even if you dont agree with the discourse around that word, its almost guaranteed that anyone who uses it like that is gonna be gross about it.

they're definitely playing traps whether they say they are or not. heavily implying the word instead of outright using it isn't better.

yeah, i figured. i love that particular character type because im trash but also i just enjoy exploring gender-non-conforming expressions and identities in rp, but i gotta be picky about who i play that sort of thing with. using that word is a big red flag.

actually no i lied there are two types, edgy-ultraviolence and obviously-not-a-trap-because-that'd-be-problematic-but-you-know-what-you're-looking-at-here. and none of them ever do anything despite 1-3 of them being on almost every meme. if it was that one kylo ren or those two same comics guys then okay whatever but it's so varied and yet the same that i'm almost falling into arg habits and looking for ciphers at this point lmao

the character type isn't problematic it's the word itself and what it implies.

i think they meant some of their usernames. one of their accounts is called "firetrapped"

at best, it just has nasty implications about gender-non-conforming people, at worse, the attitude behind it has lead to the actual deaths of irl trans people. it started out as a definite slur against trans women and crossdressers on 4chan, after all, before it got into the fandom lexicon.

as far as alternative terms, if we're talking japanese characters, there's otokonoko and jousou. the first has somewhat fetish-y connotations and is largely associated with porn (equivalent to "sissy" over here in the same context" where as jousou just means male crossdresser (the word literally translates to "wearing woman"). if you want something less weeby, crossdresser is a term anyone can understand at this point and doesn't really need further details.

some japanese characters have complicated gender identities associated with their crossdressing and aren't just strictly male or trans female, and that's generally called "x-gender" but you're not going to see a lot of crossdressing characters this complicated in most weeb-adjacent media.

mmm yeah sure do love the 'are traps gay' debate that boils down to "i'm sexually attracted to this person and therefore their gender identity depends on my sexual orientation and not the other way around"

adding to what anon above said, the word trap comes from, well, "it's a trap" which comes from the idea that crossdressers and/or trans people are trying to "trick you"
