Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

* telling their kid that the ice cream truck only plays music when they're out of ice cream

now, see, I just ended up realizing how many bland tags were sapping my fun and feeling like a chore and switched things around so now I pretty much only do threads that excite me. Result being I'm still enjoying and excited about rp tags and have more free time too. My speed at answering my tags has gone way up as an added perk.

Welcome to the wonderful world of being an adult and realizing your habits and focus can shift over time.

I'm single and one of those quiet stubborn types that's really mellow on the surface about most things but has some long streaks of unmoveable in certain areas. I can take charge when I need to and be pretty efficient but I prefer to let other people do that because - effort.

I would obviously be the man-hating, hard nosed HBIC. Or I'd just get reduced to the mom/dad character. (I'd be pretty okay with the second one really, it's what I do at cons already)

I would be curious to see who I would be shipped with though.

Other people have said really good stuff, so I'll just add: write thinking of the thread, not the tag. It's okay if not every tag is individually a work of art as long as they add to the thread. Try to keep a sense of continuity (like not forgetting what happened two tags ago).

every time one of you goes on about your rp partner being ~emotionally abusive, i have to roll my eyes

it's a fucking rp partner. stop with the dramatics and just drop them. either fade out or do a hard drop and move the fuck on

I would really like to play out Artoria x Mordred (both Fate/) hate sex. That is all.

all this is good advice, give or take with "long tags". i might even prefer the "multi conversation" style threads if i'm working with a slower tagger, so more things get covered. it is really weird and jarring when you're done and give the thread a reread, however.

another + especially to dorking out about threads on plurk or discord or whatever the kids are using these days. i've been in games where people do it too much (zodion) and it starts to feel insincere, and games where people don't do it enough (trans9 in the end days and sort of cdc) and it feels like no one gives a fuck or that there's some oppressive judgmental cloud hanging over everyone and sucking the fun out of everything.

if you're into it, don't be shy! get excited! it gets me MORE excited! a little bit will go a long way. i want to let you know you're putting a smile on my face and the only way it could possibly get bigger is to know i'm putting one on yours too.

Did you want to play Artoria or Mordred?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-16 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
What the above anon said. I will add that there are plenty of normal, sane fans who disliked the episode and found it to be trite and pointless, but the loudest people and the ones you're most likely hearing are the disappointed Johnlock shippers.

what ifs are 90% of my AUs. canon divergence is amazing and fun and often a really good exercise in getting to understand/develop your character on a deeper level.

the only time I like to do entire setting AUs is if I can keep it to the tune of the original canon. like translating a sci-fi opera into a wild-west AU can be really fun and rewarding when you replace space ships with horse and carriage, or train or ship, and outlaw aliens with outlaws who may have been in an accident/physically deformed, and space politics with... well, politics. if there's an external factor that impacts the characters in the original setting, it should be there in the au.

Anyone else hear a crying baby right now?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-16 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
physically taking a character out of their canon context is different from removing that context from their backstory and characterization entirely though

like you do you, i don't think AUs are terrible or inherently OOC or whatever, but this is a false equivalency

Ultimately you will see no consequences from literally just blocking them on plurk.

that's easy to say, anon, but "rp partner" describes a whole breadth of relationships, from "rando anon i hit up on kinks u wanna play and we're 5 tags in" to "close friend i've played with for 7 years, we've exchanged gifts, visited each others' homes, and been there for each other during hard times." it's easy to cut and fade from someone you hardly know, and yeah, lots of rp partners are people we hardly know, but when you're legit friends with someone it's easy to think or say, "well, that doesn't seem really reasonable, but I care about [PARTNER] a lot, so I'll just accommodate them," or "Well, this isn't such a big deal to me but it really upsets [PARTNER] so I'll work with them on this," and before you know it, you're the frog and the pot is boiling over.

exactly this, hell yeah. i love the sense of writing a story together (not just mashing barbies, but putting thought into a world, a plot, a direction we want the thread to lead to). tags that are so good that i end up sitting around rereading them a couple times, feeling challenged to come up with a great response in return.

hello! gosh all of you have been so sweet, so i really appreciate that you took the time to respond too. both of those tips weren't things i really considered before, so thank you for bringing it up and i'll keep them in mind! most of my questions are about dwrp in general and i'll look into things more on my own, but i was wondering if you'd suggest joining games that already have some/more ocs? most people have been suggesting smaller games which i would jive really well with, but i've noticed a few larger games like eudio or maskormenace having more than a handful ocs and wanted to know if you'd recommend going that route at all. oh no i'm rambling SORRY i think i overestimated myself so instead of flinging myself into a game, i'm going to set up journals and fling myself and my musebox out there one of these days to learn bracket style and plurk and so forth, but in the meantime i'll be checking out overjoyed!!! thank you again and also for the personal recommendation!

i don't play ocs, but i thought maybe it would help to have the perspective of someone who has played off of them with regards to what makes me interested in tagging an oc vs what makes me avoid them.

if your oc is a well-rounded adult who has a mix of believable flaws and positive traits, who is played as a character vs a soapbox for your opinions or a self-insert, and has an actual personality, that's the kind of oc i want to tag.

if your character has a multitude of mental problems, has a rape backstory, shares mental or physical illnesses with you, is a woman whose personality can be summed up as Strong Sassy Lady, is a man whose personality can be summed up as Sassy Slutty Gay, or is basically a canon character with a different name, that's the kind of tripe i wouldn't tag if i was paid to.

ocs i've enjoyed threading with were characters that read like real people. they weren't stereotypes or tropes. their history didn't read suspiciously like their player's life story. they weren't female characters out to show male characters how wrong they were about everything because silly menz. their entire personality didn't hinge on their sexuality. and they didn't come off as the anthropormorphic personification of the latest tumblr-sjw issue.

from what i've seen, people on dw are willing to tag ocs and play with them. there are a number of them in my games and they always get a lot of tags. i think a large part of those players' success with their ocs has to do with how they've made their ocs seem like real people and when you talk to them oocly, the players don't come off as overinvested self-inserters. also, choosing a pb that isn't the latest fad canon heartthrob is a huge plus.

lmao. i've been there. it's not an easy or fun thing to do, but no one should cry abuse over something that can be solved by a block button. there are no fucking stakes in dw rp. you're not risking your job, your pets, your life, your family, of your worldly possessions by cutting an rp partner out.

(frozen comment) Re: da

(Anonymous) 2017-01-16 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
anon, abuse isn't just about a physical inability to escape. when i suffered real life domestic abuse i could have left at any time. but what kept me there wasn't that i was physically trapped. it was that i was mentally trapped. i felt responsible for my abuser, i felt that if i left and cut contact with them they would die, that i would be responsible for killing someone. i felt that anything they did to me paled in comparison to what i would do to them if i left, so i let them do whatever they wanted, for years and years and years.

emotional abuse is far more insidious than you appear to think. the door can be wide open, and it can be as simple as a block button, but when someone's god you brainwashed that block button may as well be the trigger of a gun, pointed at the other person's head.

Re: ANONS, WHAT MAKES A GOOD RP WRITER?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-16 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
- clear character voice, which doesn't necessarily translate to 100% ic. if i know the canon, then ideally the character would be at least somewhat recognizable, but often times i don't know or really care, as long as the characterization is consistent, distinctive, and interesting.

- a good balance between description, introspection, action, and hooks. i want to know what their character is thinking and doing and why, i want them to be moving around in a world that's not just blank white space, and i want something to react to (and i'll put in all of those things in turn in my tags.) i don't want purple prose-y description just for the sake of description

- consistentcy. i'm not a fast tagger by any stretch of the imagination, so i'd be happy with a tag a day or every few days.

- MOVES THE THREAD ALONG. this is honestly my number one thing. i don't care how great and IC a writer you are, how often you tag, whether your prose could make angels weep, if you aren't making the thread progress and ideally tossing in some twists and turns of your own.
