i understand why the mods set up olympia and wyver with neither one obviously "good" or "bad", but it was a double-edged sword, putting virtually all characters in a position where choosing a side wouldn't make any sense, so obviously everyone is going to push for peace instead of encourage a war where neither side has a point.

this has been my biggest problem with the game to date. not only are there only two sides, but there's not really an option to just fuck off and do your own thing outside of it. there's the neutral territory and diplomatic council now, but even then, they've said wyver and olympia both will get pissy if people try to build anything resembling a village/living area outside of either town. so you're still in a 'pick one' situation. neither side is doing much in terms of trying to lure people to join them, and both have been outright hostile to new parties, so i'm finding it incredibly hard to find an incentive to do more than keep my character's head down and try to play in the game without being too active in the politics, because as far as i can see, there's no real push for it and no draw to picking one side over another.

i'm pretty sure they plan on opening up other areas, because outside of natha, wyver, and olympia rep points, i remember seeing listings for other faction rep points, so they clearly have a plan for it, but as someone that's been in the game over half a year with people in it longer than that, it would be super nice if they actually opened those up already if those were in the making. i wouldn't want everything shoved in all at once like a flash in the pan, but i agree that it seems to be really oddly timed and either too much crammed in at once or too much downtime with nothing to do. and that's when you get people focusing on sol stuff too much and it carries over to 'but i had plans' when actual plot comes up that conflicts with their sol playing.

there's never going to be a war at this rate unless the mods force it to happen.

and so far, no characters in game have any in game incentive to be involved. i could easily see everyone just hieing off to the woods and waiting it out unless there's magic/forced incentive, and that might be hard to play.

what a waste of some decent world building

There's incentive to be found, it's just a matter of finding it/having it be ic for your character. I was able to use the kidnapping plot to finally push my character into supporting Olympia, not because they're against Wyver, but because the thought of the extremists gaining control in the event of an uprising/war is a scary one, and they want to protect the new home they've made.

So many characters seem to think that making a third city is still a viable option for some reason, and a lot are icly encouraging other characters to refuse to choose sides. I think if it were treated as something more organic rather than seemingly engineered by the natha to support one side or the other, it'd be easier for characters to just naturally fall into supporting one city.

But hey, we've only unlocked a tiny portion of the world map. Maybe we'll still get a war, it just won't be between Wyver and Olympia?

i'll start off by saying that i really am glad you found a way to use what had happened to find a way to work towards gaining a perspective or choice for your character. that's not a small thing and i'm really glad for you. i'll continue by saying that the same might not be as easy for other people, particularly for new characters that haven't 'made a home', or ones that aren't looking to 'make a home' and are contrary by nature. half of the complaints i see by people on my timeline or in chats revolve around the fact that there just isn't a reason for most characters to do anything. they wake up on a station and may or may not have people in pods to protect/care for/hate. then they're not allowed to stay up on the station, which i think a lot would prefer to do, and are instead told to go down to a planet which over time has become increasingly hostile towards 'new faces' in this build up towards a potential conflict/war. older characters might have cause to pick a side out of just having been in one city or another long enough or being involved in quests or guilds on either side. but new characters and any new ones that join after are going to have no reason whatsoever. and the more that the conflict rises, the harder it's going to be for new characters to settle in or find a reason to pick a side, if that's the angle the mods are going for.

i'll use eachdraidh as an example, because that's the only game i've also been in that was political with opposing sides. you come into the game with an incentive. you're already part of a court/side. you were capable of building up reputation, earning favors, and gaining territory/titles. there was way more set up for just having a reason to do shit, and even with that in mind, there were still people that opted to lose their shards or play sort of double-sides.

i'm not trying to crap on the game. i like the set up and the world building, but insofar as trying to convince a character to 'choose wisely', there just aren't enough in game factors to do that. some characters can, and i'm glad for the ones that do, but it can also be really hard to find a reason for a character that gives no fucks to magically pick a side and give a fuck.

maybe you should consider dropping. i'm not saying that to be mean. it genuinely sounds like the game isn't a fit for you or the character you're playing.

i never said i wasn't having fun or that i wanted to drop. i'm voicing a problem that i've heard from a lot of people. it's not just me or my character. the game itself is mostly fine, but as it's been pointed out, this is an aspect of it that can make it hard to play.

you might not be trying to be 'mean', but you're not actually being helpful if you're suggesting dropping a game because of a valid point about a problem aspect of the game that a lot of people have. you want half the playerbase to drop because a lot of them agree that there's no incentive or drive for any character to pick a side? it's a discussion, anon.

every time someone posts crit on el nysa, the same white knights manifest out of thin air. are you guys ok? go touch some grass please.

the el nysa playerbase has some of the wankiest, meanest, rudest mean girl bitches in all of dwrp. it's not surprising they turn up in droves the second someone might even slightly suggest that game has problems because it means the players might be causing the problems, and see point #1.

suggesting you drop when a game isn't interesting to you or pinging you anymore is a perfectly helpful suggestion, don't be a rude dick about it.

it's also been mentioned down below that this game has never been advertised as a "plot heavy" game. you came into the game expecting that because other players were saying that. if this is truly becoming a point of contention with you and one that continues to bother you enough to discuss it on an anon comm, yeah. consider looking for another game because this one may not be a fit for what you want and that's okay. not all games will be a fit for every player.

so the problem is, the setup is uninviting for new characters ic and there's no ooc coordination to help new players get involved?

and that nobody is offering the easy fix of player characters banding together to make a initial home for new characters to get their bearings in

something along those lines. the last batch came in just after a really rough patch with kidnappings and torture and death and there wasn't much in terms of welcoming through the game for them just on an 'everyone's on high alert' basis. the app around before that had people being shot down mid-transit from the station and then just 'okay, you're in hostile territory and you have to make it work. don't get dead'.

there just wasn't any in game incentive and there didn't seem to be any player groups willing to say 'hey, welcome to hell, here's the layout' or anything to help guide new characters/new players. part of the problem is that it feels like so much cr and incentive lies with ooc player/player relations and people just handwaving how they got from a to b just so they can have their chars do c. and if you don't have any friends or familiar faces in the game, you can wind up trying to reach out and getting nowhere because a lot of logs are closed (which is fine) and they've also been slowing down in terms of being posted at all, so newbies have to really push themselves out there to try to get cr or hope that an open post/log comes up they can tag into.

like i said before, it's not a bad game and no, i'm not trying to crap on it. i'm just trying to point out a few problems i've seen and been talking about with others that maybe some people aren't aware of because they've been there a long time and have a solid cr circle and don't need to fight to find something to do in game or a reason to be invested.

which, again, falls into the ooc reasons for doing things and getting rewards as opposed to ic reasons, which is what my whole point is focused around. oocly, everyone has enough reasons to pick a side and get a dragon to ride or a unicorn or something. or nifty powers or houses. but icly, you're shoving characters into an increasingly hostile environment and sort of expecting them to just pick a side because...? because why?

oocly, the game is run very well and there's lots of communication and people making plans. icly, there's just no incentive, and that's where the lump sum of the problems come from. the mods clearly have a story they want to direct people towards and i really want to get there, but it's just hard when icly, your character has zero reason.

That's true, I get you now. I think i always saw the natha saving your loved ones (or whatever you picked) as a reason to play along with them. Which in turn is a reason to investigate and get involved, even if your commitment is shaky at first. But I agree it's a little tenuous sometimes.

play along with the natha, yes, but the natha don't favor one side over the other either, and want characters to 'help', or whatever. war is not helping.
