Hanamaru anime's out!

It's nice to have something canon, even if it'll inevitably destroy something of the year and a half's worth of game headcanon for some.

I can't wait to see shitty headcanons thrown in the trash.

people are already complaining about Yamatonokami and Kashuu's dynamic because it seems to be a reverse of what j-fandom/doujinshi assumed and went with.

there's still time for us to learn more shades of their relationship, but yeah, the idea that Kashuu is openly resentful and hostile towards Yamatonokami has been thoroughly jossed, probably for the best.

I'm also glad for the difference, but I can see why people find it jarring. Even though him being openly hostile to Yamato is a stupid headcanon he was still really calm and mellow compared to how the game dialogue made him seem. Maybe I'm misremembering but I recall him being dramatic, vain, and a bit whiny and hotheaded. They remembered the vanity, but his overall even-tempered behavior in the anime wasn't what I was expecting.

As much as I like j-fandom's interpretation, it's kind of nice to see such a sweet take on their dynamic tbh.

That said, Hanamaru won't be the most official anime adaptation. UFOtable's is the one that's going to be overseen directly by DMM (Hanamaru wasn't), so there's still the chance of Hanamaru canon being jossed. I think most people going into a fandom like this would be, or should have been, ready to be jossed though.

That would require them to accept their headcanon only existing in an alternate scenario from the one they're given. For some folks that really isn't enough.

while the anime is only one presented scenario, to assume every citadel is different, or that the character relationships and personalities would be inherently different as a result, is stupid

I want to like the anime but the ugly shota swords pissed me off enough when I played the game. Listening to Imanotsurugi speak is almost painful.

Why is the main cast made up of the boring boys?

More swords will be added each episode, so hopefully the focus will shift away from the boring ones.

With luck Hasebe loses his secretary job and someone else gets to try it. I get straight man comic relief but his Saniwa obsession will get grating really fast. Didn't like it in the actual game, I don't care for it here.

well I mean it also makes sense that there's a fair number of those in the first episode, considering they're among the first ones you get in the game, right? like, UNREASONABLE AMOUNTS OF THEM. i'm personally allergic to gokotai, but i'm assuming stuff will be balanced out as the anime progresses and new swords are added.

i'm guessing because there's two anime so they'll feature a slightly different group for the ufotable one.

expect the vast majority of swords to at least have cameos in hanmaru, but yeah, the ufotable anime has already made it clear that mikazuki is going to be the focus character in that one.

honestly the thing I appreciate the most is having some visualization of the gameplay aspects, like how the citadel and the time travel and battles all actually work in a more fleshed out way.

it's a godsend for having to explain to other characters how shit works in swordboy world.

"oh, hey, it's the thing!" "oh, so that's how it works"

I'm lucky enough that one of my swords muse doesn't care enough to explain. But it's great to have some answer for my more serious swords.

Now I just need the anime to show how troops work. If they do show them.

and now, we have the ritual!

it looks like the swords are actually shikigami, not tsukumogami like we all thought, which since they're all servants of the saniwa ANYWAYS, that makes sense.

Characters actually refer to each other as tsukumogami officially, but it was interesting to see the ritual! I was expecting the forge mechanic to be used so I'm really curious if that will come into play later.

... Hilariously, the summoning shiki was designed purely because Hanamaru Saniwa is a hikikomori.

My tanumida heart skipped a beat this episode. Like I don't care about whatever gender discourse will happen because of this episode, doudanuki was cute.

Which of the swords do you think will have a vastly different portrayal in hanamaru than what fandom interprets them to be like?

He's already in the anime, but Tsurumaru surprised me. I mean it could completely be a front but I like happy, fascinated-by-new-things Tsurumaru.
