we're all cringe here

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

a song of achilles (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13623848-the-song-of-achilles) and the captive prince (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9305362-captive-prince) trilogy are my favorite books, and i'll forever recommend them to people.

if you want something with a YA, percy jackson kinda feel, aru shah and the end of time (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/36222611-aru-shah-and-the-end-of-time) was a fun and interesting read.

I read FFA's books thread, mostly. And also look at my city's library top picks.

+1 to ffa's book thread. If you didn't know, ffa stands for [community profile] fail_fandomanon. Also, I personally recommend finding a reviewer whose taste and takes you enjoy and checking out books they like that sound up your alley. I enjoy https://jamesdavisnicoll.com/ personally. Not every book he likes is a win for me, but it's exposed me to a lot of different books I never would have run across on my own, both old and new.

niche reddit subs tbh. /r/truelit for high lit, /r/printSF for scifi, /r/horrorlit for horror, /r/weirdlit for a mixture of all those things + you can easily find bookstagrammers who have your exact taste no matter how "under the iceberg" it is. if you're into adult/ya fantasy romance there are super aesthetic 'monthly book box subscription' brands like fairy loot, illumicrate, litjoycrate, etc. on ig as well.

R/HistoricalRomance and r/RomanceBooks also good

Fortunately, I work at a library so we get access to the Library Journal magazine. I mostly read nonfiction so I'll look at that and NPR to decide what to read next (my kingdom for a nonfiction based youtuber)

Another +1 to FFA's books thread and scouring the ten billion book box lists if you're into fantasy, YA, whatever's popular on booktok, the sort of books that unironically use 'dark academia' in their description, etc. If you're into non genre fiction, Book of the Month club is a good one to look through because they'll have a few genres in their selection process. Book clubs are always a good pick: Reese Witherspoon's book club and Read With Jenna tend to pick the big buzzy books.

As for my favorite books to read, yeah, it's nonfiction. The last one I read was 'The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder' by David Grann, who's quickly becoming my favorite nonfiction author around. I've just started 'This is Your Mind on Plants' by Michael Pollan which also looks pretty good.

da and I never knew Reese Witherspoon had a book club.

I wanted to expand my horizons so I'll look into your nonfiction recs!

Honestly, out of all the big name conventional pick celebrity book clubs out there, I like Reese's the best because it feels like she has a deliberate focus on picking nonwhite or nonAmerican authors. There are some really conventional choices, but every now and then she'll suggest an author that surprises me. (And since we're talking about it, here's a link to her website: https://reesesbookclub.com/)

If you want more nonfiction recs, I'd suggest Mary Roach or Sarah Vowell. Both have a fun style where it's half 'let's examine this event or topic' and half 'I am trying this topic or going to the place where the event happened, here are my thoughts on it. They're informative, but not super meaty. I'd recommend 'Stiff' for Roach and 'Assassination Vacation' for Vowell.

I went through a 'people having bad times on boats' phase and recommend Nathaniel Philbrick ('In the Heart of the Sea') or Julian Sancton ('Madhouse at the End of the Earth') if you want more of that sort. Hallie Rubenhold ('The Five') and Adam Higganbotham ('Midnight in Chernobyl') are two more who I've read recently and loved.

most recs come from friends or kindle's suggested reads

i like weird horror, especially if it's both gross and humorous. john dies at the end, tales from the gas station, that style of thing. i'm about halfway through song of achilles right now and i'm loving it...i'm not looking forward to the greek of it all in the end though lmao

For spec fic, Hugo and Nebula award winners. Also I find 'nerds of a feather' blog reviews quite reliable but sometimes spoilery.
