Not a particularly experienced one, mind you, I've only been out of school for about 5 years and working for 3 1/2, but I can do my best.

I have thin hair too! I recommend trying a baking soda and apple cider vinegar wash once or so a month. You could also try taking apple cider tablets but I have personal experience with the wash. Just don't get it in your eyes haha.

I have curly hair, but I've found most hairstylists don't know how to cut curly hair properly. I've had so many bad cuts that it's gotten to the point that I avoid getting a haircut for as long as I possibly can. Do they not really teach cutting curly hair in most schools, or do I just keep getting shitty stylists?

Bad stylists. you always want to get a wash with curly hair, even if it's more expensive. they need to know how to cut it wet + knowing the right tension to use to make sure it doesn't curl up too much when it dries. wetting it keeps it uniform and they need to take small sections and take their time. it really sucks for people with curly hair, and I won't lie when I say I've definitely messed up for people myself. If the salon has something like tiers for their stylists try and shoot for a master/highest level and explain to them how you've felt about cuts and I hope you can find someone who'll take care of you anon. <3

i'm traveling in a different state right now, and my hair went from beautiful and glossy to greasy and impossible to style. any tips on helping with this?

It's your different eating habits/using different soaps and things if you're using hotel products and that kind of thing. Your hair and skin get used to routine, so when it changes it can send everything out of wack. Drink a lot more water and try to cut down on washing for a little white anon.

thanks hair stylist anon! now i know what to do when i'm traveling and save myself some greasy oily trauma

not to discredit hairstylist anon or anything, but your problem immediately struck me as a hard water thing more than anything. when my hair starts to get gross and impossible i know it's time to change my filter, so you might wanna look into it if your problem keeps persisting!

This can absolutely be a reason, too. Getting a good cleansing shampoo will help with hard water a lot.

what are the pros and cons to dry shampoo? i'm curious about the stuff since i've been told it could help me maintain my cloudpuff i call hair but i'm nervous of putting anything new to said cloudpuff.

I keep almost accidentally logging in omg lol

But dry shampoo is really good for a lot of stuff! But, most people use it wrong. You should really only wash your hair 1-2 times a week to keep your natural oils, especially if it's puffy or whispy like you're probably describing. After washing it, put a little dry shampoo at the roots of your hair, section by section, after you've dried it/let it air dry. Too many people put it on when their hair is already greasy like it'll wash it, and then complain about build up. Dry shampoo is about preventing more dirt, it's an oil/grease eater, not a cleanser.

I'd recommend getting some shampoo 3/deep cleansing shampoo and use it about once a week with minimal conditioner (only at the ends, and not at all if your hair is shorter than your nape) and apply the dry shampoo after letting it air dry. Because it's wispy, I'd say don't use a hair drier or heat on it to dry it without using some kind of static reducing product. If you have color treated or lightened hair don't use shampoo 3 because it'll wash the color out but there's alternatives for colored hair like "diamond" gloss shampoos and stuff with smoothers, I'd recommend Matrix and Paul Mitchell because those are the brands I used in school and now at work but CHI is my favorite brand for dry shampoo because it smells really good and doesn't leave any kind of build up as long as you don't over do it.

A lot of this might be jargon so just lmk if you don't understand haha.

also a stylist!

just wanted to add that the key here is to use the dry shampoo near your scalp -- not ON your scalp. putting the product onto your scalp can cause irritation/dandruff. make sure that stuff's going onto your hair. 😆 i know tooooo many people who complain to me that it gives them itchy scalp or dandruff and when i have the demonstrate how they apply it, it's like watching someone shake salt onto french fries.

With reducing how often one wash's one's hair, does it ever actually stop feeling absolutely disgusting the second day or is the whole idea of oil production going down just a lie? I'll try for weeks and the second day always seems to be the same level of gross and it's hard to sustain while needing to go out in public so I go back to washing daily to be presentable.

Re: Hairstylist

(Anonymous) 2019-05-17 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it can take up to 6 months for your body to readjust to that sort of thing. Use dry shampoo right after you shower and reapply as necessary though the week. Brush your hair really well daily to keep the oils brushed to the ends and out and only use conditioner very lightly at the ends of your hair when you do wash it and only if your hair is longer than nape length. Pony tail it or wear a hat or whatever you wanna do in the one or two days before wash day to keep from feeling too icky. Drink lots more water than you usually do and maybe try a biotin vitamin or something too to help with your hair health over all.

on the days when you don't shampoo and conditioner it, are you rinsing it when you shower or keeping it dry with a shower cap?

i have a horrendously bad flaky scalp, and i don't know what to do about it. :( head&shoulders doesn't seem to work and i don't overwash my hair, so i can't be drying out my skin. but it's still flaky all the time. do you guys notice when someone with a crusty scalp comes in? does it gross you out? what the hell do we do to fix it?

Re: Hairstylist

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
da but have you seen a dermatologist? i have psoriasis and dandruff treatments like h&s don't work for me. do you have flaky skin anywhere else? or any plaques? try googling for psoriasis pics.

personally i've been shaving my head every week or two so it's easier to clean the scalp gunk but i know that's way too much to ask of most people.

not sure if op would be familiar with any "clear out that flaky af scalp" treatments that hairstylists could do.

You're definitely not the only one with this problem haha. As above, you should see a dermatologist about that kind of thing if it persists because it could be something more serious like psoriasis and stuff like that, but it's not gross! I know girls who are mean about it but it never bothers me (unless it's someone who is very clearly UNWASHED for a LONG TIME with build up in their hair, which is much different) and I have some clients who come to me simply because I've never been grossed out by their hair.

Anyway, I always recommend a baking soda rinse for build up like that, I actually have a personal friend who had this problem to the point her hair was falling out and now that she's doing the baking soda+apple cider vinegar rinse every month or so her hair is healthier and thicker than ever and her scalp is cleared up pretty much completely.

Try it out, as well as shampoo with tytree and mint in them. You want products that will stimulate your scalp and increase blood flow, so the dead skin isn't so bad.

Like I said though, if it persists really badly or gets WORSE see a derm.

other than hair, what else are you knowledgeable about?

for example, how do i convince certain people in my family that sharpie brows look fucking terrible 100% of the time, especially when their hands tremble like fuck?

like, give me some fancy beauty science words to use since they claim their brows are totally natural and just darkened with some make-up magic when that's clearly not the case.

Re: Hairstylist

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
tell them your hair stylist said big chola eyebrows have been out of style since 2002

Re: Hairstylist

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
won't work. i need some "fake health concern" excuse to make them knock that shit off.

they'll claim "i don't tweeze my brows, it's all natural! you just gotta try some MaKeUp MaGiC, anon! yours look a little wonky here... and there..."

https://i.redd.it/q654955p67f21.jpg using this as a reference, most of my /r/awfuleyebrows family lean 2009 rather than 2019. like, you think i don't see your hairless brow being shiny af from the side?? come on.

and they have the gall to shit on my bland but natural brows lmao.

Best "recipe" for baking soda rinse and apple cider vinegar rinse? Does it have to be just with water? Should i use it in place of shampooing and how frequently?

My greasy but flaky hair needs help :(

You can Google good recipes I'm at work right now haha uhm I would just do enough to mix it into a paste and apply to your hair then add more vinegar or bs as needed. Once a month is recommended
