Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

No it’s because of what the anon above this one said. I’m not writing prompts into the void.

this is a self-fulfilling prophecy. it's only a void because everyone is convinced no one will tag out, and no one will tag out because no one wants to write prompts without knowing if the other player will respond or if they'll flake out in a tag or two or if they'll be a shitty player they wished they never tagged at all. if you put prompts out there from the start, people are more likely to tag because A) the hard part of setting the scene is already done for them, B) they can see you put some effort in so you already look more reliable than the people just musedumping, and C) they can judge from your starter how IC you seem and how good your writing is and if your styles might mesh, so it's not just a shot in the dark of "i hope i'm not writig this long narrative-heavy starter for someone that turns out to be super ecats"

That's great if that's what worked for you. But like some other anon said, I tailor my tags to each character. A one size fits all prompt is near impossible for a meme unless you're specifically looking for one thing. I don't want to limit myself or make other people think it's the only prompt I'm interested in. (and in my experience few people use wildcards for strangers, especially crosscanon cr)

There's just no easy way to win.

I'll top level with a super brief description so that anyone who wants to tag me can. I also offer to start. Otherwise I tag out and tailor my prompts to them. I personally think top leveling with a starter every time is a super easy way to burn out on memes. Great idea in theory. Not so great in execution.

I do agree people need to just tag out though. That's how I maintained a full inbox. It's not the wasteland everyone says. You just have to throw more feelers out than you would in a proper game and not be discouraged when a large percentage of them fall through.

write multiple options for starters, leave a wildcard option for anyone that wants to toss their own starter at you instead, and leave an OOC note that people can PM you to hash out ideas if they'd like a unique starter instead. all problems solved without wasting time and energy blindly throwing feelings out at people who might be wildly OOC or terrible writers or just not interested in playing with your characters

that's still limiting my prompts though. I literally mean I'll play anything from say a vampire meme. And I already covered why wildcards don't usually work. They're essentially the same as having a blank top level. And the OOC note is the same as my leaving a brief description and preferences.

I find people are more likely to come to me when I've made the leg work of reaching out to others first and having a vague presence in bakerstreet. I honestly don't think tagging out is 'wasting time and energy' nor am I worried about people being potentially ooc or terrible writers. If they are I move on. That's how meme works. If they're not interested, they won't reply.

It's just what has worked for me in BS thus far. I prefer writing prompts when I know who I'm playing with.

Write prompts in your top levels if that works for you though. And I'm not being sarcastic. You'll stand out in the sea of blanks for one thing.

+1 all this

tagging out doesn't feel like a waste of time to me; writing blind starters, with no idea who i'm writing them for or what setting/context they would even enjoy, would. there's a reason it's hard to write app samples without a prompt or a writing partner to bounce off. when you're tagging out, at least you know icly who you're writing for, and oocly might be able to look up a list of preferences in their journal, all of which can give more inspiration

this is only partially true. I don't tag out not because I don't want to write prompts but because there's almost no characters that interest me.

bakerstreet is mostly LAs and i hate playing against them. 90% of the time they're weirdly against rule of cool/rule of fun and insist on all boring gritty realism all the time.
