why are all of the support guides online centered around who i personally can romance and NOT which of my fire emblem barbies should i be smashing together so that they may find True Love

which is to say: does anyone know which A-supports between units are romance-oriented? i could just look them up but trying to avoid spoilers!

(actually also, i'm just curious given the controversy: are there any non-het romance supports between the units, or are the characters in question all conveniently gay/bi for byleth?)

Dorothea and edelgard both have romantic supports with women besides byleth. Theyre explicitly bi characters. As for 'romance oriented,' it varies based on the characters a lot, as well as your personal interpretation of romance. Dedue x Dimitri talks a lot about their lifelong devotion and is the only one of dimitris samesex endings not to mention a wife, but its technically not explicitly romantic, as an examplem

I think that's all of the non-het ones. Asterisks are the ones that I've personally done and can attest are at least somewhat romantic in the end texts. Ingrid/Ashe is mostly platonic but can be seen as ambiguously romantic. I don't think that Ashe actually has a lot of explicitly romantic endings.

if they’re a guy and girl that can A support, then it’s most likely to be romance. confirmed bi characers have romantic A supports with same sex as well. (On BE route rn, and god Dorothea just romances everyone. No matter how hard I try, I can’t get her to it get support points from someone somehow.)

Also you’re not locked out from getting more A supports for all units after your first A support with them. So you can play around to your hearts content with other ships if you farm support points.

don't scroll too far down or you risk running into spoilers but this covers all the paired endings, i think!

note that that list isn't 100% reliable because it was only based on datamined epilogue texts, without the corresponding context from the characters' support chain. there's some pairings that sound platonic from their paired epilogues alone but may still have some romantic A supports (or S supports in byleth's case). annette/mercedes and shamir/catherine come to mind, for example (at least in jp, though from what i've heard it's still at least somewhat present in eng too), and some have different outcomes depending on the route (i.e. felix/sylvain is implicitly romantic, but outside of blue lions their epilogue differs).

if you're unsure about what characters to pair together and don't want to risk ending up with pairings you don't like, you can always do the following:
-unlock, but don't view, the A support for every pairing you're curious about
-save
-view every A support you've unlocked so you can decide which ones you like best
-reload, then only activate the A supports you want a paired ending for, and then just continue normally

afaik, that's the most reliable way to guarantee two characters will end up together, and as long as you've viewed the supports at all at least once, they'll be accessible in the extras menu if you ever feel like watching them again.

from the ones i've seen so far (two playthroughs atm), ones that are unambiguously romantic: dorothea/petra, dorothea/manuela, mercedes/annette, catherine/shamir.

ones that are arguably romantic (blushing, some debatably romantic lines, and/or paired endings that involve spending their lives together, being buried together, or similar things): felix/sylvain, dimitri/dedue, dimitri/felix, dedue/ashe, caspar/linhardt.

ones i can't verify atm but have seen mentioned: edelgard/dorothea, edelgard/lysithea, edelgard/manuela.

disclaimer: playing in japanese myself and at least two of these supports (mercedes/annette, felix/sylvain) are downplayed a bit in english from what i've seen mentioned (mercedes/annette gets played as a bit more of a joke, felix/sylvain uses much less romantically charged wording), but i don't think anything's been scrubbed completely, at least. there might be a few more pairings i'm not aware of yet, too.
