Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.

Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Re: secret identities

I think it depends a lot on the game, the type of masked hero the character is, and the specific character. The one I'm most familiar with playing is DC and Marvel heroes, so I'll go from that angle.

There are a few ways you can take it. In a game where people live normal lives where they get jobs, I can see a lot of heroes keeping up the ruse because they have to work and get by but who knows who will show up. In that case, it'd be really easy for them to keep up their old patterns and establish a civilian ID alongside the hero ID so their civilian ID back home is still protected. Some might even go double duty and set up their hero ID and a fake civilian ID. (Tim Drake is a good example of a character who'd potentially even set up a fake civilian ID ala "Alvin Draper" for himself in the game setting rather than using his real civilian ID.) Whether they present to the network as their hero self or civilian self is up to you as a player but a lot of characters would probably put forth their hero face for any plotty action stuff, so if the network is used to coordinate that, they'd probably treat it like a superhero comm and only communicate as their superhero ego. That does mean having them meet and interact with people as either ego and developing CR for both, but you don't necessarily need to have to establish dual CR with everyone. Look at how comic books work. Some heroes interact with the same individual in both IDs while pretending to be different people but sometimes their relationship is only in on ID or the other. A lot of superheroes in DC have a "professional" relationship with others and even friendships before they ever even interact with each other's civilian IDs. So you don't necessarily have to go double duty with everyone, unless it'd be interesting that way? Sometimes they'd just only have one relationship with a character using only the face they met them with.

Going onto scenario 2: A game that doesn't have a setup where people live on a normal planet or something and are maybe crammed together in a small tiny space, like a spaceship, under extreme circumstances. This is where it gets tricky because it gets even more character specific. The thing to remember is that superhero characters don't do the secret ID thing for funsies. It's not (usually) because they find juggling lives and cloak and dagger bullshit to be fun. At the end of the day, it's about a) not getting their normal RL lives disrupted by their heroics. You think doxxing is bad irl, imagine if you're a superhero with a bad rep ala Spider-man, you will never hold down a job again if your secret ID is outed. (RIP, Speedball's civilian life). And b) protecting their loved ones.

There is always a risk that their secret ID being outed in a DWRP will get it outed back home. The potential reasons are endless: What if someone from the same world that learned it in the dwrp because they were careless about it blabs about it to the wrong person when they get back home? What if their archnemesis shows up and learns it from a rando in the game and then goes back home later? What is the game's npc overseers take their ID and pass it to unsavory parties back home? What if the entire game scenario is some weird supervillain hologram ruse that was designed to make them spout out their secret ID and they're actually still back home? Many of the characters would be trying to avoid letting their guards down because they don't want someone going to their houses and murdering their families among other things, so you have to figure out what the line of trust is for each character.

For instance, I can see Sailor Scouts or Ladybug and Chat Noir not freaking out so much about it. They're from more lighthearted canons and might be enticed to be honest sooner than later, especially if it means they can stop trying to run off to transform somewhere private. But some might retain their secret ID through the entire game if they're not forcibly outed by something, especially from canons like DC where heroes' loved ones have been murdered, just because it's the only way keep control over who knows. You can bet your buns that even in a smaller and more intimate game most pullpoints for Batman would have him at least trying to go around in full cowl 24/7 and trying to hide where he sleeps so no one can see him uncowled until the game hits endgame. Or you might have a character like Conner Kent, who didn't even get a civilian ID until recently, running around as "Kon-el" or "Superboy" because he's actually more comfortable in his superhero ID anyway and because he wants to protect Clark's secret identity and Ma Kent and Lois Lane.

In a situation where they need to be their heroic selves all the time, where it's too close quarters to maintain a civilian ID, some heroes will just stay their hero ID for the duration. We see this a lot in superhero canons. When they're thrown into a strange situation, most heroes go into hero mode and only go by their hero ID for the duration. For some characters, it might take extreme circumstances or people earning their trust over a long period to get them to out themselves, and even then it might only be to individuals at first. Especially since they can still relate to people to make friendships without naming specifics like their true name or exact home city. "I live on a farm with some really nice folks that I see as an aunt and uncle and go to high school." "I'm a reporter back home and I grew up on a farm." "I'm an ex-air force pilot and freelance cad with unhealthy relationships with my purple exes."

tl;dr it's all down to the specific circumstances and the individual character. Think about what they'd do in that specific game setting to protect their home lives and home loved ones and where they'd unclench or see the effort as pointless, how much freedom they even have to create two separate IDs, and which ID they'd be most likely to stick with if they could only reasonably have one (civilian vs. hero) and go from there.

This got long, whoops, but this is the advice section and I'm lazy, here have an essay.

I'm not super interested in it, but I'm intrigued by Mangagamer's pickup of Tsui Yuri. The parent company for it owns Black Cyc so I'm wondering if it would be possible to get some of those titles. Unfortunately, the ones I'm interested in may be too old.

i haven't played in a game for yeeeeaaars because my psls and meme threads are so ding dang good. i don't even think i could go back to playing in games now if i wanted to. like some of the above anons, kywtp and rp with me have been incredibly good to me over the years. ive also had good luck in memes in finding rp partners who are willing to jump to psls with me

pros:
- like i mentioned above, play exactly what you want with who you want. you have the freedom to be exactly as selective as you want to be in any way you want
- being able to plot out entire character arcs and finish storylines with someone you mesh with is a fantastic feeling
- play any kinky garbage filth you want without other people judging or needing to worry about staying ~ic~
- as long as you're good about communicating and finding people who match your pace, never having the pressure of game tags or scheduled events that might not mesh with your rl schedule

cons:
- people can be flaky as shit, and it can take a while to find people who are reliable and consistent and whose writing and characters mesh up with yours. persistence is key, and not getting discouraged when things don't pan out. i've gotten 7 flakes in a row, followed by 3 bites that turned into long term rp partners/friends. luck plays a big part
- if you're the kind of person who prefers the structure, setting, and prompts provided by a game, changing to a format where you literally make up every single thing as you go can be pretty daunting. you have to be proactive and able to push threads forward
- you might have a harder time getting bites with certain types of characters. it's not even necessarily a matter of popularity, but playing an ~attractive~ twenty-or-thirty something character who is down to smut will open a lot more doors for you tbh

reading page tweak?

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Is there any way to make my reading page go back further than the standard 14 days? Like some little trick I can add to the coding of my journal maybe?

Anons, I also need some advice on something... There's this player that a couple years ago I used to be really tight with rp-wise, we at any point had half a dozen scenes gong between our characters for about half a year, maybe a little more, and then one day they just disappeared on me. No PMs, no tags, just one day they were gone. And because I didn't want to look clingy, I never PMed them.

And now I see one of their journals on a meme and I'm not sure what to do. Tag them and start fresh? PM them and see if they'd like to pick up where we left off/start fresh? Take their disappearance as a hint and leave them alone? Or should I just take rhllornons advice and sacrifice them to the lord of light**?

[**Dramatization. Will not happen, sorry rhllornon.]]

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Shoot them a PM and ask if they want to pick things up again/start something new. If they dropped completely off the face of the internet, chances are good that it had absolutely nothing to do with you personally. It doesn't hurt to reach out, as long as you're willing to take a no gracefully if it turns out they don't want to play with you now they're back.

wanting to play a character I played years ago but being woefully behind on canon

(slight variation: wanting to play a character from a long-running canon at an early point before said canon becomes convoluted/messy/fucking terrible)

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
actually this happened to me...I wasn't tight with them, no, but they disappeared one day and I went on with life and then I saw them again on a meme. I happened to have one of their old notifs and shockingly realized it had been 2 years since they last PMed me.

didn't PM, just tagged them again. got enthusiastic tagbacks and eventually a PM saying they'd lost a laptop and couldn't replace it so they just stopped RPing until life improved. this could be you, anon. just tag 'em. if they start up some fresh RP, the lines of communication are open.

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm on the other side of this! It'd make my day if anyone I knew before I left wrote me to say they still want to thread together. I felt awful about leaving the way I did, especially since I was crazy about each and every person I was lucky enough to play with then. (Which started the very drama that forced me to leave in the first place... It's a long story.) 99.99999% chance they're going to be thrilled to hear from you again, so please do reach out.

it wasn't about ships, but this general situation happened to me too, and it played out in the same general way as this anon described it. my rp partner and i clearly hashed out this one thing, and when the time came they did the literal opposite without warning. this anon has good advice.

Re: age difference, isolation, underage, m/f (f/f?)

[personal profile] akasock 2018-05-21 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be interested in the f/f variety, if you're up for playing the older woman. Have a character I think would work pretty well. Hope to hear from you!

(Anonymous) 2018-05-21 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
i did this about a year and a half ago! it was a really good choice for me alongside removing myself from rp social media. it freed up a lot of time for me to focus on other things and also do threads that i really enjoy without having to worry about the comment count or other people flaking out on cr plans

folks above are right though: it's difficult to find a consistent rp partner or partners these days, so if you don't have someone already be prepared for a period of disappointment alongside the gems you might find.
