Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

i'm thinking about dropping all of my games and being game free for the first time in a very long time to do memes and psls and finally be pressure free. any non-game anon out there who are glad they made this choice?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
i'm about to. something big is about to go down at my game, and after it does i'm going to drop and be gameless for the first time in ten years. really looking forward to the break, and i already have some lovely psls started and chugging along.

best of luck to you, either way you decide!

same anon.

i'm ready to focus on psls, i'd love to hear from other anons who have done this too.

i've technically done this for about a year or so but i was not really glad about it, no

i gave up on games years ago, and while i don't regret it bc games bore the shit out of me, it's been pretty miserable. everyone's either painfully mediocre or a flake, it's pretty much impossible to get a reliable psl going.

yeah, i did and i’ve been loving it and im drowning in tags but make sure you have 1-2 reliable partners before you do otherwise you’ll be like these other people

me! i've switched off between being in games and being psl/meme-only for the last few years, and i much prefer my psl threads to game threads. i love all of my psl partners and we get to come up with such interesting thread ideas together. meanwhile in games i have to put up with all the struggles of following a game plot (if there is one), mediocre players i don't want to respond to, and people i just plain am not interested in playing with.

so yeah, get yourself some good psl partners/rp friends and live your best life.

I pick up a game every few months, but they never stick very long. My inbox lives and dies by longtime RP buddies, RP with me ads (ymmv, I play a very popular character and tend to get bites) and Kinks you want to Play.

KywtP had always been great. I've always gotten bites on my prompts and though half of them fall through with flakes or no shows, the other half are **amazing**. If something isn't working out, start finding new things to fill in the gaps. That's how I stop from getting bummed over the flakes.

Good luck, nonny!

i've done this!

CONS:

a. you need to find good, consistent people to rp with and that takes time, especially if you want to rp an obscure ship, you're gonna have to try a lot harder to find partners for that

b. community rps seem really realllyyyy boring after compared to the amount of stuff you can do/get away with in psls.

PROS:

a. if you have the right psl partners, being able to start and work and finish storylines together is so fun

b. no pressure with threads provided you've all established tagging patterns and communicate well with each other

c. it's super fun tbh. i've been spoiled by my rp partners.

good luck and have fun!

i haven't played in a game for yeeeeaaars because my psls and meme threads are so ding dang good. i don't even think i could go back to playing in games now if i wanted to. like some of the above anons, kywtp and rp with me have been incredibly good to me over the years. ive also had good luck in memes in finding rp partners who are willing to jump to psls with me

pros:
- like i mentioned above, play exactly what you want with who you want. you have the freedom to be exactly as selective as you want to be in any way you want
- being able to plot out entire character arcs and finish storylines with someone you mesh with is a fantastic feeling
- play any kinky garbage filth you want without other people judging or needing to worry about staying ~ic~
- as long as you're good about communicating and finding people who match your pace, never having the pressure of game tags or scheduled events that might not mesh with your rl schedule

cons:
- people can be flaky as shit, and it can take a while to find people who are reliable and consistent and whose writing and characters mesh up with yours. persistence is key, and not getting discouraged when things don't pan out. i've gotten 7 flakes in a row, followed by 3 bites that turned into long term rp partners/friends. luck plays a big part
- if you're the kind of person who prefers the structure, setting, and prompts provided by a game, changing to a format where you literally make up every single thing as you go can be pretty daunting. you have to be proactive and able to push threads forward
- you might have a harder time getting bites with certain types of characters. it's not even necessarily a matter of popularity, but playing an ~attractive~ twenty-or-thirty something character who is down to smut will open a lot more doors for you tbh

i did this about a year and a half ago! it was a really good choice for me alongside removing myself from rp social media. it freed up a lot of time for me to focus on other things and also do threads that i really enjoy without having to worry about the comment count or other people flaking out on cr plans

folks above are right though: it's difficult to find a consistent rp partner or partners these days, so if you don't have someone already be prepared for a period of disappointment alongside the gems you might find.

this is going to be my bread & butter in a few months and i cant wait tbqh

games are fun but they drag after a while. i like to have a break & do what i want. ac's a hassle anyway

I did this a few times during my time RPing, whenever some of the more negative aspects of dwrp got to me too much and I knew I needed to touch grass but wanted to still have a little fun RPing. I also ran little shared musebox games that were just for me and my friends. It's definitely worth doing if you need a break from the commitment and/or drama of games. One of the times I did it for little bit was after a really harsh conflict with people that were later outed as bigtime wankers and it really helped me relax again and cool off. They'd messed with my head pretty bad so surrounding myself with sane people helped a lot with decompressing from all their manipulation. When I went back to actual games again, I was on a much more even keel thanks to having a break.

The big things to consider is you have better luck finding people and getting something going if you're the one to do setups. Like it's a lot easier to find people if you're willing to get the initial idea rolling. I tended to set up the sandbox stuff or psls and just directly asked that who I was playing with occasionally handle the npcs or progressing things along. It's also important to remember that since it's psl stuff, sometimes things will drop off or you'll get flaked on or ghosted. So it's best to have a mentality of just enjoying each little bit of it as it is. If all you got out of a thread was a few tags but they were fun for a little while, that was still time you had some fun even if it didn't last. There were some psls I did that lasted a long time and they were great but even the little short ones that stopped were fun while they lasted.

I play in games again but I definitely don't regret the times I went game-free.
