Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

How do you manage to play against characters you flat out dislike? Not due to the person playing them, but because you don't like their canon or where the writer took the character or they just flat out annoy you. Do you set it aside and play against them anyway, or do you opt out?

depends on the character/source, tbh. i'm not keen to play with rapist characters, so i wouldn't want to play with a kilgrave, but most kilgrave players are self-aware and have an opt out post, which i'd use. i play characters from canons that have questionable content and i've put opt out posts in my journals because i know not everyone's comfortable with playing from a canon like orphan black. i'm not too sure i'd want to play against someone from american horror story (just from what i've heard of it through talk) and might opt out if i had to.

but if it's just 'eh, i don't like what canon point they're playing from', i'd get over it.

I tend to give them a chance, if only because the other person has to like that character at least A LITTLE in order to be playing them (or at least I like to think so), so there has to be something to like about them. Sometimes I still don't see the appeal, sometimes I can and it makes that character a lot more fun to play off of. Sometimes, with those characters that get on your nerves? A change of scenery is enough for them to shine and to show off what's good about them.

Still, if the person has an opt out post, or just not engaging is an option, then there's that out if you really need it, for if you still can't stand the character. If asked, make sure it's clear that it's because of the character choice and that there's nothing personal about it. Most people will understand, and overall you're in this to have fun.

it depends on why i dislike the character. assuming it's not related to anything triggering or upsetting to me ooc, though, i'll give them a shot. sometimes characters that are obnoxious in their source material can be entertaining in an rp context. for example, a character who's treated as always being in the right in his home canon would annoy the piss out of me, but if he's played by someone who lets him actually be in the wrong i'd enjoy them a lot more.

I don’t.

I don’t owe anyone tags. This is a casual hobby.

I'm here to have fun, not to force myself to tag characters I have absolutely no desire to deal with.

the only situation where I can imagine being forced to interact with a character I disliked is if an event or modplot in a game paired them up for a required thing and let's be real, we've all seen tons of people just flake out on an event if they can't be arsed to tag the other person.

I take a deep and primal joy in playing terrible human beings for the thrill of torturing them, and accordingly will bite for a lot of characters I don't necessarily like if I'm invited to torture them.

Not liking where canon took a character's character can be remedied by a writer I enjoy being behind the wheel.

Characters that annoy me, well it depends on how they annoy me and how I encounter them. Obnoxious shonen hero archetypes annoy me by being boring and patronising.

I honestly have more problems with characters being boring. So if someone presents me a scenario relevant to my interests and engages me with an obnoxious shonen hero I'll play no problems, if they want me to play with an obnoxious shonen hero only to enable them to be obnoxious shonen heroes I'm not tagging anything because the scenario is as boring as the character and there's nothing for me there.
