doing more research, i think her seiyuu is also a gravure idol on top of being a voice actress, so the sex-heavy aspects of her design and personality make a lot more sense.

I don't know what their deal is with Ibaraki, but Shuten is blatantly sexualized in her behavior and dialogue. Brave Liz is not. You're being a little disingenuous just going off their designs, especially since Liz's armor is an obvious retro homage (to Dragon Warrior, even) and this is even commented upon in the story.

Is it a little tacky? Yeah, maybe. Is it the "same level of gross" as Shuten? Uh, no. Not even close. Go look at Shuten's FA art again and tell me that's not pandering to a fetish. also the original design actually fit the wearer. brave liz's version of it isn't just skimpy like the original, it's also oversized for her and the only reason her artwork isn't full-on nsfw is the angle.

it's part nostalgia-pandering for people who grew up on older rpgs (like the whole event), but it's definitely also intended as pandering to the crowd that's into sexualized teenage girls.

i 100% get why the design is the way it is, homage wise, but the reason they picked that specific outfit out of all the sword wielding women throughout classic jrpg history (and had it be oversized on liz) was for fanservice reasons. anon's stubborn refusal to admit that is really bizarre.

tbh dq3 female warrior is still fucking popular, for reasons i can't really fathom because i don't find her appealing myself. like, people are still drawing her nearly 30 years later or whatever and churning out doujins. dragon quest is pretty much the number one thing most people in japan think of for JRPGs and there was a actual law that prevented them from releasing on a school day because of how many kids would skip school to play.

i think one reason is that liz isn't normally tradition used for fanservice. most of the shit she gets up to is for gags, and her outfits normally aren't the ones that scream 'fanservice' like kuro or shuten douji does. i like her brave version as much as much as you do but lbr, if they really wanted to pander to the loli teenage crowd, they have no qualms being explicit. the outfit being oversized feels more like a gag on how she's clearly not as mature as the female warrior is (mentally and physically) as she calls herself a hero, just like how she insists that she's a great idol when the running joke is that people would rather die than listen to her sing.

nah it's definitely pandering to that crowd. if all they were aiming for was referencing a popular design, they could've actually made the outfit her size. i don't think it's something you can wave off as just a gag when her regular artwork is a slight angle change away from showing her nipples in front of most of her right breast being exposed as is and her FA art specifically has her kneeling at such an angle that her legs obscure part of her bottom armor and and chest armor's hanging off far enough that it's barely on at all.

just because it's not as bad as kuro or the two ilya's FA art doesn't mean it's not pandering to the same crowd.

as for her FA... i don't really like it but i honestly didn't notice at first glance that her chest armor is almost falling off. she's kneeling but it looks more like it's because she just got done with a big fight and won. i agree that it's pandering but i don't think it's specifically to the loli crowd.

a) there is no law like that. that's a long standing urban myth. people *did* famously skip work/school to get DQ games on release days, though. but there's no official law on the books in japan telling them they can't release on a weekday. that's a decision enix made on their own.

b) liz's first stage outfit, the outfit she wears through the entirety of extra ccc, just has two thin straps over her breasts. fanservice has always been part of liz's character. to wada arco's credit, she has more outfits that AREN'T fanservicey than those that are, but the most popular ones (first ascension and brave liz) are the ones that show the most skin.

i'll agree there's shit that hits the loli-appeal button harder than liz's outfits do, but they're still hitting that button, anon.

that's probably what i heard then. it's honestly been a while so i guess i misremembered, but basically DQ is hugely popular in Japan despite games like Final Fantasy being the face of JRPGs overseas.

honestly i've never noticed because i would say the more fanservice-y characters have always been meltlillith and passionlip. liz always feels like a joke and that we're not supposed to take her seriously, but i've never played CCC and my only experience with her has been in extella and fgo.

anon, there being more obvious examples of fanservice in the game doesn't make brave liz less of a fanservice design. her being a joke doesn't make it less of a fanservice design. it's designed to get folks horny. you're pretty damn naive if you think there was zero sexual intent in putting her in that outfit.
