This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. i just realized i screwed up a basic but very important lore detail about my character in a tag, and i can't fix it because my rp partner already tagged me back. it's not the end of the world (if it was a problem my rp partner wouldn't have tagged me) but i'm still annoyed at myself. what's burning your biscuits, anons?

I always triple check every little detail even if I already know them because I'm so scared to mess anything up.

This is why my tags take way longer than they should. Sorry to my RP partners about that.

saw a game advertised that looked really interesting and like it might be a good fit for a crau i've been looking to put into play again, but the rules state that the crau can't have been out of their canon for more than three years. mine's been gone for four.

I want to play more characters but I cannot because I do too much with my current set.

I feel you on that, anon. But most of my rp partners I approach to sheepishly ask to handwave that mistake away have been pretty cool about it. Still embarrassing af though.

was it something your character said, op, or in the details?

you could always have your character say they misspoke/misremembered. or put [ooc: oh shit, i fucked up x detail, my bad] in your reply.

a castmate reserved at my game and while aren't on That X levels of turnoff they're just. not very good at the character.

a look at the draft app on their journal reveals several basic writing and grammatical problems, plus they think the fan wiki isn't sufficient so they wrote a history section of their own but it poses opinion as canon fact. their tdm threads also seem to suggest they don't really know how to handle the character's more complicated aspects and are just focused on a few surface level traits (even in the thread with my character, who is theirs' close friend and shares a few secrets with them).

but the game doesn't allow challenge apps/reserves and there's no way for me to just ask them not to app without coming off as unwelcoming.

having been in this situation before, i'd just app another character

in my case, the two characters were ride or die close but the two had complicated aspects to their relationship, and because the player was focused so intensely on the surface level and easy traits, i was always frustrated with their cr. we could never really delve into their relationship like i wanted to, and eventually the grammatical problems started to drive me up the wall. being in that situation with your character's closest canon cr is pretty miserable, even if you've got amazing cross canon cr to play with.

this is all good advice tbh.

it's harder when the poorly-done character is apping into an existing cast/joining a castmate though. if the mods are canonblind they won't catch on to the stating opinion as fact, for one. and if the other player finds out somebody told the mods "hey can you not let in this subpar app" it's the sort of thing that becomes prime wank material.

if you know the mods in your game are good about addressing player concerns and you think the issues with the app are significant enough that they'd be rejected by someone canon-familiar, i'd shoot the mods a PM along the lines of "hey i don't want to overstep any boundaries but i noticed a lot of issues with this person's app that i wasn't sure youmd recognize if you're canonblind" and just explain the problems you're seeing. don't tell them that it should be rejected, leave the decision up to them, but at least you're making sure they're aware and if the person does get accepted then you're already on the record as having issues with their characterization if any trouble ever comes up.

but if it's something subtler you don't think would necessarily warrant a rejection even if they mods knew the canon, it might be better to just keep those opinions to yourself. it sucks, but the best you can do is just be polite but distant. you don't have to play with them if you don't want to.

if you don't like the person apping, don't play with them. don't go to the mods and "well actually" at them about it.

it's not backseat modding to alert the mods that a person's history section is misconstruing opinion as fact. mods don't have time to double-check every detail of every app they get.

There is this detail about one of my fandom's main character's abilities that I noticed one player got wrong.

Then I noticed another player got it wrong.

Then I noticed everyone who played with these players started to get it wrong.

It's an epidemic and I'm too nice to say anything because that would be weird But it annoys me so much.

The worst is that I can't even find any written proof that this is not how it works, because they added onto his abilities so naturally these added on things aren't found on any wiki.

You can claim I should just ignore it but when they talk about this stuff with my character then it involves me... and my character is not in a position to tell them any different icly.

not trying to be a dick especially since in my fandom i too am That Guy who notices when people get tiny details wrong - but if you can't point to any proof, how are you sure you're not the one who's wrong?

yeah, gonna need to +1 this. magic and abilities are those things that are generally up in the air because of the fact they're not 'real'. it's like saying 'well, you need to do a specific wrist motion for this hp spell' when it was never clarified in the books/movies and someone else is going with 'my char's adept enough that they don't need to vocalize spells/do the swishy want motions' which is also canon, so... you're both wrong and right.

a good example would help.

start a conversation. instead of opening with 'you're all wrong', maybe open with 'i could be wrong, but this is how i thought it was, so could you explain why it's this way instead?'

that comes off as less confrontational, less know it all, and more open to a dialogue which could have you either changing the way they view it or seeing how they do so now you know why they do that.

if this is a case of a headcanon/fanon becoming so prevalent that it's taken as fact and not an outright contradiction of canon, then in my experience yeah, you're going to have a much harder time getting other players to knock it off
