Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

My RP partner recently picked up a character from a canon I'm unfamiliar with. That's cool, we do it all the time, and sometimes that convinces one of us to try a new piece of media.

But. This character has THE MOST UNBEARABLE VERBAL TIC.

I have no idea if he has it in canon, or she's putting it on. Think...really bad baby talk. From a sixteen-year-old animu boy. (Hence why I don't know how accurate it is. Verbal tics can be hard to translate from one language to another.)

She's in love with this monstrosity and talks about it nonstop, and I don't want to ruin her enjoyment of him in any way. But if I have to thread with this creature one more time, I'm going to rip the hair out of my head.

WWYD? I'm torn between asking her to just please type normally (potentially dampening her enjoyment? ugh) or trying to help her find someone else to bounce off of.

if it really is 'bad baby talk' and not just a naruto 'believe it!' kind of deal, i'd tell her to knock it off bc nobody wants to put up with that shit. yes, it may be ic, but in rp people should try to balance strict ic-ness with other people's enjoyment.

if it's the latter, ask her to tone it down. a verbal tick doesn't have to be every paragraph/sentence to have impact.

i don't understand what you're saying no da. surely everyone finds it adorable and not at all annoying when i end every sentence with my nonsense verbal tic na no da?

knock it off, zura!

Idk Chichiri without the “na no da”/“ya know?” Feels wrong esp. since the big indicator that Shits Getting Real is when he drops it all together.

That’s the character I think of with that example anyhow. And I feel like something they do that marks the end of a sentence isn’t nearly as obnoxious as something like baby talk or an annoying accent. Or like that one Idol boy who upticks every other word or smth so he’s always talking like thIS reaLLY weird homeSTUCK troll or something of anyone know what I’m talking about.

that one idol boy's speech is so grating, i can't stand seeing any tags by the ones i see around

Yeah but if you're playing Chichiri in an English-speaking RP you find a way to translate na no da. If you want to have him use that tic you need to find a Japanese RP to play in.

as someone who rp'd chichiri for a couple years, nah. personal preference. it's a nonsense phrase that means nothing, so universal translators wouldn't necessarily pick it up and translate it imo.

even if they would, which is more grating: "no da" at the end of every sentence, or the english dub's "y'know?"

...uh, no da is much more grating in otherwise English-language writing. Plus keeping the Japanese verbal tic just invites Western characters to go "what does that mean??" when it's not something that should draw that kind of attention.

In Japanese, a constant "na no da" doesn't sound like gibberish, it just sounds like weird Japanese. The exact same way a character constantly using "y'know" or "eh?" or "yeah" at the end of the sentences would sound in English.

There are absolutely ways to translate most verbal tics into ways that reflects their meaning. The only reason they aren't is because the translator was lazy, the player is lazy, or both are weeaboos.

not to mention that in most games, there's a universal translator, so 'na no da' is going to come out as 'y'know' unless the player makes a concerted effort to have their character concentrate enough to break the translator specifically to say something in a language the other doesn't understand. like having french characters in canons who speak english calling other characters by french pet names when it should be spoken in english, since if they were speaking just french, it would all come out 'universal' as well.

people always forget about the translator thing and non-english (non universal) words in any language are going to come out translated. so there's no ma cherie or na no da or liebchen. even though yes, it's canon to add it on, in a game, in rp, it's negated. so clinging to it and using one word or an honorific or non-english verbal tic comes off as just being extra in a way you don't need to be.

generally agreed but there's also cases where the verbal tic is translated literally at the insistence of the original creators/rights holders. sometimes people who don't know english at all will still make strange demands of translators. if you ever see a japanese property with an utterly nonsense localized title ('rascal does not dream of bunny girl senpai'), this is probably the case.

A phrase for which there's no obvious translation =/= a nonsense phrase that means nothing

also, I find it astonishing that you think a person who is speaking English ending every sentence with "no da" is less grating than ending every sentence with "y'know"
