This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. I don’t understand why this is weird. The DM of a tabletop game doesn’t usually have a character they’re playing as well. With the amount of work good modding takes to do, I wouldn’t care if they’d prefer to focus on the game entirely as opposed to splitting it between that and keeping up with their character.

ithe difference is that DMs get to play all the random people in the world and all the party's potential allies and enemies. they're still getting to play, just not as one specific character. mods set up the plots but then generally just have to sit back and watch other people play with them. i'd understand it more if the mod was playing the game's NPCs like actual characters, but people around here seem to take issue with NPCs that have any presence beyond "brief appearances to impartially deliver plot info".

all that said, i wouldn't care either way if a mod was playing in their game or dedicated solely to modding. i just can't imagine it'd be much fun for them when most of the modding work in games these days is just app processing and lists upkeep and writing prompts for other people to engage with.

agreed. and god knows that people have given mods shit for daring to play in other games, because it means they're not 'paying enough attention' to their own game. it's stupid. the only way to win is not to mod.
