the problem is it doesn't bother the (very vocal) minority who is doing it. many of these responses acknowledged that most players were perfectly fine. it's a smaller subset that is SO BAD as to make modding excruciating even though they're not the larger playerbase.

there's not a lot that we can do about a mostly anonymous vocal minority except maybe stop listening to them and shout them down, as the non-vocal majority.

because we take complaints on wankcomms as sacrosanct. this shit follows people around forever when 90% of this crap doesn't matter.

until we're ready to admit that, you're right. there isn't a lot we can do.

yeah. a few vocal anons wield an insane amount of power because we, as a community, are willing to believe them.

i've seen mods dragged thru the mud on wg because they made responsible decisions to penalize misbehaving players. players who convinced their friends they were wronged (they weren't), who encouraged them to retaliate and create a public shitstorm. i've seen the very real emotional and mental effects on said mods. it's horrifying

i'll be honest, i feel like the opposite is true for anon discourse about game decisions. usually punished players are treated as having earned their punishment, at least in cases like jamie or callie or those two weird RPers who think they speak to actual faeries. or even classic cases like stormy and ken.

sometimes there's some whiteknighting going on, but most of the time people generally agree with a mod's decision to come down on a player because we tend to see the same things the mods do in terms of player behavior (or at least understand when the same player is punished for the same behavior in enough places that there's fire to go with the smoke, if their behavior is publicly "clean"). i can only think of a few times where this was scrutinized, and usually it was for good reason.

we're not talking about the 10% of times this is warranted, when the players brought up in game wank are outed for legitimately problem behavior. this isn't even about game wank in general, which ranges from mod complaints to player complaints to people mad it exists or looked at them funny.

this is specifically about how the anon culture treats moderators, which is very poorly. of course some of these big long discussions about taking care of problem players are what sticks out, but this isn't the majority of cases in the slightest.

we're talking about mod wank that closes games over mechanics people yelled about for a week (when those mods never had to offer to change anything, it's their game). we're talking about games that have been forced to shutter (sometimes before they even open) over anything from age rules, to not allowing ocs, to daring to cater to niche groups of players, for not being perfectly coded, for being coded too well, the list goes on.

if you want an ongoing example, look at how the duplicity mods are dragged through the ringer every time the wind changes.

i don't even like duplicity as a game or much of the playerbase but the mods themselves are treated like shit constantly and they are far from being the first to experience that.

just because there have been a few times it was justified - like the quiet place, for instance - that doesn't negate most of the times it's not. not even close.

agreed. i'm also not fond of duplicity, have never played there, and i think the mods could benefit from some consideration of people's input on the opt-in/consent aspect, but...

i was glancing in the thread the other day and was blown away in particular by how nasty people were being about the writing style in the event post?? calling it "purple prose" and "terrible writing "and generally complaining about what is essentially aesthetics in really unproductive, abusive ways. like. what the fuck, dude. it's one thing to want to clarify the parameters of the event but to fucking complain the writing is not up to your standards when these people are facilitating your fun for fucking free is just. beyond mindblowing.

fuck right off. if you think you can write a better event log, then why don't you open a game and... oh. no? you don't want to? you just want someone to work their ass off to make something perfectly up to your standards while you sit back on your laurels and reap all the benefits? ohhh. gotcha. gotcha my dude
