Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Political topics are still banned. Report threads and they will be deleted.

wanna narrow it down a bit there?

there's like 7-10 different settings and 20 different time periods per setting, with like 20 characters each

much narrowing required

Ray Holt | Brooklyn Nine Nine

(Anonymous) 2016-12-29 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Holt'a trademark is always being deadpan, but occasionally he does break it (see this season's VINDICATION! and BONE?! as examples). What situations would be best for Holt to do that, and how much would be too much?

Additionally, given that this show is for the most part, episodic, when doing a canon review, should I just focus on plot episodes and Holt-centric episodes?

you could probably go either way with your canon review! just focusing on plot episodes and holt-centric episodes would get you by fine, but i'm sure he has a lot of good moments/jokes in other episodes too if you take up the full monty.

as far as breaking the deadpan goes, i'm 90% convinced that it just operates on Rule of Funny (or in sad emotional cases like the s1 finale). like there was that cold open where everyone was guessing why amy was 5 minutes late, and it was a lot funnier for him to shout HOT DAMN when he was right than it would've been for him to keep being deadpan.

he's got investment in things like riddles/puzzles, personal vendettas, etc. he was super excited to go all Velvet Thunder, he practically seethes when Wunch is involved with anything. he's definitely deadpan more often than not but there's a lot of room to wiggle! and if you're thinking of taking him to a game, maybe consider if he'd be less likely to break character (so to speak) with people he's only just gotten acquainted with/doesn't trust just yet? idk he is a fucking enigma.

if all else fails, just try playing around with it until you feel like you've found the right balance.

Seconding the point about people he doesn't know well vs people he knows and trusts.

To look at it outside a Rule of Funny perspective, the reason he's been more open to actual emoting in recent seasons is likely because he's more comfortable with everyone in the Nine Nine. In-canon he's faced extreme discrimination from the passive to actively trying to take him down, so - while he's obviously naturally subdued and taciturn - at least part of his total deadpan attitude especially in the earlier seasons is a learned method of dealing with assumptions and potential undermining or disrespect. That'd probably be the guiding principle in terms of meeting new, probably-weird people in a game.

On the other hand, he is a man who openly cried in a cinema over statistical analysis in Moneyball and got misty-eyed with happiness when he thought his husband had sent him a gift basket of office supplies. Rule of Funny when it comes to how straight-laced he really is applies.

talia forrester | telltale's game of thrones

(Anonymous) 2016-12-31 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
once in awhile i get a hankering to start playing this character. ive really enjoyed what ive played of the telltale games so far, and i watched the first few seasons of the show, but ive never read the books and i fell off hard partway through season 4.

so for anons more familiar with got/asoiaf then i am: how easily could i get by playing talia by reviewing the games and googling relevant information as i go? i know got is a huge and complex setting and series, but i figure talia's a minor enough character in the grand scheme of the story that i might be able to scrape by?

If you're planning on playing in memes, pretty easily. She's young enough and isolated enough to be incredibly ignorant of her world and of most of the things going on in it that aren't directly related to her family's problems, so that will cover a lot of knowledge gaps.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-04 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
ah, good to know that this would be an acceptable game plan for memes. i guess it would make sense that this sort of thing would be less feasible in a game-type setting, tho that's disappointing, since i was looking into some smaller games for her. would you say it'd be totally out of the question without some more familiarity with the mainline canon then, anon?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-04 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
imo, watch until the end of season 4, because that's about the parallel point where the game ends. do that and you'll be fine for knowledge (& using the wiki for any deets you need about the north). lots of got/asoiaf people play only from the show anyway, and the game is based on the show.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Above anon's advice is sound. If you watch through season 4 of the show, you'll be caught up on everything that occurred before Talia's canonpoint, in case you want/need to incorporate any knowledge you think she might have of the events.

That said, I don't think it would necessarily be infeasible to play her in a game with what canon familiarity you have. It just might be tricky for you/frustrating for them if you have canonmates.

Westworld - Hosts

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Do you think the hosts are playable? Would you write them as thinking they're human in their inner dialogue? Or not thinking?

Re: Westworld - Hosts

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Some moreso than others. Definitely Maeve, Dolores, and Bernard. Probably Teddy. Once you get them out of the park setting and away from the programmers, even the less sentient/bugged hosts wouldn't have a way to lose their memories every day, since they won't be confined to their loops and storylines. Memories would build up naturally as CR developed.

Unless they actually know that they're a host, I think they'd have human thoughts. Having one of them figure out what they truly are in a game would be a great arc, tbh.

Good point about the memories. I'm thinking something like the violent delights 'virus' that makes them more aware/conscious of themselves could help them evolve more from the canon loops/settings.

Wendy | Don't Starve Together

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
Not so much a request for help on the voice but I didn't know where else to ask for help on this. Is there enough canon material to app Wendy (or any of the other DST crew sans Wilson and Maxwell) to a game? You could describe her personality based on her character quotes, but the koalefant in the room isn't going anywhere: there's not much in terms of character background/history for the secondary DST characters.

Don't ask us, ask the mods of the game(s) you're interested in apping to. What qualifies as enough material to app from varies wildly from game to game.
