maybe what it is is that i'm disappointed in with the events in particular is that they don't seem to go anywhere. we haven't got any sort of resolution for the last dream maze event with the monsters. there were like, two giant mazes where people wander around events in a row. we've got a bit of plot from the prophet in this fears one, but it's about npcs i don't care about.

it feels like it's consistently always been about the npcs and their story more than it is the players. and when it is about players, it's always about the same three or four. yes, it's because they do search requests - i've tried to get into exploring and helping out and doing plot stuff but i always, always hit a wall or get left out. i'm not a newbie, i apparently don't have the creativity to get any sort of metaplot, so i don't know how to continue to do it.

i'm not saying they haven't responded to crit. they have, and there's been some great changes with the search requests/movements/mechanics part of it. maybe i'm the only one left in the game that's still dissatisfied! i know there are people who left because they had the same issues, but they're not in game anymore.

i did read the whole thing. i'm saying i know a lot of players were still burned by that experience, and that even though you just said "that doesn't dismiss the frustration" your whole paragraph still sounds like you're dismissing the frustration.

an actual suggestion i've gotten for my depression, from somebody who doesn't have any chronic health problems.

you're bounsweet.

I'm sorry. That was not my intention at all. I do understand where people are coming from and how it would get annoying to try so many different things in so many buildings and come up with nothing. That's not something easily forgotten especially if you have been in the game for a long time.

yeah, same here. whenever i hear about the new test drive going up i think "oh, i should check that out and tag some people" but i never do. i will try to be better about this, too.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
it's alright, i appreciate that you're not trying to dismiss my concerns.

there's been that shake up of things that winter caused, but i think that that's still vague? what did she shake up? where do we go? do we just have to search all of the old areas thoroughly? we've seen how hard it is to get everybody to work together to do a massive collaborative search, recently. that's another time sink that honestly, with the slow pace of the game as it is, we don't have time for if we're going to ever get a good ending.

as it is right now i don't even know if that applies still because ecks and castiel found that keycard, which now we have to wait nine ic days for, in order to get to the gate and see if it even does anything. so it's more waiting.

"oh, i heard you're coming down with a cold? take a bunch of vitamin c!"

bitch vitamin c does literally shit all for colds, flus, or any kind of illness. it's bullshit pseudoscience placebo stuff, and yet, no matter how many times i tell people "no, i'm not gonna do something that's going to do Literally Nothing for my illness," i get a bunch of "oh but just try it anyway. maybe your doctor is totally wrong and i know so much more about curing colds than they do."

adding on to this as i think more: i dm on the side, and one of the big rules that i follow is that everybody gets to have the chance to be in the spotlight. while that's easier in small, 5-8 people games, it's also something i think you should strive for in a big game like this too, as much as possible.

if they're not searching correctly for the very specific thing that you want them to find, then broaden your sights. don't railroad. throw some cool plot at them. And it doesn't have to be huge, just literally throw them like, a sd card that can open a trapdoor across town, which gives you enough time to come up with something cool and horrifying that might be under there, like a trapped anomaly, or a trap in general, something high risk. Give them something you have no idea what the use is, like a crowbar with an engraving they can't read, and see what idea they can come up with on their own and quietly steal it as AH YES, YOU'VE FIGURED OUT MY PUZZLE. See what they do with it, instead of making them specifically search it out and get frustrated when they can't meet the exact wording or standard that you're trying to meet.

this game is very similar to a huge tabletop game and i think a lot of the setting still hasn't gotten to show off the most horrifying bits of potential it has.

i know that's a lot of work, but it'd make things feel so much more inclusive, i guess. like everybody has a shot at making a difference in this town, not just the people who search every couch cushion, or people who come up with huge, elaborate plans to test the anomalies, complete with maps and diagrams.

is that selfish to ask for? as a dm i'd be more than willing to do that on the side, but that's just me.

+1

I agree. One of the big issues I have is that I feel the mods are too narrow in their planning. It feels too much like an on rails RPG and not enough like the sandbox-y horror game they billed it as.

Besides, not every player is going to be good at puzzles. I mean this in the more general sense, but also that some players just might not be good at the puzzles Mel and Cee make. Shutting those players out is stupid imo. There should be more opportunities for plot than just "solve this puzzle" or "endlessly search everything until something sticks".

Canons with villain protagonists (or villains that aren't the protagonist but get a significant amount of focus). Bonus points if said villains aren't entirely redeemed but also aren't entirely heartless-monster level (basically, a villain that is still a villain but would be capable of developing positive close CR in a DWRP game setting...)

Any medium is fine.

i have people from asoiaf/got, bioshock, and dragon age, so if you're itching for any of that, shoot me a pm here and let me know what you'd like! i'm into the same kind of thread concepts you mentioned, so this could be really fun!

It is still vague and there is still so much that has not been uncovered about where we go from here. I, too, think at this point the old areas having key items actually works against us because like you said we don't have a lot of time remaining like we used to. Going back and searching them now or waiting for the item to be brought into play like the keycard Ecks and Castiel found's a time sink. Plus whatever else we might end up having to do once that fence is unlocked. It's even worse if it means going back to another old area. That's not even accounting for the difficulty of coordinating everyone to unlock a puzzle if we have to.

I think this is where it would have been a good idea if there were a lot more things to uncover and have everyone do in the meantime and if the game was fresh and new but with the path being so linear as people focus on what little bites come from searches and the game getting closer and closer to end game, I agree that it makes it hard to believe that we'll see to its good end. So, this just hurts the momentum of the game.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
and don't get me wrong, i appreciate that they took the time to put key items in old areas, but maybe it should have been a button to press, or something that would unlock the area from a distance, rather than another keycard that just two characters get to cart across the map.

maybe like there's a button in every zone, and you have to have a whole bunch of characters spread out and search buildings to press those buttons (and give the characters an idea of which buildings they should search) so that the industrial zone opens up further! that'd include a lot more people, and you can definitely make it so that more than one person per zone gets to help.

i appreciate the effort, but it still ends up being a linear, only two people get to participate type of thing.

relative newbie to the game here and i honestly didn't realize that the calendar months dont match up. there is so much damn world building info to keep track of and it seems an easy thing to miss. I probably would have gone months without ever knowing if I hadn't seen this and then gone to look again.

maybe if people getting details wrong about a super detailed setting bothers you, you could make a quick guide or something to the major differences / things people get wrong like that for those of us who haven't memorized everything yet.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it does end up linear. But the button idea is actually a good one! That way, it would still mean adding things to the old areas but it wouldn't mean all the time sink of an IC week of waiting for character/s to get to where they need to go and back. It's close to how the keys ended up being used in the end but without actually needing to go all the way over to retrieve the key items. Instead it would be everyone just searching and finding the buttons.

The only issue there would still come from whoever ended up, say, having to go all the way downtown. That's a long way to go to and go back. I would really think it would be better for the mods to have a distance limit. So for example, we're in the Industrial District now. It would be better to limit the distance to maybe be at most Residence II. Do you see what I'm saying?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-17 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, i'm not arguing with you. we're on the same page, i think, i agree with everything you've said here, especially with the distance limit. still, if there were characters already heading down that way, or if there are characters in that specific area, it might be a good idea to let them have some sort of way to actually influence the plot in the area they're in.

i don't actually know where everybody in the game is location wise! it's hard to keep track of. but yeah. good point.

- tentatively recommend the anime/manga akatsuki no yona. the "villain" does some pretty awful stuff, but has a lot of complex motives that get expanded upon, and is a smart, friendly character who would get along just fine with most people in a game setting

- dr. horrible's sing-along blog

- bungo stray dogs has various villainous characters, including a whole gang of mafia members, who get a lot of screen time an focus

This actually sounds like it might be a job for Drakengard 3! You've got morally questionable characters right and left, and even if the protagonist's goals might not be as evil as advertised, she's still NOT a good person. She might at least be able to hold a conversation with people who aren't being obstacles, I think, and she does have a heart somewhere in there.

Highly recommend you watch or read a Let's Play instead of playing it yourself, though, because this is a Taro Yoko game and his Drakengard shenanigans can be described as evil in their own right.

idk what your genre of choice is, but if you're looking for quick reads and enjoy horror, steven king's short stories/novellas are a satisfying way to spend an afternoon. my favorite collections are everything's eventual and different seasons, and i've heard good things about full dark no stars but i haven't had a chance to pick it up. if you could tell us what you're looking for you might be able to get more specific recs.
