would opt-out of playing with a character.

op is asking about a situation where they find a particular character annoying. people don't generally opt out just because of that. it'd be closer to opting out of every star wars character because you find star wars hype obnoxious than opting out of a rapist character because you're uncomfortable with the subject matter. most people would side-eye the former and understand the latter.

what the other anon said. you don't need to give a reason. trauma or trigger or just 'i don't like their face' would be enough. you shouldn't have to give a dissertation on your discomfort or get some kind of rubber stamp to have it approved as 'reason enough'. They're opting out. that's it.

you don't need to give a reason, but op is asking how to go about it without making it awkward.

if someone apps to a game their friend is at with a pretty tame character (op said it wasn't a character type people usually opt out of, which I assume means there's very little in the way of potentially triggering content) and friend gives a complete opt-out request, they're gonna know one way or another that friend just hates their blorbo, which was what op wanted to avoid.

but unfortunately, if they really can't stand the possibility of being tagged by the annoying character, there's no non-awkward way to opt out if it's their friend playing them.

So, I'm coming at this conversation as someone who had a friend opt out of one of my characters a few months back because our interpretations of the character were incompatible.

You know what happened between us? Nothing. We discussed it like adults, and they still play with my other characters. If you're willing to set your ego aside and not be anxious that every disagreement means the other person hates you, it's not that big a deal.
