Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

just apped my first game and i'm weirdly afraid they're going to deny me?!? have you ever been denied from a game before? what's the most likely reasons people get told no?

(Anonymous) 2019-08-08 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
i've never been rejected from a game but most often people are rejected because:

1) their writing is bad
2) they didn't follow the app rules
3) they are a huge wanker and the mods were warned

assuming 2 and 3 don't apply to you, if you're a decent writer you should be fine. people rarely get rejected for quality reasons these days

also make sure that you follow the app rules in the area that your character is appable. someone was just rejected from my game because their character didn't have enough canon to be appable. there's a headcanon rule in dwrp where most games don't allow in canon chars if they don't have a certain amount of canon to pull from. if you're doing 50% or more of your char having to be headcanoned and they aren't a solid char, it's likely you won't get accepted.

4) they have high-ass standards
5) the mods want their buddy to get in, not you
6) the mods hate your canon

i worry about this every time and i've never even gotten revisions so you're probably good

When I was a mod, we most often denied people for their character not having enough canon or their app being completely incomprehensible. Most common revisions were for not following the rules for samples (we wanted samples that showed the character's voice but a surprising number of people would just give a narration dump without any of their characters inner thoughts/voice), for having a scant personality section, and for having samples that didn't match the personality section (for example, telling us that character was nice and polite to everyone but their sample is them calling someone an asshole). That last one would turn into a flat-out rejection if it was really different, but that only happened a few times.

+1

Another former mod here and not having enough canon + incomprehensible app were the two big reasons we denied people. Likewise, agreed on revisions based on a scant personality section were the most common revisions.

There were a few people who got revisions because based on their powers section, they were obvious godmodders and we wanted them to tone that shit down, but those were few and far between.

So long as youre remotely capable of writing a coherent sentence and following the instructions given in the app rules post, you wont

The only times I've outright denied apps were 1. when people who obviously didn't read apped jamjar characters to an AU-only game, and 2.) when a known wanker apped a character who was a sadistic serial killer and the app was so disgusting that I couldn't even finish reading it.

I'm pretty lax when it comes to canon backstory and personality - I don't mind headcanon as long as it seems consistent with the canon and the overall impression of the character. If you're worried about headcanon it's a good idea to check with the mods before you app. Most of my revision requests are either for nitpicky things (like making sure a character's powers are well-defined so they can't powergame), or for confusing/incoherent/rambling writing. I once got an app that was so ridiculously long and unfocused that I asked the player to cut it in half and resubmit... and even after it had been cut in half it was one of the longest apps I've ever read.

damn, i'm really curious about that serial killer one.

same

whenever i hear about something being "disgusting" or "disturbing" i snap at that bait like the schmuck i am

I was rejected from one game out of the probably 50ish I’ve ever apped to and gotten into without issue. I have a feeling the mods didn’t want me apping this character because their friend wanted in or something, because they didn’t ask me for revisions and their rejection notice was flimsy. The game didn’t last very long anyway. It was on LJ.

From the perspective of an app mod, the main reason I've rejected people is that they clearly haven't read the app guidelines. Make sure you're giving the mods the information they've asked for in the manner they've requested, and you have a good shot at getting in.

As a mod myself - we generally tell known wankers (or our players brought up legit issues) looking to app ahead of time that we won't accept them, or if it's clear they did not read our rules.

previous app mod here and here's why we asked for revisions and/or gave rejections.

revisions: when we ask for samples and we don't get what we asked for (ask for a network sample and get five paragraphs of introspective bracket text and one line of speech), we ask for a secondary sample. powers sections not being clear (game protags listing power names without giving ideas of what those powers do, 'magic' being a power without explanation (please for the love of god describe your magic), saying super strength without giving examples of how super) and asking for clarification. if we've asked for canon examples in your personality and you don't give any, we might ask for a revision.

rejection: asking for revisions and getting them back and them not being what we asked for or needing to ask a second time. writing so bad that it's illegible. (i'm fine with esl/dyslexia especially if there's a notification on it, but if you've got x time to do an app that's more than five minutes and your app is illegible, i have little faith that a tag is going to be better from you). if they outright have no concept of their character to the point i know they're not going to play their character icly because they can't conceive of them icly (imagine writing joker as a good guy who just was misunderstood). or arguing with the mods over a decision to nerf abilities/cap something, the inability to nerf/cap for a game.
