the language barrier is a novel way to make sure nobody apps anything except western canons the mod likes, lol

Re: WASTEYARD

that is certainly a way to interpret a game mechanic

Re: WASTEYARD

no?

games used to have language barriers pretty frequently. discedo had one, and that game was anime dominated most of the time.

not every game requires some convenient pre-tower of babel magic spell to be played in, anon.

language barriers can spark in-game conflict and creative interactions between characters or a setting.

Re: WASTEYARD

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
the language barrier can be used as an interesting challenge for characters to work together and problem-solve, or build cr by trying to learn how to communicate together despite the differences

be more creative lmao

i mean, maybe, but it's kind of cool to see it rather than an inexplicable "everyone understands all spoken and written dialogue and nobody bats an eye at how weird it is". it certainly adds to the survival horror element

You know it's OK to point out what MIGHT be problematic, right? You COULD swallow a remark like this with a hint of self-reflection like, huh, that MIGHT BE a potential side effect. The admins will have to watch out for that.

If your default reaction is, "NU HUH IDIOT. SHUT UP. NOT CREATIVE," you need to examine why you’re being so defensive of a game mechanic.

dude there's no "might" in op's jab, they're clearly already assuming that the mods are maliciously trying to exclude anything but western canons

stop trying to frame an obvious attempt at racewank with "oh they're just being politely concerned!! it's constructive criticism!!!" shit like this stops being constructive crit when it's so obviously somebody wanting to start wank and nothing more

if yall are so legitimately concerned you'd be taking it to the game's mods instead of making jabs in an anoncomm. don't be butthurt when people tell you to get creative while the rpa mods freeze your bait attempts

Eh, it'll just end up like The Quiet Place where everyone handwaved that their characters were just texting each other 24/7 and it hindered no one.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
as someone who is considering the game, I wouldn't hate this if the mod is chill about it. but I kind of love the idea of characters having to struggle to cooperate and survive a situation and language would be a fun hurdle.

I play in a game where language barriers are handwaved and it feels hokey. there are fun nuances to languages that can be fun to share between characters.

additionally, plenty of characters can be bilingual or more, so. if the writers in the game are smart, it can be a good group-building thing to IC track down who speaks what which could help build CR and encourage IC networking. I'm looking forward to it if I app.

your jab at the mods was unnecessary, but i think you bring a good point about the language barrier limiting interactions or even discouraging characters from apping, assuming people don't just pretend it doesn't exist.

there was a small game way back on lj that had a language barrier, and only ever had like one japanese-speaking anime character. i'm sure the players managed to have fun with it, but i'd get tired of all my threads being centered around just trying to be understood.

maybe i'm misunderstanding, but having a radio or writing things down makes the language barrier a non-issue, doesn't it? that doesn't seem too bad to me. the faq also literally says people can handwave the language barrier if they don't feel like dealing with it.

in a horror game, characters should be uncomfortable, frightened, stressed out, scared, weirded out, be angry, etc - there are a ton of different visceral or emotional responses characters could be having in response to a language barrier in this genre.

if you app a character that focuses solely on simply being understood, that's going to be boring to play against and make your characterization seem very flat and one-dimensional. and chances are the player would be bored playing a one note character themselves.

i feel like you and ayrt are mistaking character communication with actual characterization. dialogue is only one way that characters communicate with one another. if a simple language barrier between characters is cripples a writer to the point they can't think of any overcome it, they need to improve their characterization skills or their creativity.

the true problem isn't an issue with the in-game limitation, it's an issue with the player needing to hone their writing skills and learn how to think outside of the box and take a different approach with their character.

then maybe it's not a game for those kinds of people

nevermind that radios in the game, at current, auto-translate characters using them, which is one work-around: "But anything filtered through radios, devices, or other items found in the setting (i.e., "native" items) automatically translates."

like, why is this even an argument happening in this game's thread?

Yeah, language barriers can be fun, but it's a mechanic that can impact some characters disproportionately while being a non-issue for others, depending on who happens to get apped, and that difference will often (though by no means exclusively) fall along medium divide lines. OP was out there but I wouldn't blame anyone for feeling wary.

That said this game has pretty solid workarounds and, like with TQP as someone mentioned, it'll probably end up getting ignored most of the time anyway. Hopefully people will occasionally have fun with it and otherwise not sweat it.

Re: WASTEYARD

(Anonymous) 2019-05-23 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I seriously considered implementing a language barrier in my own game, but a few friends brought up points like that that made me reconsider. You also have characters from canons with made up languages and only speak English for the sake of the audience not having to read subtitles the entire time, and the thought of spending most of your time in a game trying to be understood sounded frustrating to me as well. I know a game I was in back in the LJ days had a language barrier but they got by due to having language learning technology and multiple other non-English speaking or multi-lingual characters.

Much as I hate making another game with a magical autotranslate mechanic, I don't want to give people the notion that I want to alienate anyone or discourage players from apping from different types of canons where this would be a consistent issue. I know in real life immersion is often the easiest way to learn a new language and more games could stand to use that as a basis for getting around that barrier, but I'm not sure how many people would see it that way, like some of the anons in this thread.
