Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

@cursedimages_2 - tweets a lot of funny/surreal/hideous images, picking up where the original cursedimages left off
@ShittyMario - posts hilarious Mario mechandise/art, much of it bootlegs
@Bodegacats_ - exactly what it says on the tin, pictures of cats in bodegas. bonus points, they don't feel the need to add "witty"/cutesy commentary to every photo.
@NYTMinusContext - quotes from the new york times taken out of context
@BestLJSecrets - curates images from livejournal secrets
@sonic_hedgehog - the official sonic the hedgehog twitter. seriously, follow it. they treat the franchise with all the dignity and seriousness it deserves.
@Histreepix - parody of the multitudes of accounts that post "historical" pictures with inaccurate or outright wrong captions.
@Bootleg_Stuff - exactly what it says on the tin

the problem with that is that we have a limited amount of time for map progress and we're already behind bc of slow search requests.

the narrative events are preventing us from map progress. we lost three ic days for this one, 9 ooc days.

i'd be cool with more backstory if it wasn't helping us fail better

I spent years thinking my main fandom was a wanky cesspool full of drama and pettiness. Come to find out it was just this one person I associated with.

They were constantly hailed as the BEST [x] and always ran out other people trying to play that character with their highlandering. If they thought you were shit they'd gossip about you until nobody wanted to be seen writing with you. They claimed I was their favorite [y] to their [x] but I had to coddle them and always take their side if I wanted tags.

Ironically enough I was the one who helped drive them out by getting tired of it and avoiding them. I even RPd with other versions of that character where I knew they would see. They went ballistic but their tit fit alienated them from everyone and started a chain reaction where the entire RP fandom collectively shunned them and their drama.

It's amazing to check on them in their shiny new fandom and see the exact same bullshit surrounding them, while our side of the pond has chilled dramatically. I honestly can't believe we're the same fandom and we're actually getting newbies now who love how welcoming and helpful we are. They have no idea...

Chocolate pop-tarts. I fail at adulting.

Speaking as a mod myself, it's because sometimes explaining your whole plan for a plot can be even more work than getting someone else to do it for you. If you've developed a ton of flexible outcomes for something based on player input, it can be hard to convey that information to someone else, which often makes it feel like as much work as doing it yourself.

NPCing especially can be difficult to delegate that way, if it's about important stuff with complex information behind it. Unless you're in a situation with the other mods where you're constantly bouncing stuff off of each other, it's really difficult.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
That's fine. The point is more that we were stuck in an empty white maze with nothing but vague footstep sounds and no real goal or instruction for nine ooc days.

If you can't part with the plot or it's too difficult to delegate NPCs, then don't do that. You need to give the players something to do that isn't taking away from but rather contributing to progressing the plot. This actively delayed us getting into a new area. And as far as I know we had all the pieces together to open that new area, we just couldn't put them into place because of the event.

he's on the computer for pretty decent chunks of time. the majority of this time is spent promoting his spirit consultation services (he has his own webpage) or researching various things relating to a job he might have at that particular time. he prints his own posters and does a lot of general photoshopping too, though this is offline

he searches his own name/consultation office on a semi-frequent basis, and hops on any boards discussing these topics to throw in his two cents, either anonymously or with a throwaway account, sometimes posing as multiple people. usually he's trying to improve his image or further promote his services. he has absolutely gotten into multiple flame wars with online trolls

he once joined an MMO, researched all its viable combat strategies thoroughly, created dozens of character accounts using different ips and computers from friends, and trained all these characters with different specialties to their maximum capacities. then he tracked down a spirit haunting that MMO and exorcised it by killing its overleveled and overpowered ass via all of his characters mobbing it simultaneously

all of this is canon

The event plus constantly being behind on search requests lbr. At this point it feels more rare for them to happen when they should than for them to be late.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
idk if you're in the game but one of the other mods made a comment on the recent 'what do we do about searches' post saying exactly that as an explanation for why Mel was the only one doing search requests. when she did, she ended up just having to ask Mel a million questions anyway so it made no functional difference.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
why is the new mod so delete-happy

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
lol considering last december's event was "your character falls into a coma" (if you wanted, it was opt-outable iirc), i think having something low-key over the holidays was the point.

not saying it was a good event, but I'm not at all surprised it wasn't an elaborate one.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
nobody is asking for an elaborate event. we're asking for an event where we get to do something other than wander aimlessly around a maze for nine days with a handwaved conclusion.

let us make our characters hallucinate scary things. let us have the glow eyes chase the prophet eyes around. give us a vague description of a monster that could chase characters around and give them some conflict. let us have traps we could run into. give us emotional effects for our characters.

something to DO other than small talk.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
french toast, over hard eggs, hashbrowns, and a bowl of mixed fruit. breakfast for dinner hell yeah.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Jumping in to say it seems like a lot of people are missing the point and trying to come up with excuses for why the other mods couldn't/wouldn't help or why the event wasn't elaborate. My main argument is this: We were trapped in featureless white rooms/a maze for nine ooc days. It was boring. There were a million things Mel could have done to keep it hands off and make it not boring. Remember the dream event where significant plot stuff was handled by the mods (or just Mel, I guess?) and the rest of us had carte blanche to play around within a set of rules? She could have easily done something like that.

Basically: If the mods didn't want to help that's fine. If Mel wouldn't let them help, okay, but the event was still boring, especially for being so ridiculously long.

since it's about to be that time again, am I the only one that finds it a little offputting to have old players top leveling to the intro log?

it was one thing when it was just the one guide but last month there was al's guide, frisk's guide, the trading post, and natasha introducing herself. Month before it was al's guide, davesprite introducing himself, and the Joker introducing himself.

i get wanting newbies to get caught up right away but it cuts off CR and isn't very welcoming besides.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
how does that cut cr off? it gives the newbies something to ask about.

literally nobody wants to do that 'I'm new oh god what do I do and has anybody seen my castmates' intro dance. old players tagging into the intro logs and giving newbies something to start with makes for much more interesting threading.

they're also good ways for the players to be aware that these resources exist so I'm not sure why you think this cuts off CR.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
i don't think anyone's missing the point, just having a discussion on what did or didn't work for them, what the function of events are in this game, and how the mod team works. yep, event was boring, but nobody here can do anything about that except agree or disagree with you. are you going to actually take this to Mel?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
do any of you guys have this issue? i have a friend who, it seems like, every time i say i don't like something they like, for instance a character or a tv show or movie or anything, they come back a few days later to tell me how something i like is bad?

for instance, i don't like one of their favorite characters in a game. they asked me how i feel about the character and i told them that i don't really like them/find them uninteresting and other problems i have with them. we'll call this character A.

a few days later, they got incredibly aggressive toward me because people were talking about a character i like, character B. they threw a fit and started vague-plurking about how they must be "the only one" not to like this character, the proceeded to use another character, character C (another character i like), to degrade character B, saying they don't know why anyone likes character B when character C exists.

we talked about it and i called them out on it, and apparently we were cool... until today.

today, they started doing the same thing, only with movie A and movie B. I really didn't like movie A and have made it pretty clear that that's my opinion, and even had some pretty harsh criticisms of movie A. today, they went to go see movie B, and came to me and started making the same criticisms i'd made of movie A, except incredibly misplaced.

it just feels like they're using things i like in order to try to personally attack me for not liking the same things they do.

what would you do, or what have you done, in a situation like this?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
i've introed here recently, 'go read the guide' is not actually any more interesting than the standard song and dance.

why not just tag into the intro threads and find a way to work the resources into the conversation?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
depends. if it's a close friend, i'd put up with it/ignore it, but i'd call them out (privately) if it gets out of hand or if i'm starting to lose my patience. if they're a casual acquaintance then i'd quietly distance myself from them and keep our relationship as shallow as possible

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
block them and move on, for fuck's sake. that's not a "friend".
