your jab at the mods was unnecessary, but i think you bring a good point about the language barrier limiting interactions or even discouraging characters from apping, assuming people don't just pretend it doesn't exist.

there was a small game way back on lj that had a language barrier, and only ever had like one japanese-speaking anime character. i'm sure the players managed to have fun with it, but i'd get tired of all my threads being centered around just trying to be understood.

maybe i'm misunderstanding, but having a radio or writing things down makes the language barrier a non-issue, doesn't it? that doesn't seem too bad to me. the faq also literally says people can handwave the language barrier if they don't feel like dealing with it.

Re: WASTEYARD

that's the discush. is it handwaved or is it a strict mechanic with possible access issues. which will be truuuu ooOOOoooo spoopy.

in that case, doesn't it just seem a little useless to have at all? what if you have one member of a cast who keeps with the language barrier while the rest doesn't? they'd have to come up with an ic explanation for why only bob can't just talk to people in person, or why john is always complaining that no one speaks the same language as him.

that and considering how often people complain about games being too network focused, anything that discourages in-person threads just seems pointless to me. a language barrier in the other direction, where characters can understand speech but not text, would be more feasible.

i took it to mean we could handwave getting around the barrier but not ignore it completely, if that makes sense? but i agree letting some people get around it would defeat the purpose.

as for in-person threads, it sounds like the radios and mirrors will take care of that? i'm actually thinking of tdming a straightlaced military char and the idea of him using his callsign to talk to someone right next to him really tickles me.

cdc had a language barrier to start with and that was really fun to play with. one of the only fun things to play with in cdc.

in a horror game, characters should be uncomfortable, frightened, stressed out, scared, weirded out, be angry, etc - there are a ton of different visceral or emotional responses characters could be having in response to a language barrier in this genre.

if you app a character that focuses solely on simply being understood, that's going to be boring to play against and make your characterization seem very flat and one-dimensional. and chances are the player would be bored playing a one note character themselves.

i feel like you and ayrt are mistaking character communication with actual characterization. dialogue is only one way that characters communicate with one another. if a simple language barrier between characters is cripples a writer to the point they can't think of any overcome it, they need to improve their characterization skills or their creativity.

the true problem isn't an issue with the in-game limitation, it's an issue with the player needing to hone their writing skills and learn how to think outside of the box and take a different approach with their character.

then maybe it's not a game for those kinds of people

nevermind that radios in the game, at current, auto-translate characters using them, which is one work-around: "But anything filtered through radios, devices, or other items found in the setting (i.e., "native" items) automatically translates."

like, why is this even an argument happening in this game's thread?

because we're far enough away from a time when language barriers in games were more common that we have a whole slew of people who have no exposure to the idea and have no idea how to react to it.

i mean they have a valid point. rpers were, at some point, able to function in games with language barriers just fine, as games with that particular element were more common. one can only assume a fuss is being kicked up now because it's been a minute since then.

i mean they have a valid point. America was, at some point able to function with segregation just fine.

no one's fucking saying it can't be done, just that it poses a fucking problem for a lot of people jfc.

we get it it doesn't effect you so you don't give a shit about it changing. calm down it probably won't and your life won't change in the least. thank god.

dwrp's conformist culture has gotten to the point that it's become mindnumbing, apparently. are the rpers here really that incompetent at thinking and learning new things? i didn't think they were.

ayrt has a valid point. just don't app, pass it by, and let the players who do find it appealing enjoy themselves without sabotaging the game for them. if a game isn't going to be for you, then that's all that there needs to be said and done about it.

Re: WASTEYARD

Yeah, language barriers can be fun, but it's a mechanic that can impact some characters disproportionately while being a non-issue for others, depending on who happens to get apped, and that difference will often (though by no means exclusively) fall along medium divide lines. OP was out there but I wouldn't blame anyone for feeling wary.

That said this game has pretty solid workarounds and, like with TQP as someone mentioned, it'll probably end up getting ignored most of the time anyway. Hopefully people will occasionally have fun with it and otherwise not sweat it.

Re: WASTEYARD

(Anonymous) 2019-05-23 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I seriously considered implementing a language barrier in my own game, but a few friends brought up points like that that made me reconsider. You also have characters from canons with made up languages and only speak English for the sake of the audience not having to read subtitles the entire time, and the thought of spending most of your time in a game trying to be understood sounded frustrating to me as well. I know a game I was in back in the LJ days had a language barrier but they got by due to having language learning technology and multiple other non-English speaking or multi-lingual characters.

Much as I hate making another game with a magical autotranslate mechanic, I don't want to give people the notion that I want to alienate anyone or discourage players from apping from different types of canons where this would be a consistent issue. I know in real life immersion is often the easiest way to learn a new language and more games could stand to use that as a basis for getting around that barrier, but I'm not sure how many people would see it that way, like some of the anons in this thread.
