we're all cringe here

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

In a game, 9/10 the people who do this are flakes, so I'd avoid getting cr with them in the future.

full disclosure i don't do purely digital/traditional art, the art i make and sell is closer to like... woodworking or resin casting or fibercraft.

i have an etsy, my own shop site, and a patreon. twitter is my primary social media site with instagram + tumblr as my sort of backups!

i'm entirely self taught - learned from youtube and books!

full disclosure i don't do purely digital/traditional art, most of the art i make and sell is closer to like... woodworking or resin casting or fibercraft. that said, i DO make digital and traditional art and occasionally sell that too in addition to my artistic craft.

programs: i use procreate and adobe photoshop CS2, which was free for a while before adobe changed to... whatever horrid subscription thing they're going for now. procreate is great and well worth the cost of an ipad (used) and apple pencil (get this new) and the program itself ($10). photoshop is what i use to tweak and do any final polish on my art before i send it off to be printed or turned into merch.

traditional art: i work primarily with watercolor and ink (calligraphy + fountain pen).

thanks for the info! i'm really impressed.

i'd also like to vouch for procreate. it's amazing. i think it's really going to help me on my art journey

full disclosure i don't do purely digital/traditional art, the art i primarily make and sell is closer to like... woodworking or resin casting or fibercraft. i do sell some digital/traditional art too, but it's not my primary focus.

in terms of starting making art in general, i was lucky to be artistically inclined/have parents who encouraged my artsy pursuits as a child. so i do wanna say that i had a good foundation for pursuing artsy things, even if my 'education' was never more than art classes in high school + community college level photoshop. everything else since then has been self taught, mostly through youtube and just plain experimentation.

as a hobby you can and should experiment to see what kind of art makes you happiest! it can be as easy as buying a sketchbook and pencil, working your way through a 'how to draw manga-style' book or doodling your blorbos repeatedly until they look just right. but if you've got some money to spend, i think classes (in person or online) can help for the structure and to kind of ease your brain over the initial hurtle of 'aaaah a new skill aaaa.'

various art mediums, especially digital vs traditional mediums, can feel SOOOO different, so don't feel too put off if you try one and it's just not for you - I love watercolor, but am not a huge fan of acrylic paints, for example. i thought i would really like pottery, but so far it is just okay. don't feel bad if what you make at first doesn't match up to what you have in your head, experimenting and learning what kind of art is for you is part of the joy of it!

if you're looking to break into digital art, you can guy drawing tablets for not toooo expensive i think. i do all my drawing on procreate with an old ipad pro + apple pencil, which is not cheap but i really like procreate as an art program so there's that.

full disclosure i don't do purely digital/traditional art, the art i make and sell is closer to like... woodworking or resin casting or fibercraft, but i do take commissions and have repeat customers, and i'm friends with a lot of digital artists who do take/make a significant chunk of living off their commissions

i opened up shop and sold my work a while before i ever took on commissions, but not all artists (esp digital artists) have to do that. here are my personal opinions for how to git gud at getting a steady stream of commissions + make it worth your while:

- work to get your art or craft, whatever it is, to a certain level where people are willing to pay money for it. this is a wholly subjective measure obvs, and it also depends in the kind of art you produce. since you mentioned nsfw stuff, i assume you're maybe interested in drawing people's OCs. focus on learning anatomy and dynamic posing, different body types, hair, skin tones, and for nsfw learn to draw bodies in a way that look appealing or sexy to you. figure studies are really important.

- make sure you can handle doing art as work and producing it on demand, and that you can be semi-decent at handling customer service and communication. as soon as money exchanges hands, what you're doing is business and the art become a job and the commissioner is your customer. for some people, that absolutely kills their creative drive, or they find that the 'admin' side of being a commission based artist is frustrating or anxiety provoking (responding to a customer who wants changes, for example, or isn't happy with the direction the commission is going.)

- on that note, reliability and consistency and communication are probably the Most Important traits for a commission-based artist to build clientele. as much as or more than your actual art skills. i know a full time furry artist whose art is solidly average but he's got commissions coming out the ears and charges a couple hundred a pop - he always meets his deadlines, sends sketches when he says he will, lays out clearly what he can/can't do, and he's super enthusiastic about people's characters and bringing them to life.

- NSFW stuff - my understanding is that NSFW artists can often charge a premium for their work, esp if they're good at drawing multiple characters in NSFW situations. that said, think hard about whether you want to have a divide between your NSFW offerings and SFW offers, and how much of a divide you might need/want between your NSFW artist side and your RL. for example, if you're a primary school teacher, it probably makes a lot of sense to have a Lot of walls between anything related to your RL and whatever NSFW art you might offer.

- have some terms of service set up for what people can/can't do with your art. no commercial use, NFTs, AI training, etc. other digital artists are good resources for that.

people will notice. i had someone in my cast do this. was glad when they finally dropped. kinda a bummer they stuck around for so long despite only doing the bare minimum and phoning their tags in. you being there for the sake of being there but not enjoying the game/cr will likely end up making other people have neg opinions about you and avoid you like the plague in the future. just drop nonny. you'll feel better for it too.

I must be in the minority, since I am burnt out on horror and I'd prefer some dark fantasy instead. Horror runs too close to how reality leans these days and I don't need that in my pretendy fun times.

did you have to stay in one room the whole time? were you locked in? did the room at least have a bathroom? were you allowed to have anything of yours from home or talk to family members/friends?

i play one character where we're shown in canon that even over 100 years after the other character's (pre-canon) death, he's still loyal to them.

in a case like that, yeah, shipping them would be ooc.
