Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Making icons and then doing a good reread and then...well, I have my eye on a game.

What's a reasonable turnaround for mod emails? I sent off a here's-my-test-drive-post-am-I-getting-any-worldbuilding-majorly-wrong email two days ago, and I'm jittering over it.

It's entirely possible that I'm just being impatient/insecure because I'm excited about the game. >.> Apps won't even open for like another ten days.

I don't have time to mod a game right now but this looks really awesome, anon, I hope someone jumps on it. I'd app in a heartbeat.

The game definitely has a very strange pace, in that it'll have a lot of really intense plots all right next to each other, then a month and a half of nothing but low-key mingle or exploring events.

That said, I feel like the game just shouldn't be advertised as plot-heavy anymore. Players definitely can have an impact on the setting (which is why things appear to be moving towards a more peaceful existence between Wyver and Olympia), and sometimes major plot events happen that can't just be ignored (the Olympia evacuation, the city riots, the recent kidnapping event), but ultimately it's all just your character learning to cope in a turbulent new world.

If you want more than just your character getting a job or sitting around a campfire on the beach, you* have to be really proactive in how you choose to use the setting. The mods give players a lot of freedom, you just have to get out there and take what they offer to create your own conflict and plot. Set up some quest threads, hunt down rogue extremists, go on an adventure into the forests around Olympia or Wyver and run into some monsters, use the locations page and plan a day at one of the random businesses around Olympia or Wyver, go up to Thesa and do a battle simulation in another world.

Of course, this all depends on what drew you to the game in first place. I'm more hooked by the setting than the plot, so the game has been great for me. But I can see how someone who came here hoping for major plot and warring factions would be disappointed with the game so far, since war and choosing sides has only been a looming threat rather than an actual part of the game.

(*this is general advice, I'm not implying that you personally are not putting in the effort, since it can be very hit and miss depending on who you're tagging too)

Thanks anon!

I missed when all the casts were going around apparently so i get super excited when I get a tag from someone (I have a Momoi journal too I've been throwing around). I'm glad the fandom doesn't seem totally dead!

You're being very impatient. It's been two days. Chill.

Also I really don't think the mods are going to care if you got some minuscule world-building detail wrong in a tdm. Asking them to proof read your post for you is kinda nuts, anon.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
... Well, that is answering my question in a way, so thanks for your time.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
This.

Is TDM post approval in the rules, OP? It's not how most people go about that.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Nnnno, I just don't really know how TDMs are supposed to work. Some of them seem like they eventually become game canon.

I'm also somebody coming back to DWRP after years away (and I think my original games were pretty idiosyncratic?). There's a lot of jargon and a lot of etiquette I truly don't get, and when I think I've messed up, I try to test my assumptions.

In this case I guess I did the wrong thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
same here. i thought it was because i play a weird character but maybe it's just normal?

Flatviewer here, I don't know why I thought this would be anything but sarcastic

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I think it is reasonable to expect a response within a couple of days, even if that response is just an acknowledgement that they have read it and need more time to discuss with other mods. The exception would be if a timeframe for responses is actually given, then wait for that before poking.

But I wouldn't poke them about a lack of response until it's been closer to a week with absolutely no response.

But agreed with other folks, you probably could do the post without it. If you're impatient or concerned, maybe try posting it in your journal or on a plurk paste and have some friends in the game look it over.

And hey, if you mess something up, no biggie. You could just choose to not have that be game canon. Most games require both players involved to agree to it being game canon if they allow TDM threads to carry over.

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
That's fair! Yeah, it's not generally the done thing - TDMs are typically not considered game canon, so if you slip up with setting details, there's no real harm to it. Obviously you want to at least put in a solid effort to getting it right, but don't sweat it.

Ohhhh sorry, I linked to my test drive post when I emailed the mods. I had already made it at the time. So that part's done!

Thanks for the advice about response timeframe. And the TDM explainer. I guess it all is pretty intuitive, it just feels like a lot at once.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-12 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
because it gives you a variety of mini settings for every planet you visit, and allows you to play with all kinds of genres and events. you can have a more cracky planet, a more fantasy planet, a more spooky planet. you can have shenanigans with powers from machines but also from magic races and alien elves, weird cultures, etc.

basically, variety is nice and easier to keep going that stuck in one city.
