He's a big jump tonally from my "type" of character, but I love his arc and want to stretch my writing in a new direction. Advice or general thoughts very welcome!

Canon reviewing

(Anonymous) 2018-05-13 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
No specific canon, just a general question

when you canon review do you review the whole canon or just up to your canon point/certain elements of a canon?

Re: Canon reviewing

(Anonymous) 2018-05-13 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
Various.

I canon review pretty often in the smallest possible way, by rewatching/rereading bits that are specifically relevant to me/my character and literally nothing else. I have compilation videos for some characters that have like all of their screentime, for example, and significant mentions of them/things that are major for them (like how magic works if they can cast magic, etc.).

Then, less often, I do more full canon reviews, at least up to my canon point and sometimes beyond. I tend to pull from later canon points and enjoy rewatching/rereading the canon enough that continuing past then isn't an issue, anyway.

It depends on the character and on the canon. Generally speaking I try to review more rather than less, because little points of worldbuilding can come up when you don't expect, but if it's a huge fuckoff long canon or if I'm reviewing for a character who only shows up occasionally, I'm more likely to narrow down and look for their specific moments.

Re: Canon reviewing

(Anonymous) 2018-05-13 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Depends on the canon, if it's a movie I'll watch the whole thing (probably a few times), if it's a show I'll just try to watch the relevant episodes/eps that I don't remember very well.

Books I'll read the whole thing, if it's a book series I'll read up to canon point or just what I can't remember well. Games I'll just read a wiki article or whatever, I don't have time to replay games sadly.

Translating powers to DWRP

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm thinking about bringing in a character that has magic; they're a very DnD-inspired character but I'm still trying to figure out how to shift that over to DWRP-style game mechanics since I've never played a character with these kinds of powers before. I might be over thinking it but I want to be careful not to make my character one that can magic the shit out of everything or make people feel like something they did came out of left field. Should I nerf them, should I list every single thing they're capable of, give a general outline instead etc.

Re: Translating powers to DWRP

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
i play a dnd character and tbh i tailor their abilities to each thread. if i don't want them to solve an issue/nuke someone outright, i'll come up with excuses as to why they aren't just dominating the thread. for example, maybe they're facing someone with a totally different fighting style than they've dealt with before, so they're thrown off and the fight is made more even that way, or maybe they don't want to cause a lot of damage so they hold back. like with any super powerful character, i think the key to everything is communicating with other players and discussing what you both want from the thread. but then again, i'm the type that has more fun when my character is struggling and i really don't enjoy when their powers give them an unbeatable advantage.

Re: Translating powers to DWRP

(Anonymous) 2018-05-16 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I play a canon character who's magically op and what I do is mostly stick to a school of magic. my guy might have used magic across the board in canon but we mostly see him using nature-based magic, ergo I have him mostly use nature-based magic in game. likewise, it's best to definitely establish what they CANNOT do and stick to it/bring it up as needed. it can be something like 'my wizard can't use telepathy or magical shields' or 'my wizard can't punch', but emphasizing what your wizard cannot do and how there are distinct ways he can't magic himself out of a plot will do a lot to make him not look op

the main thing you'll want to do is communicate with everybody and realize that your character can't magic their way out of everything. the plot'll nerf them occasionally: how you icly deal with that is up to you. likewise, though your character might be able to put someone under a hallucination, if player b doesn't want their character under a hallucination, you're going to have to do something different.

also, this is obvious, but don't rely too heavily on d&d mechanics. it's no use to the mods if you try to explain things as 'the creature takes 5d8 hit die of sleep', you'll want to phrase things in a way that aren't so mechanics heavy and a lot more prose-friendly.

kylo ren | star wars

(Anonymous) 2018-05-19 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't gravitate towards villains so this is a really strange pick for me. Just looking for any advice, general or otherwise.

Re: kylo ren | star wars

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Having played him before, there really is no way to overdo his whiny and insecure angst. How mommy and daddy didn't love him enough, how he'll never be Vader 2.0, how Snoke was the worst substitute master/father figure ever, how killing Han will likely haunt him for the rest of his life. He is a bundle of issues and is emotionally stunted, so it's not out of character to play him with the mindset more of a teenager than the adult he is. If you take him post The Last Jedi, this trait has faded in a minimal amount, but is still very much present.

Also keep in mind the positive relationships he has the potential to have. He clearly loved his father despite killing him and still loves his mother to some extent. So he is capable of forming loving relationships with people even if he is an abrasive asshole with a caustic personality. You could say this is one of the reasons he latches onto Rey so hard. He sees a great deal of himself in her, knowing if he pushes hard enough, she'll go down the same path, and then he'll have her around forever.

Remember too, the big irony is that he had everything Anakin ever wanted (loving parents who didn't die, surrounded by family who would have given him anything he ever wanted) and threw it away to follow in the footsteps of the man who was miserable from losing all of that. If you get into a game with either characters from the original or prequel timeline, they are likely going to try to give him a swift kick in the ass to give him a dose of reality on what he's been missing out on.

Hope this was helpful, anon!

the above anon has a lot of good points for sure! it's definitely hard to overdo the tantrum factor, and it's good to keep some nuance in your portrayal. kylo ren isn't a good person but he isn't a murder tantrum machine either.

i think something really important to avoid is acting like kylo ren is somehow... Not Ben Solo. they aren't separate entities or personalities. they're one and the same. kylo is ben, there's not one without the other. even if he rejects his old name icly don't be that overinvested guy ooc. it isn't a good look, and kind of makes it seem as if you're trying to write off the harm he's knowingly done.

that might be an etiquette advisement more than characterization.

secret identities

(Anonymous) 2018-05-20 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
apologies in advance if this is more straightforward than i think.

for those of you who have played hero characters whose identities are secret, i was wondering how you've gone about handling this in a game setting. i figure you have to treat their identities separately, same as in canon, but do you end up having to sort of create CR with the same characters, both as the hero and as the civilian? how do you avoid that getting repetitive (ie. meeting the same character twice, etc)?

or do you just out them once the CR progresses enough?

Re: secret identities

(Anonymous) 2018-05-20 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of this depends on what sort of character you play. what helped with me was that my character put on a very different personality when he was in his secret identity. if you've got something like Sailor Moon, Aizawa from MHA, Wonder Woman, or Captain America where the personality is fundamentally the same and the main difference is whether he's wearing a mask or not, that type of character will be played a LOT differently than something like the Scarlet Pimpernel, Batman, the Hulk, or Princess Tutu where there's a radical shift in personality between normal identity & secret identity.

I've played both characters with 'different personality' secret identities and 'it's Character X in a tiny mask with her hair pulled up' secret identities, and it was so much easier creating and balancing CR with the first than the latter. for instance, Character X might like Batman but LOATHE Bruce Wayne, which gives you two different types of CR right off the bat. as for how you go about handling them in the game setting, a lot of it depends on the game in question. if Batman's in an open world game with a large city and a healthy NPC population, the secret identity question would be treated a lot differently than if Batman was in a murdergame or stuck on a ship with only 50-ish people.

I will say that the characters with secret identities that I've played in games for multiple months, I have eventually outed, whether it's just to a few people or to the entire game. which again, the reaction depends on the sort of character you play.

I have no idea if this helps, lmao, but I guess what I'm trying to say is that you're going to need to pay attention to the type of character as well as the environment they're in to best navigate secret identity nonsense

Re: secret identities

(Anonymous) 2018-05-20 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
above anon has very good points!

a thing i want to add is that it depends A LOT on the type on game and plots you join. will vigilante x be around a lot, making open logs and generally saving the city every day? that will make it more difficult and add the handling double cr thing. but for example, in my game right now we have someone that transforms only every now and then for special plots, so the rest of the game has her as OH THAT MYSTERIOUS PRESENCE except for a few people that are close cr.

also, does your character have a reason to keep their secret identity, well, secret? this also depends on the character and game. i play someone that hides their powers in canon but in every jamar i've played him so far, as soon as he arrives, he realizes powers are cool in the setting so he doesn't hide for more than a week.

Mr. Wrench | Fargo

[personal profile] deafhitman 2018-05-27 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Alright, so I just picked up Mr. Wrench here from Fargo because what is self-control when binge watching a series? For those of you canon-blind, he's a deaf hitman, and while he can read lips to some extent, he mostly signs with his best friend/partner Mr. Numbers translating for him. While I think I've got his personality mostly down, it's the intricacies of playing a deaf character that I'm looking for help with. I do know some basic ASL since I deal with deaf and hearing-impaired customers quite a bit in my job, but I don't know much about deaf culture and the like.

Anyone got advice for playing him or just playing a deaf character in general?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-28 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not an expert but my coworker (immediate team) had a cochlear implant so there's some things we make sure to do to make stuff easier for her.

- When you address a Deaf/HOH person you speak directly to them, not to their interpreter, if they have one. This is both polite and makes it easier for them to read lips.

- When someone's communicating DO NOT BLOCK THE LINE OF SIGHT TO THE INTERPRETER/WHO THE DEAF PERSON IS LIPREADING. This happens all the time and is super frustrating.

- You don't need to speak slowly but you do need to speak clearly for someone who is lipreading you. My coworker sometimes asks me to repeat myself if I don't do this well enough, because she thought I said something insane. (Sometimes this can be especially hilarious.)

- Deaf/HOH people are especially sensitive to vibration. However, in loud/active places (such as an office) this can be overstimulating and it'll make it easier to focus if they're in a quieter place with less traffic. My coworker sits in a corner with her good ear facing the wall.

- One of the possible phone settings for "ring" includes the camera's flash blinking repeatedly. My coworker has her phone set on "flash" and sometimes gets messages from her husband. If I notice the flash, I've automatically gotten into the habit of checking to see whether she noticed it, and if not I'll tell her I saw her phone go off.

- It is entirely possible to NOT KNOW that someone is Deaf/HOH if they don't tell you. My coworker was so good at lipreading/catching when people were talking to her that it took several months for me to realize she had a a disability at all.

Re: Mr. Wrench | Fargo

I suggest googling Deaf culture. If he's born Deaf you likely should be capitalizing the D.

There are things I could suggest but I'm not sure if they'd contradict your canon and would depend on how Deaf people are treated there. For instance Deaf people have a different sense of humor than hearing people and their conversations and tone can often come off as harsh because of it. Deaf people also make exaggerated facial expressions as part of communicating with other Deaf people/when using ASL. They might not do this with people who aren't Deaf but that's an individual thing. The same as whether or not a Deaf person verbalizes while signing is an individual thing.

Re: Mr. Wrench | Fargo

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
i'm completely canonblind so idk how much of my experiences line up with the character/canon but what i learned going to a school with a big deaf community:

- deaf people tend to be very blunt when signing. it just takes too long to beat around the bush and compliment sandwich any criticism, they're more likely to just straight up tell you when something is bad or could be improved. bluntness in general is also just kind of a cultural thing, they're less uptight about things a lot of hearing people would consider too "personal".

- some deaf people are okay with hearing aids and implants and like having stuff to help them function in a largely hearing world. some really really do not like them and are perfectly happy being deaf and don't want to fix it. entirely depends on the person.

- you cannot be super stoic and cool while signing. you just can't. facial expressions are a big part of a lot of signing.

- deaf people are not as quiet as tv and movies make them out to be. depends on the person, but some make tons of little noises (grunting and stuff like that) without realizing it.

- it's considered way more obnoxious to make a big deal out of cutting through a deaf conversation than to just pass through quickly. yeah, don't linger in between people trying to talk when they need to see each other, but making a big production out of trying to squeeze behind someone instead of between them or ducking below their hands/faces while you walk between them is super annoying, they can handle losing line of sight for the half a second it takes you to pass and won't be annoyed.

- same goes for getting someone's attention. a little tap or waving a little in someone's peripherals is enough. grabbing or jabbing someone or waving your hand right in theirface is rude.

- the deaf kids at my school had the loudest parties. those who are HoH like the music louder so they can hear better, and those who are entirely deaf like it being louder so they can feel the vibrations.

- deaf people can have a silent conversation from opposite ends of a room. this isn't a cultural thing so much as a thing i was super jealous of. lots of deaf kids just openly talking to their friends on the other side of the class without the teacher noticing.

Domino

(Anonymous) 2018-05-27 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. So I came out of Deadpool wanting to know more about Domino. Google-fu gave me bare basics. Where would I begin to look to really learn more about her and get a handle on her? specific comics and what not. And how closely does Deadpool's Domino resemble the comic one, character-wise?

Re: Domino

(Anonymous) 2018-05-27 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH I'd stick to the Domino miniseries if you're just looking for a bit of supplemental info to help you get a bit of background on the original version of the character. She's had 3, one in 1997, one in 2003 (which gives her an origin story), and one this year.

Her other appearances are scattered across about 50 different titles and a few massive crossover events, and tracking them down (especially the older ones) can be tricky and time-consuming, and pretty unnecessary if you're not looking to play the 616 version anyway.

OCs

(Anonymous) 2018-05-29 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
When developing OCs, I've realized I tend to figure out their history first and only then think about their personality, which means that often I only have a loose idea of who they are and nothing about their personalities is as fixed as their histories, which often leaves me with vaguely bland characters.

I'd like to be better about developing interesting characters who aren't quite as reliant on their backstory/history to prop them up. So for those who do write OCs, how do you develop their personalities? What do you start with, how do you fully flesh it out, etc?
