i'm wandering in from the pb/oc side of insanejournal but i've always wanted to try things out here! is there a small game that would be friendly to ocs with live action pbs? or any pointers on where or how i could dip my toes in would be very welcomed c:

As a person who plays OCs sometimes, I really recommend starting out over here with a fandom character and preferably someone people might've heard of. You don't need to go whole hog and pick from only the latest in bandwagon canons, but play from something that people can glance at and have a rough idea of what they are in about two seconds even if they haven't read/saw/played the canon.

Definitely make it someone you like and can get invested in longterm and be fairly ic with, of course.

It doesn't matter how good an OC is. Dreamwidth was left, wrongly or rightly, with this obnoxious sparkleteen secret-daughter-of-voldemort image in the mid-00's and no amount of people playing okay oc's has lifted it. The painful truth is that nobody cares about your OC unless you give them a reason to, and the primary reason someone might become interested in your OC is because they already know they like playing with you and think you're fun.

I wouldn't play an OC as a first character in a game. Find your feet with a fandom character, then throw in an OC as a second if you like the place and lean on the friendships you've already made to help you find some play for them.

thank you this is helpful insight! i don't know how successful i'd be trying out a fandom character because i've never done it before, but it's definitely worth considering as an option and this sounds like a good way of letting people warm up to me

anon above me sounds extremely jaded. i've seen some bad OCs, sure, but i've seen plenty of good ones around too and they always seem to get a fair amount of play imo as long as they're done well and their tags are giving others interesting stuff to respond to. there will probably be people here and there who ignore OCs just because they're OCs, but there are people who refuse to play with LA or anime characters or whatever so it's not really worth worrying about. if you're having trouble getting anywhere with an OC, resist the urge to get a victim complex about it (as i feel most people who complain about DW bring so anti-OC are) and instead consider that the issue might be more about a lack of hooks in your tags or cliched/bland characterization.

basically, just poke around for a game that seems to have a friendly atmosphere that accepts OCs and go for it. focus on finding a setting that interests you, and maybe aim for a smaller game if you're really worried about getting play with an OC - big games might offer more possibilities for CR, but it's also easier to get overlooked imo, while small games tend to foster CR easier since everyone knows they don't have as many options and can't be super picky about who they're tagging.

thank you for this! you raise a good point about people having certain preferences wrt la/anime too. this sounds like a good mindset to approach things with though. i'm not eager to ship my ocs with fandom characters or anything, i just want to try something new and write tbh so i'll poke around more to learn nuances so i don't turn people off from me. and i was looking at smaller games so thank you for this tip!

just look around at the games on offer, find one or two that seem interesting to you and have a few OCs already on the roster, and app in. be prepared to tag out a lot your first few months, and to generally have to put in a decent amount of work to establish CR, because you won't have any name recognition to draw people in. once you get some solid CR, there will be more back and forth.

thank you!! that's a really good point to keep in mind and i might have to lurk a while longer until i have more time and energy to devote to reaching out consistently

if your oc has a pb who is pretty, white and male, you'll probably fare better than some canon characters.

it's like this on ij and it's crazy the difference in attention white male pbs get vs moc but i usually pb asian dudes :c

hey anon! as someone who plays more ocs than canon characters these days, most of the advice above is pretty good

one thing i can add is to give test drive memes a shot! you can check out the tdm thread on this post to see ones that are open at the moment. since you're playing an oc, the best bet is to tag out rather than doing your own top-level, but it'll help you get a good feel for the game.

someone mentioned how important it is to put in the effort with plotting so i'd also say get a plurk if you don't have one already, cr memes & plot with me memes go around on plurk occasionally and are super useful for oc players. plus building ooc friendships means people are more likely to tag you.

i'm currently in [community profile] overjoyed_ooc right now and everyone has been super welcoming and willing to plot with my oc. it's sci-fi with memloss/au aspects and we have about 40 characters. i can't really speak for any other games since i'm not in them, but if you have any general questions i'd be happy to answer them!

hello! gosh all of you have been so sweet, so i really appreciate that you took the time to respond too. both of those tips weren't things i really considered before, so thank you for bringing it up and i'll keep them in mind! most of my questions are about dwrp in general and i'll look into things more on my own, but i was wondering if you'd suggest joining games that already have some/more ocs? most people have been suggesting smaller games which i would jive really well with, but i've noticed a few larger games like eudio or maskormenace having more than a handful ocs and wanted to know if you'd recommend going that route at all. oh no i'm rambling SORRY i think i overestimated myself so instead of flinging myself into a game, i'm going to set up journals and fling myself and my musebox out there one of these days to learn bracket style and plurk and so forth, but in the meantime i'll be checking out overjoyed!!! thank you again and also for the personal recommendation!

im just gonna log in with my sock account so i dont have to bother with ayrt etc

i think despite people getting occasionally bitter & nasty on anoncomms overall we're pretty keen to have new blood! and don't worry about rambling, i've been in the same spot once so answering questions is fine.

whether you join a game with or without OCs depends on how much risk you want to take. as you said, bigger games like MoM and eudio have OCs so you know they're going to be more open to them, but I've also joined games with zero OCs and done fine! personally i'd advise going for a game that'll suit your style more; there's no point joining a big game bc there's other OCs if you won't be able to keep up (I used to be in MoM, actually, and dropped for that reason). honestly as long as your OC & writing is decent and you're willing to put the effort in to tag out/plot with people, you should do fine anywhere!

if you wanna hit me up via PM for threading or just to chat feel free to! honestly i'm always looking out for more OC players because I love seeing what other people come up with C:

aaa thank you, you're too kind! hello sockaccount. that's very true though and i should keep in mind that games are going to be what i make of them, but huzzah i'm going to pm you soon!!

i don't play ocs, but i thought maybe it would help to have the perspective of someone who has played off of them with regards to what makes me interested in tagging an oc vs what makes me avoid them.

if your oc is a well-rounded adult who has a mix of believable flaws and positive traits, who is played as a character vs a soapbox for your opinions or a self-insert, and has an actual personality, that's the kind of oc i want to tag.

if your character has a multitude of mental problems, has a rape backstory, shares mental or physical illnesses with you, is a woman whose personality can be summed up as Strong Sassy Lady, is a man whose personality can be summed up as Sassy Slutty Gay, or is basically a canon character with a different name, that's the kind of tripe i wouldn't tag if i was paid to.

ocs i've enjoyed threading with were characters that read like real people. they weren't stereotypes or tropes. their history didn't read suspiciously like their player's life story. they weren't female characters out to show male characters how wrong they were about everything because silly menz. their entire personality didn't hinge on their sexuality. and they didn't come off as the anthropormorphic personification of the latest tumblr-sjw issue.

from what i've seen, people on dw are willing to tag ocs and play with them. there are a number of them in my games and they always get a lot of tags. i think a large part of those players' success with their ocs has to do with how they've made their ocs seem like real people and when you talk to them oocly, the players don't come off as overinvested self-inserters. also, choosing a pb that isn't the latest fad canon heartthrob is a huge plus.

aaa thank you so much for taking the time to reply and go through this! it really does help to see things from the other perspective and i don't think i'm an offender of these but don't worry i won't ramble about that. it's pretty reassuring to hear that people are willing to tag ocs and play with them!! i hope i run into people like you when i start!
