anyone else enjoying the netflix series?

I'm up to the last two eps and I'm enjoying it so far. Josephine's arc was a bit formulaic, not really any fault of the actors though.

Might be in the minority, but I enjoyed his Count Olaf far, far more than NPH's. I did enjoy the series, though.

wasn't expecting to be into nph as olaf after the previews, but i warmed up to him pretty quickly! definitely missed jim carrey in certain parts, though, particularly in the reptile room.

overall though i thought it was preeeetty close to perfect.

this is basically how i feel. i went in pessimistic and was pleasantly surprised.

still not happy about patrick warburton as lemony though. he's also better than i expected (who knew he could actually turn in a restrained performance?) but he's missing the bleak moroseness that makes lemony such a fun narrator, and it just didn't work imo. :( i still enjoyed the series but that was way more jarring to me than nph as olaf.

can't stand NPH anyway, so i guess it's a double plus one. really glad to hear the series is excellent/doing well though, asoue was one of my favorites when i was younger.

i wouldn't go that far, but i'd take a petition to stop NPH from singing. it makes sense for Olaf, who is a bad actor, but it drags the theme song down something awful.

This version of Uncle Monty was absolutely precious. I loved him.

It's precious but also one of the more jarring and annoying thing about this version.

Everyone, including Mr. Poe, is more competent, almost want to say smarter, and just good at things then they were in the books and just jarring to see everything that Count Olaf does too fool them work.

Barring the mill thing since Sir was trying to ignore what she was doing.

I didn't read the books, only watched this series. So I guess as an "outsider" to the series, I'm actually surprised you consider them competent at all! Watching this made me feel the frustration of the kids of how dumb, incompetent, and completely useless ALL the adults were. In fact their their incompetence (and selfishness at some points) as adults took me out of the series because it was unbelievable at some points. It isn't so much as a series of unfortunate events but a series of dumbass adults. It makes you root for the kids to hurry and grow up already so that they can really kick ass. Overall I enjoyed the show though.

As someone who's never read the books (they weren't a big thing in my country) I'm curious: Are we supposed to ship Sir and Charles? Like, are they implying some sort of messed up abusive relationship, or...?

Re: A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS

(Anonymous) 2017-01-19 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It is hinted that they are a couple in the books, but never explicitly stated. I don't know if I'd necessarily call it an abusive relationship, but it is relatively one-sided.

I like the series, but somehow the child actors aren't really doing it for me. Their acting really isn't on the level of everyone else on the show and at moments they don't react that well to events and things going on (like the scene on the beach where they hear the news about their parents' death- I understand they were supposed to be in shock, but I would've expected more than just vaguely sad and blank stares) and it's completely throwing me off. I really loved the series since I was a kid and I'm just sad I can't enjoy the show as much.

yeah, they definitely waffled, and i feel like they saw the actress for violet and were just like BASICALLY EMILY BROWNING, WE'RE GOOD. but at least klaus actually did a decent job this time.

Yeah, I hear you, but even child actors can improve. As this is doing very well and is more than likely to get a second season, I'm hoping they'll get some extra coaching during the break. Neither of them have had many past roles and this seems to be the first big project for both of them.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-19 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah! I definitely don't hate their acting, I just think it could do for some improvement - there are definitely moments I love with them, so while I'm not entirely impressed, I'm still really looking forward to the next season.

Loved it. Thought that some of the jokes didn't transfer from the books as well as they could have ("he found himself reading the same sentence over and over" comes to mind), but those are fairly minor quibbles. Love NPH and Warburton, think the child actors are pretty good.

Trying to decide who to make an account for.

I think we can agree that the netflix series is the better adaptation from a story point of view, but what are some things you think the 2004 movie did better? Personally, I preferred the darker aesthetic of the movie.

Re: A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS

(Anonymous) 2017-01-19 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
- aesthetic.

- how they did sunny's talking.

- quality of child acting in general.

- pacing. the tv show might be a better adaptation but I think being too faithful to the books on keeping some scenes dragged it down.

- jim carrey as olaf was a way better combination of comically inept but still scary. NPH never managed the latter, in my opinion.

- I don't mind warburton's narration, but I found having him in the scenes as much as he was more distracting than enjoyable. more just plain voiceover like the movie would've been better. I also liked how the movie never let us see snicket's face, it added more to the mystery of who he was and why he was chronicling everything.
