This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. since it's about to be that time again, am I the only one that finds it a little offputting to have old players top leveling to the intro log?

it was one thing when it was just the one guide but last month there was al's guide, frisk's guide, the trading post, and natasha introducing herself. Month before it was al's guide, davesprite introducing himself, and the Joker introducing himself.

i get wanting newbies to get caught up right away but it cuts off CR and isn't very welcoming besides.

how does that cut cr off? it gives the newbies something to ask about.

literally nobody wants to do that 'I'm new oh god what do I do and has anybody seen my castmates' intro dance. old players tagging into the intro logs and giving newbies something to start with makes for much more interesting threading.

they're also good ways for the players to be aware that these resources exist so I'm not sure why you think this cuts off CR.

i've introed here recently, 'go read the guide' is not actually any more interesting than the standard song and dance.

why not just tag into the intro threads and find a way to work the resources into the conversation?

have you seen how many people tag the newbies on the intro thread? I'm not seeing how a few people who are already in the game top leveling cuts off CR. it just adds more opportunities.

didn't this start happening because someone was complaining ic and ooc that veteran characters were jaded and unhelpful towards new characters and left them to fend for themselves too much?

Can't say for sure, but considering that's been the case at every long running game I've ever played in, probably.

Plus, as someone who's introed here recently as well, the infodumps are boring. They're the most boring part of every intro at every game ever made.

I realise this probably doesn't make me at all anonymous, but what the hey!

As one of the people who top-levels consistently in the intro logs with a link to one of the guides, the reason I do it is partially so that the link it out there for new people to see, and partially so they can then handwave that their character has seen it and absorbed a bunch of info without having to do the info-dump question asking.

However, I certainly never intended for it to cut CR opportunities off or be unwelcoming, and am open to other suggestions to how to get the link out there to newbies. Do you have any thoughts as to how to maybe make that possible?

I'm not sure that would be appropriate because it's an IC resource, and not an officially updated mod resource.

When I've introed characters I've found it helpful for exactly this reason. "Go look at the guide" isn't a very exciting thread hook, no, but it allows you to handwave past all the basic setting information. That's especially nice when you're a current player introducing a second character, because I would have found it very boring to have to ask a bunch of questions I already knew the answers to.

My general impression has been that characters that can't / won't read the IC guides still get plenty of replies from characters willing to explain things to them (source: I play a character who has never read the guides), so it's not like the infodump threads are forbidden from happening.
