Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I'm really glad to see this here, mostly because I think Bakugou is a tricky character people often get wrong.

I think the biggest thing I see most often is people softening him up to make him more playable in a game setting. While I understand why this happens, I really do think Bakugou is a character that shouldn't be attempted to be played in a game setting if you want easy CR. Bakugou is not a character who should be making friends easily. He's not talkative, he doesn't like to suffer others much at all, he is HIGH key anti-social. Time and time again we see him in the anime and manga striking out away from the group to do his own thing. He does not like groups, he does not like teamwork, and even when he accepts them as necessary to achieving his goal it still chafes at him. He doesn't want to be beholden to or dependent on anyone, he wants to stand out and do his own thing, and hell to anyone who gets in his way.

Making CR with Bakugou SHOULD be tough, because he doesn't give much of a damn about other people and he doesn't suffer small talk. He has a lot of pride and he often has to be forced to do anything he doesn't want to. He yells and swears a lot, even now when he's mellowed out a little. Yeah, he's had a lot of good character development and he's come a long way-- he's definitely on the path to becoming a hero, he understands that being a hero as about doing the right thing as much as winning, and he doesn't look down on people as much anymore... but that doesn't mean that any of that comes easily to him yet. He's still learning.

That said, he does care about certain people, but he still has a gruff way of showing it. He still isn't the type to go make friends with others-- other people still have to make the effort to make friends with HIM. That said, if you just want to do PSLs, this shouldn't be much of a problem. But if you want to app him to a game setting, I would definitely consider your game carefully, because SOL can make him damn-near unplayable. Bakugou should manage okay in most goal-driven settings with tangible rewards or plot because of his competitive nature, or in any game that forces him to be sociable via game mechanics, but I think if he's in a SOL game and not going nuts and climbing up the walls with boredom, you're probably doing it wrong.

General advice would be awesome. He's not a usual character type I go for, but I wanted to give it a shot.

i'm only passingly familiar with marvel comics as a whole, so any comic nerds want to give some tips on which issues to seek out? lethal protector and planet of the symbiotes are a given, but anything that aligns close-ish with the movie personality would be grand.

general dialogue advice

(Anonymous) 2018-10-27 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
So I have a major problem writing dialogue. Typically, I feel that I go on way too long and fixate on trying to sound cool or witty, and I think it's because I worry that I'm not giving whoever I'm tagging enough to work with. I've picked up a character recently who's a short talker, and even though I've reviewed his canon multiple times, I still feel like I'm at a loss when it comes to imitating that type of dialogue.

So my question for you guys is, how do you write realistic, non-gimmicky dialogue? More than sounding accurate, I want mine to look real.

not an expert by any means (i also have issues being concise & short at times), but have you tried reading your dialogue aloud?

doing so can really help give you an idea of how verbose you’re being and whether the lines in question sound natural or not. sometimes a line can feel short when you’re writing or reading it over in your head, but when you say them aloud it’s like, yikes, that’s a mouthful.

when your character isn't saying much, couch their sparse dialogue in things like description of their body language and tone of voice. i've had threads where the other character said only one or two words in response to mine and i still felt like i had enough to work with because the other player was good about adding in other things that my character might notice or respond to.
